While hip hop star Mos Def was somewhat open about his last album Tru Magic being an obligation to release him from his contract with Geffen, there was almost no promotion behind it and reviews were mixed, you almost got the feeling that he didn't intend for it to be anything special, which kind of left fans with a bad taste in their mouths. But in the music business and not just hip hop, we hear about things like that happening, and so on a certain level I do side with Mos Def and to be honest there were still a few decent cuts on that album. But how do you bounce back from that? Well, for starters, you find a new label that is less concerned with sales and more interested in artistry, and second...tap the underground from which you came from for some much needed help in production (to distance yourself from the Neptunes and Kanye) and recruit and trust in the likes of Madlib, Oh No and Georgia Ann Muldrow! Featuring guest appearances by Talib Kweli, Slick Rick and Ms. Muldrow herself along with production from longtime collaborator DJ Preservation and a beat by the late J-Dilla.
