Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement DLX 2xCD

Stones Throw has had its share of hits over the years, and measuring that success in the underground and abroad may not always balance out, but they just might have a real crossover on their hands with Mayer Hawthorne! Getting praise already from big time celebs like Justin Timberlake and John Mayer, and even Ghostface Killah jumping on board and snatching him up for a tour, Hawthorne is the new "It" kid in many music circles! His almost fetishistic love for 50's and 60's motown is matched only by his authentic ability to re-create it! So convincing, so freakishly accurate it's almost scary. Throwback is "in" right now, and I mean to reference Sharon Jones and the Daptones, Budos Band, El Michel's Affair, and plenty of others who bring a real vibrant and traditional funk and soul sound that you'd be able to fool an expert with. A Strange Arrangement brings it back to the sad solo vocalist, to the unique love ballads of doo wop in its hey day! I say this all the time...but hearing is believing...seriously! Everything is coming back full circle, where funk and soul were some of the groundwork that made hip hop music possible, we've come back to love and appreciate just why that is with this revivalist revolution.Features a limited alligator print cover and comes enclosed with a 4-inch record with bonus tracks.

Carlos Nino - Suite For Ma Dukes LP

Production powerhouse Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson have worked together on a variety of projects for several years now. Suite For Ma Dukes grew out of when Nino hired Atwood-Ferguson's string quartet, Supernova, to perform on Dwight Trible & The Life Force Trio's "Love is the Answer" (Ninja Tune) in 2004. On that same Dwight Tribble album project, Nino met and then licensed a track from one of his heroes, James "Jay Dee/J Dilla" Yancey. After Dilla's untimely death only two years later, Nino and Atwood-Ferguson chose to pay tribute to Dilla by continuing the musical conversation that he had started, but in the contemporary chamber music style that Atwood-Ferguson had been developing. Suite for Ma Dukes is the first official release of this music and is Hip Hop as you have never heard. All four tracks cover Dilla's magic, giving treatment to Jay Dee classics from Common, A Tribe Called Quest, and Slum Village. In each, the harmonic and melodic beauty of Dilla's music is liberated. Earlier this year, the project received the official blessing from Ma Dukes herself and part of the proceeds from the record will go to Dilla's heirs.

Breakestra - Dusk Till Dawn LP

Breakestra return with their long-awaited sophomore set exploring all colors of the funk spectrum on this follow up to their critically acclaimed 2005 Ubiquity album Hit The Floor. Built around the vision of Music Man Miles and Mixmaster Wolf (as well as producing, Miles plays drums, bass, guitars, keys and percussion on the record), the trademark Breakestra touches remain intact as Wolf fronts tough breakbeat jams while Miles himself brings his soulful vocals Dusk Till Dawn alongside the addition of an amazing new female vocalist Afrodyete. The album itself is also a tribute to Tackett's late DJ partner at Rootdown, DJ Dusk, whose life was tragically taken in a road accident in 2007. Dusk himself appears alongside Jurassic 5's Chali 2NA on the funky "Posed To Be."

Prolyphic & Reanimator - The Ugly Truth CD

Strange Famous Records branches out to become a full-fledged music label that will now sign and release new artists and groups starting with Prolyphic and Reanimator's The Ugly Truth. Prolyphic hails from
label owner Sage Francis' hometown of Providence, Rhode Island with his longtime collaborator and producer Reanimator from Chicago. This handpicked duo has turned out to be just the right combination as
Prolyphic delivers powerful rhymes over Reanimator's heavily layered beats. If you're a fan of Galapogos4 stuff, Glue or Anticon's earlier releases, this one won't disappoint!

Why? - Eskimo Snow LP

Brand new from Why? as Yoni Wolf has adopted his stage name to include his entire band which also includes his brother Josiah on drums. For quite a few years now Why?'s work on Anticon can no longer be classified as hip hop, folk hop or even avant garde hop as it used to get labeled. These days they are more indie rock than anything, but there is still something about their sound that makes it different from everything else. On an interesting note...many of these tracks were recorded during their 2007 sessions in the making of Alopecia. Longtime fans won't want to miss out.

Odd Nosdam - T.I.M.E. Soundtrack LP

Daaammmn! Anticon veteran producer and beatsmith Odd Nosdam serves up some raw beats on this soundtrack to the Element Skateboarding video, This Is My Element. Really it's the first of its kind as far as tapping a producer to compose original music for the segments included throughout the film. Again the beats here are raw and hard as hell, simple and quick to the point, more in touch with what Odd Nosdam used to crank out back in the earlier days of Plan 9, Meat Your Hypnotist, and No More Wig For Ohio. Anticon naysayers might actually dig this, and longtime fans like myself already know what's up! HEAT!

Common Market - Tobacco Road CD

RA Scion and DJ Sabzi (of Blue Scholars) follow up their Black Patch EP and their previous self titled release with Tobacco Road! The Seattle, Washington duo carries on the politically charged themes and content of Sabzi's group Blue Scholars hail from the same region. The two had run into a set back while recording and the album was delayed for over year. RA Scion's lyrics reflect upon his musical influences in relation to his worldly travels, as well as spiritual, his conscious approach to hip hop caught the ear of KRS-One who later took the two on tour with him in 2005. Tobacco road is yet another unique offering from the Pacific Northwest, marking the region as unclassifiable but easily recognizable as true-blue hip hop all the way. Again, it is produced entirely by Sabzi, very jazzy and organic but also different from his work Geologic, who also makes a special guest appearance on the album!

El-P - Fantastic Damage CD

Just restocked and ready to go! Still haven't taken your copy of I'll Sleep When You're Dead out of heavy rotation? Niether have we! Maybe you're a new fan or maybe you just never knew how dope this release was, but back in 2002 it was the same story. EL-P released his first solo album three years after the official arrival of Def Jux to a barrage of positive reviews and critical acclaim. Angry as hell and letting his lyrics run wildly over his signature gritty, futuristic production. Not big on guest appearances, he pretty much stuck with members from the Jukie roster with cuts and some very eerie scratches by DJ Abilities. Overall, 5 years ago when this dropped, the underground wasn't ready, and it hit with a very loud bang.

Deep Rooted - D.E.E.P. R.O.O.T.E.D. CD

Deep Rooted's long awaited and highly anticipated third full-length album is here! Following up the Second Coming with a more upbeat approach, as some would say that the previous album was so smooth it was almost too smooth. But the group has perfected a balancing act that most can't pull off, providing equal presence for everyone involved from the production/DJing of Artistic and to the lyrics of Johaz and Mr. Brady (also on production of course) and the soulful vocals of Just Brea and the live presence and support of the Urban Dynamic dancers. This is truly, the right kind of image San Diego hip hop needs: it's positive, appealing and honest music-making that will help people take the diverse scene out here a lot more seriously. Featuring guest production by DJ Rhettmatic, Moka Only, Exile and Kas One, with appearances by Sha Dula, Blu, and Killah Priest.

Featuring more guests than you can count including RA The Rugged Man, Apathy, Killah Priest, Main Flow, Reef the Lost Cauze, Supastition, EDO G, Boom Bap Project and much more!

Exile - Radio 2xLP

Los Angeles based producer Exile is not the first in his family to create music. His father, Albert Trent Manfredi and grandfather Alberico Manfredi were both musicians. His father released some 45's in the 1960's that are now highly sought after. His grandfather not only taught music but also played in a diverse mix of bands ranging from Mariachi to traditional Italian music. At an early age Exile was introduced to a wide variety of music. Living in his grandfather's garage, he learned to play the accordion, and all this exposure early on in his life helped grow in him a desire to create music one day and in the genre he fell in love with..hip hop. After meeting Aloe Blacc while in their teens, and with a one-button sampler and a four track they formed Emanon and started making their own albums. He later went on to produce for Slum Village, MED and Ghostface Killah on his solo album Dirty Science. Shortly after he collaborated with Blu and created the now classic Below the Heavens. Radio is his first fully instrumental album, and as Exile believes there are two sides to the business of hip hop, he aims to balance out his instrumentals with love conquering over evil. Sounds like a hard concept to convey on a strictly instrumental album, but Radio is one that will have you itching for more and hoping just maybe that the rumors surrounding a second project with Blu might actually come true.

Cage - Hell's Winter CD

Calling all Def-jukies! Cage makes his Definitive Jux debut after years of guest spots on various releases from the label, including EL-P's Fantastic Damage. This right here is one of the best albums of 2005! And we don't just throw that on any old album that comes our way. Once considered horror-core, people compared his shock rap to the early stylings of Kool Keith. But with this release Cage gets all personal on us and doesn't hold back. Not afraid to share his story growing up, Hell's Winter paints a dark canvas over his youth and continues on as he lets us in on how he's evolved into the man he is today. What we get is Cage the artist, the poet, an incredibly talented and gifted mc on an almost flawless album track for track. From the powerful anti-war Bush basher, "Grand 'Ol Party Crash", produced by DJ Shadow, to heavy head nodders like EL-P's production on "Lord Have Mercy", this album should satisfy everyone and anyone with an appetite for raw, real, hip hop.

Previously out of print this was supposed to be the single that launched The Boulevard Connection's Denmark hip hop record label back in 2000 but slipped through the cracks in a very crowded year for hip hop and for some reason went overlooked, even though it featured The Last Emperor and Iriscience and DJ Babu over one seriously dope beat.

Heavyweight beat generation cosmic hip hop n'jazz featuring Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Muhsinah, Dorian Concept and many more. Somewhere between the past and the distant future, sparked by dusty old jazz records and beat generation hip hop, at the audio cross-roads of Detroit and Vienna, are the sound stories that have been steeping in the head of 23 year old beat navigator Paul Movahedi, also known as The Clonious. His outerworldly, astral jazz riffs burst out between booming beats and shoe-gazer future-funk to give the pulse of his electronic sounds a unique organic edge.
Breakestra - Dusk Till Dawn CD

Very different but a step in the right direction, the album also features guest appearances by DJ Drez, 2Mex, Pigeon John, with returning producer Jericho J. on almost the entire album and guest scratching by LA Jae of the Shapeshifters and DJ Drez on select tracks.

Musab - Slick's Box CD

Newly signed to the Hiero Imperium, Musab re-emerges after a long absence since his Rhymesayer's debut, under the alias Beyond from the underground classic "Comparison". The street-smart emcee's claim to fame came from his appearances on Ant's Headshots mixtapes and Atmosphere's Overcast, and would later join Slug, Mr. Gene Poole and I Self Divine for 1998's DynoSPECTRUM album, produced entirely by
Ant. After his second solo "Respect For Life" was met with only moderate underground success, he eventually parted ways with Rhymesayers over mild creative differences concerning the direction
of his next project. His Minnesota Slicks moniker is what he looks at more as a character piece about the tortured soul of a pimp as seen through the eyes of the South-side Minneapolis raised emcee. It can
be hard to pull off a free form storytelling album such as this, especially when the listeners mistakenly take it literally, but Musab draws from his own experiences and personal life, and with hip hop he is able to artistically convey this concept in a truthy fashion.

The anticipation for Common's latest album is continuing to grow in at an alarming rate! The lead single, "The Corner" featuring the legendary Last Poets is hard as hell! Fueled by the production of Kanye West and Jay Dilla, This is going to be a fresh album! Even with the internet leak, which, despite bad quality and skips, sounds ILL, Common says that the leak is not the WHOLE album... Get ready people, Common is back!

Mestizo - Pieces to Grow CDR

The second of two exclusive tour only projects dropped off by Mestizo himself after a recent visit to San Diego. This one features a lot more appearances by Galapagos label mates and is full of unreleased songs, instrumentals and experimental material not heard on any previous release. These sold out fast in 2006, but Mestizo was nice enough to drop a few more on us in 2009. Just a few - they'll go fast!

Mestizo - Dream State (JP import) CD

The Japanese version of Mestizo's 2007 album - a few tracks are not on the US release, but most are the same, just in a different order. Featuring apperances by Qwel, Joe Dub, 2Mex, Isaiah & Murs! Dream State is about the Golden "State" of California through the eyes of Mestizo. Upholding the West Coast branch of Galapagos4, Stizo has proven himself with two solid albums (not to mention a slew of successful tour cds) with the label and a following that grows even stronger every day. Produced by Julian Code, a soon to be sought after producing duo after this one gains some steam, made up of Sean Julian and DJ Morse Code. Mestizo always captures the listeners attention with a commanding presence on the mic and introspective well thought out lyrics with no filler. If you're not familiar with the G4 camp or their many talented artists, its time to pay attention.

Brother Ali - Us CD

Staying true to their soul and blues influence that the combination of Brother Ali and Ant have become known for, Us takes on a more lush and dense sonic quality with the duo's incorporation of live instrumentation. With guest appearances by Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition, Brother Ali and Ant have once again crafted a beautifully intelligent and entertaining album for all. So while his other material has been very personal and political, Ali seems to be at ease with this one and making it a little more light on subject matter and just putting out a quality hip hop album.

Dirty Digital (Qwazaar) - Dirty Digital CDR

What I believe was originally meant to be an experiment in electronica/house and hip hop from Galapagos4 producer Silence and Typical Cats emcee Qwazaar, has appeared to have changed course and avoided being shelved and has turned into a straight up collection of new and unreleased material from the Chicago pair's side venture as Dirty Digital. Now more of a tour-style release, it's still a nice offering and hopefully just a taste of what these two have brewing. Comes with the original CD single "Sodapopinkski" and a poster.

Brand new music from OCT, the fearsome foursome that toured and opened all over California before finally completing their own self titled full length in 2007. Daily Dose is another dose of their ever so Cali-familiar party lifestyles and laid back ways as well as proof of their good connections made from touring with some of the undergrounds most seasoned vets, with a guest appearance from Swollen Members' Madchild for example. For fans of Instant Messangers.

Johnson&Jonson (Blu) - Johnson&Jonson CD

We can't seem to keep it on the shelves! The now out of print Below The Heavens was heralded as a contemporary classic only a year after its release, and paired upcoming emcee Blu with widely respected producer Exile for a soulful, honest and introspective album. As fans eagerly anticipated some kind of follow up, early on this year we were met with the somewhat misunderstood C.R.A.C Knuckles, a collaboration Blu started with Detroit producer Ta'Raach, an album he'd already started long before his heavily delayed debut became a hit. Johnson&Jonson re-visits Blu's producer specific approach, teaming up this time with Mainframe, who provides a lush new pallet of beats for the emcee to experiment with. I'd say this actually combines my favorite things about Below The Heavens with that of C.R.A.C. Knuckles, the mellow vibes with heavier drums of Heavens and some of the more upbeat playfulness of Knuckles. One thing's for sure...this one is hot right now and will probably be talked about for the remainder of the year as proof of Blu's ever increasing popularity.

Blame One - Days Chasing Days CD

"Grown Man Rap" was the lead track off of Blame One's 2004 EP of the same name (released by Access Hip Hop). The long-time San Diego North County resident gives us credit for being the first to push his music on a wider scale through the EP release, plus by carrying his early CDs like Chemically Imbalanced and A Complex Burden. But I have to say all the credit is his -- it's the talent, skill, and music he creates that has made believers out of just about everyone who hears him, and the term "Grown Man Rap" applies to everything he has put out as long as we've known him. Through pure talent and skill the emcee conveys honesty and positivity without coming across forced or cliched. To put it bluntly...this is bullshit-free hip hop. Days Chasing Days follows up 2006's Priest, Thief + Wizard with pride and ease; once again, with help from frequent collaborators like Exile and Kankick on the beats, Blame has made something truly special. Also featuring production by Black Milk and Oh No, plus with guest appearances by Aloe Blacc, Johaz, Sean Price, Blu and more! Blame says the ovrerall concept of the album "is about us all forming routines and patterns in our life and trying to go outside of that to accomplish something near to our own hearts."
