Kurious - Constipated Monkey CD

The long awaited re-issue of Kurious George's classic debut! No hip hop fan's collection is complete without A Constipated Monkey. Along with the Beatnuts, Jorge Alvarez was one of the first upcoming latin emcee's in the early 90's. This happens to be yet another slept on album from the Golden Era, 1994 to be exact, a year in which he should have had his due, after appearing on a much heard demo from KMD's Black Bastards on "Smokin' That Shit" and the widely successful "Nowhere to Run" on Gravediggaz 6ft Deep! Why then, did an album that featured production handled almost entirely by the Beatnuts with appearances from Hiero's Casual, and then known Mr. Grimm aka MF Grimm, go so unnoticed? Perhaps it was the gimmicky sound of the title, maybe it was his "curiously" comical punchlines, but the album is actually quite good, he's a seasoned lyricist and outshines almost anybody on any guest spot he's been featured on. Do yourself a favor and re- experience the first AND ONLY album Kurious would ever be given the chance to release.

Atmosphere - When Life Gives... DELUXE CD+DVD

It's finally here! The 6th official full length studio album from Atmosphere! Over the years Slug and Ant's sound has attracted fans by the hundreds of thousands and as they quickly came to rise as one of the most well known indie hip hop groups this decade. Evolving their sound and taking their act on the road has aged and matured the artists and helped mold their style. Slug's brilliant wordplay and Ant's unique production have taken on many different forms and continue to attract new listeners with heartfelt stories,
retrospective ballads, and that straight up chill shit. Some of us can say we remember them way back when, others are closet listeners, and the rest are hypnotized by their charismatic aura. I can definitely imagine how much fun they are having now, even if it goes as far as making an album all the newbies might not understand, as this one has darker content, experimental grooves and a lack of catchy refrains. This isn't pop people, this isn't emo-rap...this is the kind of platform that hip hop needs to slap the MTV generation upside the head, and if that takes two blue collar white guys from Minneapolis to do it then by all means...Hats off even goes out to the fans, whom I truly believe this album was intended for. So open
your ears, there's probably a song about you on there. This limited deluxe edition (only 25,000 made) is packaged as a 40-page gold embossed hard cover book featuring an illustrated children's story written by Slug, with a bonus DVD of an entire live performance.

9th Prince (Killarmy) - Prince of New York CD

Though currently incarcerated, the younger brother to founding Wu-Tang member The RZA, 9th Prince of Killarmy (whose alias comes from the 1981 Kung-Fu flick Shaolin Prince) has made a name for himself with fans and followers of his Wu-affiliation and the heavily regarded classic release from his group, 1997's Silent Weapons For Quiet Wars. Prince of New York is 9th Prince's follow up to his 2003 solo Granddaddy Flow, and features a re-union with Killarmy members Baretta 9 and Islord. And although it is considered a sophomore solo album on his independently owned label Armyourself Ent., it actually is a collection of unreleased material uncovered over the last few years and unknown in origin but a solid release no doubt, with gritty lyrics and rugged beats longtime fans will not want to miss out!

Blue Sky Black Death - Late Night Cinema 2xLP

The renowned production duo composed of Kingston and Young God have answered fan prayers with their first fully instrumental release since arriving on the scene with the critically acclaimed A Heap Of Broken Images on Mush Records back in 2006! Said release, if you remember, was a double feature, with the first disc showcasing their Endtroducing-like ear for beautiful and thought provoking instrumentals and the second laying down artist appropriate beats for a host of MCs. Next they teamed up with the Wu's only West Coast affiliate, Holocaust, followed by their collaboration with Sunz of Man's Hell Razah on "Razah's Ladder." Now, after a long wait and by popular demand, Late Night Cinema proves that once again these guys can do no wrong! Gorgeous (yes I said it...gorgeous!) instrumental hip hop bliss. Just the type of heavy and cinematic tone listeners have been waiting for. Dark and eerie with lots of haunting voice samples in the background, movie-like violins, bass shattering percussion, unpredictable drum patterns and mid-song beat changes make this one an instant classic!

Thes One continues to further PUTS' credibility by releasing this all instrumental album inspired and sampled from 70's radio spots and jingles. With his penchant for filtered basslines, chopped samples and impeccable drum programming, Thes only cements his title as a producer. If only he rapped on them! As an added bonus, a second disc is included with music from Herb Pilhofer, the gentleman who concocted these delightful musical oddities.

Eligh - Poltergeist CD

The crew had been very busy after Almost Famous was released, people started to wonder where the solo albums were. There were so many side projects happening, so much touring going on, and demand was high...but finally after what seemed like an eternity since Gas Dream was released, Eligh was ready and completed this long awaited follow up. He'd honed his producing skills with two Gandalf albums and was making beats for just about everyone else in the crew in the time that had passed. He put a lot of thought, heart and soul into the lyrics to create the Poltergeist, which had become an entity that surfaced in his absence.

The first studio album and official follow up in the five years that have passed since Later That Day. Long known for his innovative collaborations and soulful vocals, Lyrics Born is always raising the bar with new concepts and song crafting uncommon in today's hip hop. Incorporating elements of funk, pop and R&B, Everywhere At Once indeed feels like a genre-less approach and done with the intent on being intoxicatingly catchy.

Blue Sky Black Death - A Heap of Broken Images 2xLP

This got our vote as one of the best releases of last year! Producers Kingston and Young God, meld dark instrumentation blending eerie ambient samples, vocal snippets and live instrumentation that keeps the mood steady from start to finish. Not your typical instrumentals and then the raps are layed down over a similar style of beats on the second disc, giving you the feeling that this is really two completely different albums for the price of one! So the first CD is entirely instrumental, the second features a hefty load of guest MCs! The Mikah 9 song is nuts!!! Amazing, just hear for yourself.

Dwele - Sketches of a Man CD

In hip hop, most people like to either hide or keep their R&B separate, but only a few have achieved a respectable amount of crossover appeal that even the most underground heads can still appreciate good music when they hear it. For his third album, Sketches of A Man, the Detroit born Dwele lands himself on an independent label and admits that with his last album he didn't have as much time to compose and create the concepts he would have liked to convey on Some Kinda. Here, he puts the material and songwriting qualities before the beat, leaning for a more stripped down approach and less of the over-produced stuff that tends to drown out the essence of voice and lyrics. With more time and a bit more creative freedom to complete the album, Dwele hopes the album will definitely not come off as predictable R&B, but a deeper focus on lyrics and symbolic storytelling about life, love and relationships.

One Day As A Lion - One Day As A Lion CD EP

One Day As A Lion is the creation of Zack De La Rocha (RATM/Fender Rhodes, vocals) and Jon Theodore (Mars Volta/drums). They call it "music about space - the space between friends and collaborators where ideas form; the space in a song where the tension builds waiting for the next wave of sound..." The result, someone said, sounds like Led Zep meets Dr. Dre. Full length album this fall!

This got our vote as one of the best releases of last year! Producers Kingston and Young God have split this into two discs, the first consists of all brooding and deep grooved instrumental bliss, the
second features collaborations from some of your favorite MC's including Rob Sonic, Pep Love, Jus Allah, Guru, Awol One and more. Not your typical vocal versions + instrumentals. You really get two albums for the price of one courtesy of those cool cats over at MUSH! Seriously though, the Mikah 9 song is nuts!!! . And thats all we're saying...just hear for yourself.

The Black Keys - Attack & Release CD

The Akron, Ohio duo of singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney throw a curve-ball at their core audience and following by moving out of the garage and into the studio with Brian Burton, better known to us all as Danger Mouse. The fourth album Attack & Release still hits hard with The Black Keys' familiar rough edged rock and blues and psychedelic tones with welcome additions from DM, and marks the first time the group has featured guest appearances, also including vocals by Carla Monday and Jessica Lea Mayfield, Marc Ribot playing guitar solos, and Ralph Carney, adding jawharp, flute and clarinet to a handful of tracks.

Alias & Tarsier - Brookland/Oaklyn CD

Alias continues his incredible body of work teaming up this time with one half of the Brooklyn based Healamonster & Tarsier. The title of the album comes from the fact that these two gifted musicians had not yet met but, rather, sent each other the beats and vocals separately as Alias was, at the time, still living in Oakland. The finished product is one of the most beautiful albums in recent memory. Tarsiers voice carries us through Alias' dark soundscapes, where the beats work so well, that its just one of those albums where you can't help but to nod your head while listening. And a long awaited but very welcome return to Alias laying down lyrics on "Last Nail"! Anticon surprises us all with yet another very different release from a sound that was once synonomous with their name.

Musab - Slick's Box CD

Newly signed to the Hiero Imperium, Musab re-emerges after a long absence since his Rhymesayer's debut, under the alias Beyond from the underground classic "Comparison". The street-smart emcee's claim to fame came from his appearances on Ant's Headshots mixtapes and Atmosphere's Overcast, and would later join Slug, Mr. Gene Poole and I Self Divine for 1998's DynoSPECTRUM album, produced entirely by
Ant. After his second solo "Respect For Life" was met with only moderate underground success, he eventually parted ways with Rhymesayers over mild creative differences concerning the direction
of his next project. His Minnesota Slicks moniker is what he looks at more as a character piece about the tortured soul of a pimp as seen through the eyes of the South-side Minneapolis raised emcee. It can
be hard to pull off a free form storytelling album such as this, especially when the listeners mistakenly take it literally, but Musab draws from his own experiences and personal life, and with hip hop he is able to artistically convey this concept in a truthy fashion.

Hiero Imperium's first signing to their newly established Triple I League! Upcoming Bay Area talent, Knobody out of East Oakland drops The Cleanup with real West Coast sensibilities and less of a focus on the catchiness of the crap that seems to be coming out of the region as of late. Knobody is a lyricist very deserving of the opportunity he's been given and we will most likely hear more from him in the future as his new label mates continue to give praise. Featuring guest appearances by Mistah FAB, A-Plus, Casual and more. Our first run of these CD's are signed by Knobody himself!

Caltroit flexes Black Milk's producing muscle as he combines the rhythms of Detroit hip hop with a West Coast flare and ultimately creating a universal tone with club bangers and surface breeching beats.
Coming off the major word-of-mouth success of their last album Fly School Reunion, People Under the Stairs proteges Newman (Alex Newman), Maanumental (Jamaan Mclaren), and Chikaramanga (Chikara
Kurahashi) return for the forward thinking Electric Laser! Upping the ante a bit, the production takes on a new life for this sophomore effort, utilizing more current methods while still paying tribute to their jazzy throw back hip hop sound. And on an interesting note, and an increasingly growing trend, the group has
recorded the album on analog tape for a warmer, more full-bodied, sound.

The Legendary Jazz label Blue Note drops a definitive collection of originals as sampled by some of the greatest hip hop joints of all time. Here you'll find classics ranging anywhere from late 60s through mid-70s jazz-funk tracks compiled for the first time on one compilation. This could be considered just one page in the hip hop bible of sampling...and is the reason Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, The Beastie Boys, 2Pac and many others had songs that you fell in love with and they all originated from one place. This is like the Cliff's Notes of sampling...ok I'm done.

Latest EP from Rheteric, it basically serves as a glimpse at whats to come, with Thavius Beck and Daedelus said to be on production for his "in the works" full-length, here we have production handled by Johnny 5 and two tracks by Thavius to hold you over. Rheteric blew us all away after a recent unnanounced in-store guest appearance, and the moment "Reverse Engineering" started playing all of the attention was suddenly focused on him as he started shouting his verses at the top of his lungs and performed as if there was an entire band backing him up and 500 people watching! It has been a long time since we'd seen anybody come in here with that much energy, so look out for this guy because if he isn't destined for success then we don't what else to say about what we witnessed.

Presto's third full-length album brings us back to that refreshing, soulful, jazzy hip hop that we can all remember, without trying too hard to convince people it was his true intention. Production and beats like this seem to come naturally to the DJ and Producer, its his ear for what sounds good that has attracted such veterans as Large Professor, OC and Sadat X to his music, and not whats supposed to sound "right." Most people had the Culver City, CA native pegged as an East Coast head, but no matter what way you look at it theres no denying his skill, and so far each album can only get better. Also features guest appearances from Blu, Raashan Ahmad, Fat Lip, Trek Life and more! Comes with a DVD that plays the music video for the lead single "Conquer Mentally."

Theory Hazit has no problem handling the workload on any of his releases, taking on the task of both emceeing and producing most of the time. Here, the emcee is able to put the trust in producer Vintage, who sounds as if he was plucked right out of the 90's, and the greater focus with less tasks to worry about this time around is the lyrical content. This team up follows up 2007's Extra Credit and features appearances by Braille, Omega Watts, Sivion and members of Hazit's supergroup the Scribbling Idiots. Excellent production with an equally impeccable emcee, this might become one of the year's sleepers! And it may sound cliched but Lord Fire is serious HEAT!

Veteran New York-based and Wu-affiliated emcees Hell Razah and Shabazz the Disciple commit to shining a light on the housing projects that served as a creative breeding ground for many mid-nineties hip hop artists. Boasting a deep rooted history with the Wu-Tang Clan, Razah and Shabazz were core members of Sunz of Man, and guested on several classic Wu-member solos and side projects over the years. Now, assuming the roles of tour guides, Welcome To Red Hook Houses pays homage to and illuminates the significance of the place they and many others like them grew up in as it contributed to the development of their early years in the "golden age" of hip-hop.

When referring to the term, 'old school' in hip hop, it is more or less equivalant to the use of the term 'classic rock'. Meaning, within its respective genre, it holds the same relevance today, as it did when it was first released. And the key word here being 'classic'. With as many terms as you can try come up with to classify the music, it refuses to be outdated, because good music will live on forever...across all genres. This album is, in the eyes, ears and hearts of many, one of the most influential albums in hip hop history.

Previously out of print this was supposed to be the single that launched The Boulevard Connection's Denmark hip hop record label back in 2000 but slipped through the cracks in a very crowded year for hip hop and for some reason went overlooked, even though it featured The Last Emperor and Iriscience and DJ Babu over one seriously dope beat.
Factor - The Chandelier CD

On Fake Four Records, Canadian producer Factor has made a name for himself over the better half of the last ten years providing beats for major underground players including members of the Living Legends, Project Blowed and the Shapeshifters as well as home-country heroes the Swollen Members! Building this reputation allowed him to create his own label (Sideroad Records) which has become a haven for underground Canadian artists. With Factor at the helm of almost every release, this makes him one of the hardest working producers out there. The Chandelier marks perhaps some of Factor's best work to date and features appearances by Ceschi Ramos (Toca, Anonymous Inc.), Awol One, Kirby Dominant, Moka Only, Josh Martinez, hip hop legend Sadat X and more! Again excellent production and a great mix of emcees contributing make this one of the most solid releases of the year!

Eight years since its announcement and over three years in the actual making, Hip Hop icon Del The Funky Homosapien finally releases Eleventh Hour! Founder of the mighty Hieroglyphics crew and the alternative choice MC for legions of loyal fans around the world, Del and Hiero have helped shape the genre into new molds over the years, as they are always on the front lines of innovation. With such heavy expectations due to the hiatus - yes, there was a lot of hype...and buzz over-kill, but Del wanted to sit back and do what he does best.
If there's anyone that knows how to make some jazzy hip hop beats, then you know The Sound Providers can deliver. The producing duo, originally from San Diego, are constantly dropping aural jems. Have you ever heard a bad Sound Providers beat? Exactly! Although Jason Skills has moved to other side of the country to Florida, Soulo remains in San Diego. The migration to Florida is where Jason Skills, met up with Floridian MC, Surreal, and what a a beautiful cross-nation trio this has become! Jazzy fresh beats that you cannot ever get tired of and the lyrical prowress of Surreal makes this a definite one to own!

Odd Nosdam - Pretty Swell Explode 2xLP

As it was done for Alias with Collected Remixes, Anticon's oddest producer Odd Nosdam gets a better than "best of" treatment with Pretty Swell Explode. A collection of b-sides, remixes done for others and exclusives! The sonic, atmospheric, lo-fi beatsmith has been a mainstay over the years and this album is proof of his range as he provides his unique style to remixes unrecognizable to their original counterparts for the likes of Boards of Canada, Thee More Shallows, Alias and Tarsier among others. Featuring appearances and contributions for this release by Jel, Dax, Why? and Jessica Bailiff. If you're into this stuff I highly recommend you pick it up, because it can be hard tracking down the original releases where some of these tracks have appeared.

Telephone Jim Jesus - Anywhere Out Of The... LP

All new instrumental album from Restiform Bodies beat-head Telephone Jim Jesus. Its been three long years since Anticon gave his A Point Too Far For An Astronaut album a proper release, in the time that passed he helped contribute to other releases from the label, including Sole's Live From Rome, Alias and Tarsier, fellow Bodies members Passage on his Forcefield Kids solo, and a live album with The Bomarr Monk. Touring the country for Anticon billed shows he found himself overseas, soul searching, collecting himself and exlporing the history, ruins, and gothic architecture of Eastern Europe. On his journey back to the United States he even found time to do reconstruction work in hurricane ravaged communities in the aftermath of Katrina. The album speaks volumes instrumentally, and is a musical testament to the inspirations, as well as the devesations he encountered on of his travels.

A title that suggests both an authentic street sound (Block) combined with his lyrical and conceptual versatility in the underground (Basement) is the key to covering all the right bases in hip hop music.
Alias & Ehren - Lillian CD

A collaboration between Alias and his multi-talented instrumentalist brother, Ehren, on the flute, saxophone and clarinet. The album is a tribute to their late grandmother, Lillian. It's some pretty deep stuff, very heavy beats and some great buildups utilizing Ehren's talents on the live instrumentation over Alias' explosive, beat-filled symphonies. One of the best albums Anticon has ever put out! All the artists on this label have really grown, and are leading very interesting and very different solo careers. It's not over yet, keep listening after track 13 for something truly haunting and beautiful.
