a funky party record, December 21, 2008

lyrically this isn't impressive at all, but the production is almost all live instrumentation and sticks mainly with the funk aesthetic. this is the type of music that i like to party to. it's got catchy hooks, funky beats, and is just fun! if you like that type of thing this'll be right up your alley.

It's very rare that music comes along that is truly perfect. This is one of those rare glimpses at genius that, if you're a musician of any sort, makes you want to be better. The back and fourth between Phife and Q-Tip is better on this any ATCQ album, and the production is second to none. If for some reason you don't already have this, and maybe are worried that it's going to sound dated you are sorely mistaken. This could've come out within the past few years (aside from some of the references) and it would've been huge! If you don't own this, buy it immediately!

a mixed bag, December 20, 2008

A few of the tracks on here (That 'Ol Boom Bap Remix, School) are great! There are also some others that aren't quite as memorable but still good. The biggest problem with this album is the prevalence of Celph Titled, the guy just sounds like a dumb person that knows words that rhyme. The other problem that this has, which is a plague with a lot of hip hop, is that it's got a ton of garbage hooks! Those things aside, Apathy is a dope MC and is a solid listen.

some KILLER songs, but a pretty bad album, November 10, 2008

it's really unfortunate that this isn't better than it is. lif & ak are both incredibly lyricists, but i really only like a few of the tracks on here. however, those tracks that i DO like are damn near flawless! hard ass beats with dope lyrics. you're really got to see these guys live if you want to get the full effect. hopefully they get around to putting out something new, but lif moved down to philly and ak has been doing really well solo, so who knows when that'll be.

solid, but not his best, November 10, 2008

being from providence, ri i've had the privilege of hearing ak for years now. mixtapes, at battles, tons of shows, etc. i always tend to grab his shit cause he's real good at what he does. however, this record suffers from what i think is the biggest problem with the boston hip hop scene, and that's that they have zero clue how to write good hooks. they wind up sounding forced and corny. aside from that and a couple of songs this is a fair representation of akro. balance is still better than this, but this is definitely way better than black dialogue. all in all this has some solid production and some dope battle rhymes.

much better than i had expected!, November 10, 2008

i might be the only person alive that thinks that phife dawg is more enjoyable to listen to than q-tip. add to this the fact that i don't care for much tribe post midnight marauders and you have a perfect recipe for me to not like this album. however, this is actually pretty good! it's not jaw dropping or anything, but with the exception of only a few weaker hooks this is definitely worth picking up. q-tip basically just spits the way he always has, which is a huge plus. listening to this it becomes painfully obvious how much hip hop still owes to this man. this is a very pop friendly album, with the exception of a few tracks, everything on this clocks in at a little over three minutes. the longest track going to "move" which is 5:49.

bottom line, this isn't going to go down as a classic, but it is definitely worth owning!
