|''Summer of 2006, the beginning of the end of everything I thought I knew. Youth was stolen from my city that summer, and I'm left alone to tell the story.''|
Twenty-two year old Vince Staples spits elaborate ideas and rugged experiences through very blunt, straightforward bars. He spent most of his life going back and forth between North Side Long Beach and his grandparents' house in Compton. Devoted to expressing what was once his difficult reality, he manages to assert himself as one of the most intelligently aware emcees from his background without portraying a cheesy ''backpack rap'' persona. Though surrounded by drugs and alcohol since an early age, he claims he never ingested any type of mind altering substance in order to stay sharp when dealing with a chance at losing his life at any given moment. Vince isn't here for fame or to glorify his violent past, but rather to be a voice for his community and those living through similar circumstances.
Summertime '06 was overseen and mostly produced by Def Jam executive Dion ''No I.D.'' Wilson, once mentor to Kanye West, with other tracks produced by Clams Casino, Dj Dahi, Kidd and Christian Rich.
Features from Daley, Jhene Aiko, fellow members of the Cutthroat Boyz trio Joey Fatts and Aston Matthews, Kilo Kish, Snoh Aalegra, Haneef Talib and Future.
