Magic Heart Genies - Heartifact CD

DJ DREZ, MYKA 9 and JtheSarge disguised as globe trotting genies! I love the name of the group, the title of the album, the album itself and I love the idea behind it! The concept is love of course. But the essence of the message is not just understanding the meaning by definition, but its purpose overall. If the body cannot live without the mind, than love can't exist without the heart. Basically, through organic vibes and conscious albums such as these, we can set aside ideologies as they pertain to our personal, political and philosophical beliefs and even those related to the current state of hip hop if not just music in general, and focus on our lives as individuals with the power of free will to experience the world abroad.

Obba Supa - TO: AM - FREE: AM CD

Even though hip hop out of the UK is in the English language the accents can sometimes still come across so foreign to American audiences. But Emcee Teknical Developments alongside producer Hey!zeus really made it hard for me to tell they are from London because Project Mooncircle and Hip Hop Vinyl have released yet another gem! This label has been so consistent over the years that it's become almost impossible to find a bad release. Jazzy beats, but a little darker and abstract with conscious lyrics may sound cliche
in the underground but this one's an exception. It's deep, it's meditative, it's not grime-rap...this is pure hip hop. The atmosphere of the album kind of reminded me of Serengeti and Polyphonic's Anticon release Terradactyl (my top pick of 2009). Obba Supa is a real surprise and pretty much blew me away...Heat!

Thaione Davis - Still Hear CD

Over the last few years Thaione Davis has consistently and carefully put out quality hip hop and is easily one of the most promising emcees out of Chicago in years. Still Hear Follows up his 2007 album Burgundy (The Antebellum Collection), and teams him with producer Rashid Hadee who has produced for a number of other Chicago area artists and even a track on Little Brother's Get Back. Featuring guest appearances by Infinito 2017, Longshot and more. It's got both a late 90's and current feel set to the backdrop of Southside Chicago and overall is definitely not one to sleep on.

John Robinson & MF Doom - Who Is This Man? (import) CD

Who Is This Man? is the other new album from John Robinson produced entirely by MF Doom. Executed in the brilliant classic story line fashion that MF Doom is known for it acts like an audio- biography of the mind and heart of a man named John Robinson and his stealth quest to uphold hip hop culture to the fullest. With his Nas-like vocal tone and calm demeanor akin to C.L Smooth, Robinson aka Lil Sci of Scienz Of Life has been rocking mics since the early 90's. All scratches and cuts by DJ Rhettmatic of the World Famous Beat Junkies and again it is produced by MF Doom.

Rush Hour Records presents Beat Dimensions Volume Two! Compiled by Cinnaman and Jay Scarlett and featuring soon to be known in a much better light names including Danny Breaks, DJ Adlib, Mono/Poly, Dizz1, Dimlite and more! Featuring a lot of Flying Lotus style beats for comparison, with a little dubstep, but just think of a harder version of both, raw and dirty but not alienating to the listener. Basically, the headnod factor is through the roof! Broken up into two EP's with a third on the way...HEAT!

Foul Mouth Cringe - Richard DastardlyIdentity CD

Often we need reminders on what separates the underground from the unsigned wannabee rappers and their mainstream counterparts and this is one of those examples! Roughneck Jihad of Third Sight teams up with DJ Ruthless and D-Styles for some raw, hardcore, abstract, circus-style raps, rough beats and scratching. It's a bizarre ride but you enjoy every twist, turn and loop-d-loop they take you through. It's the type of hip hop that, again, reminds us why even in the underground things are always going to be different and changing; but there are always people who think they have the right definitions for what makes the underground what it is...and this is the type of album that tells those people to GTFO!
Glen Porter - Something Glue 12" EP

Phenomenal downtempo instrumental album from soon-to-be talked about producer Glen Porter! Moody, beautiful and dreamy and most importantly it is instantly hypnotic and uncontrollably headnod-inducing...you'll find yourself in a strange state of melancholic bliss upon listening. But I suppose I am one of those people who takes their instrumental hip hop way too seriously so let me be clear when I say there is a difference between beats and instrumental production, because these are expertly crafted epic
soundscapes that will be considered timeless for years to come. Something Glue allows your mind to wander and paint the pictures of the music in your head...like the perfect song choice for the ending
credits to a movie, or the soundtrack montage of your own life story as if played back on celluloid as you close your eyes. Absolutely breathtaking!

Lambent - Smoothness Extract CD

Smoothness Extract (Deep Night At Ishigaki) is Lambent's third full-length album, and his first on the Project Mooncircle label. Whilst his earlier work was rooted in Ambient and Electronic music, this record presents his sound in the context of Instrumental Hip Hop, with strong elements of Electronic music still present. You could group this record with the recent wave of Dilla inspired Hip Hop, but equally you could group it with Autechre when they're at 90 BPM. The record came about after Project Mooncircle heard some of Lambent's tracks and fell in love with the calmer and smoother pieces of his often intense sound. Hence, Lambent compiled these seventeen extracts from the smoother side of his repertoire. This album is made as his dedication towards a small Japanese island, the Isle of Ishigaki. Lambent is originally from Japan (although he has lived in Berlin for many years), but he has never visited this place. The album is the sound track to a summer time night trip around the Island, visiting the many different aspects of the scenery, nature, feelings, emotions, sights and sounds as Lambent imagines them.

However it is thanks to his touring that we even have the Soundcatcher Extras. It features live recordings from the tour, newly inspired tracks and remixes previously available only on vinyl. Plus remixes that were submitted as part of an online contest and now compiled onto this formidable companion piece to what many already consider his best work to date.

Just another reason why we tend to love whatever Lex puts out next. The beats are heavy and worldly. Think Madlib meets Visioneers in a jazzy way with a little bit of brazilian influence to it.

Through the course of his career as a solo artist and member of the Visionaries, LMNO has worked with some of the world's best beat-makers including: JayDee, Pete Rock, Madlib, OhNo, Beat Junkies JRocc, Babu, Rhettmatic, and more. With a high standard for superb production, LMNO launches out of the West Coast underground and collaborates with one of France's premiere emerging producers Yann Kesz. With gritty soulful samples and undulating beat production, it only seems appropriate that these two gems + single exclusive from the full-length album Devilish Dandruff With Holy Shampoo, would be released on the trustiest format for hip-hop, ahh yess, vinyl.

More throw-back funk and electro-boogie beats from Dam Funk on Stones Throw! For fans of the time-traveling styles of fellow label mate James Pants or Anticon's Tobacco, the synth-y, p-funky four track maxi-12" follow up to his previous single "Burgundy City" is yet another mind boggling trip back to the early 80's or late 70's style of forgotten electronic funk. Seriously, was this guy placed in a cryogenic chamber and thawed out by Peanut Butter Wolf?! Dam Funk is truly a mad-funk scientist and hopefully a full length is due out soon.

Swollen Members - Armed to the Teeth CD

Swollen Members have risen to the top of the underground hip-hop scene with a series of classic albums that have made them one of the genre's brightest rising stars. Founded by two of the Vancouver's most recognized MCs, Mad Child and Prevail, along with the help of DJ Rob The Viking, the group has created a huge fan base while staying completely independent under their own label Battle Axe Records. Swollen had taken a break over the past few years while Mad Child dealt with some legal issues, but, the group has come back stronger than ever with their brand new album Armed To The Teeth which Prevail says "a prequel to another new album that will becoming out in 2010 called Beautiful Death Machine." Featuring guest appearances by Talib Kweli, Moka Only, Krondon & Phil Da Agony (of Strong Arm Steady), Everlast & Slaine (of La Coka Nostra) Tech N9NE and newly added member Tre Nyce. Also featuring production by DJ Kemo of Canada's other most famously recognized rap groups The Rascalz, Moka Only and more.

Anticipated follow-up to arguably one of DJ Drez's most popular original works! Combining organic, jazzy hip hop, with world-beat, African and Middle Eastern instruments and rhythms, Jahta Beat 2 picks up right where the original left off! Very meditative and easy to get lost in, Drez has captivated us with what I believe must be a hundred unique mixes by now. The range of his musical knowledge is manifest in his new creation, the Progression.

Eric B & Rakim - Follow the Leader (180 g) LP

Legendary hip-hop duo Eric B. and Rakim's second album Follow the Leader from back in 1988 gets a re-issue on vinyl! This follow up to Paid In Full was proof that hip hop was ready for a change as it broke out of its early 80's formalities and prepared us all for the 90's! Of course hip hop fans love to reference the Golden Era when it comes to the classics but to truly respect the art form as it changed before our very eyes and ears you have to go back and grab some of the late 80's freshness that broke all the rules, reminding the world that hip hop was here to stay. Word!

DOOM (MF Doom) - Operation Doomsday CD

Finally! One of the most sought after releases by the elusive MF Doom finally gets re-issued for a whole new generation of fans that missed out on this during the heyday of its original release in 1999 and its subsequent re-issue in 2001. Previously there were issues over the unauthorized use of the Marvel Comics imagery of the Fantastic Four's arch enemy Dr. Doom, who dons the metal mask to hide his scarred face and is bent on world domination. Now that the comic book leader of the industry has a mountain of cash from the film adaptations of most of their major properties, going after the little guy must no longer be on the list, not even the shortlist. It was a different story in the late 90's when they almost went bankrupt and tried to squeeze every little penny they could, resulting in the cease and desist that pulled Operation Doomsday from shelves and some speculate, may have caused some of the financial hardships of Fondle 'Em Records. Enough with my geek-gasms though, and let's rejoice, it's finally back, and even though it bounced around to many different labels promising a huge re-packaging and special edition, it eventually made its rightful way back to Viktor Vaughn the villain himself on Metal Face Records. An undisputed underground classic, and not necessarily the one that put Doom on the map, but the one that got the ball rolling!

Ultimate Breaks & Beats - Instrumentals Vol. 3 2xLP

Third in the series of re-worked and extended breakdowns of the classic Breaks and Beats catalog! Because simply giving you the plain originals has been done and compiled in many different ways would be too boring... Traffic has decided to make things interesting, UB&B Vol. 1 was recreated by El Michel's Affair and got things going, while Vol. 2 was headed by Mr. Chop! Players from The Revelations and other live instrumentation were recorded to bring us all the classic Rock breaks used in hip hop through theyears for Volume 3 while the first two focused on the classic funk and soul breaks. Like the others, these are extended, with even more live band inclusions and extensions in length making it very user, producer and DJ friendly! HEAT!

Cage - The Best & Worst Of Cage CD

A major contributor to the independent Hip Hop scene for a decade, Cage (aka Cage Kennylz) returns with a greatest hits CD comprised of his classic singles, most notably "Agent Orange", which sampled the theme from Stanley Kubrick's film A Clockwork Orange, which also played on his alter-ego, "Alex the Worm King"; tracks off his two Eastern Conference Records albums, Movies For The Blind, Weatherproof; collaboration efforts, and previously unreleased tracks. Known for not only his music and legendary beef with Eminem (each claimed the other had appropriated the style of tightly controlled delivery and unsettling subject matter), but also his life story. Many of his lyrics were inspired by his experiences in a mental institution as a teenager. Cage has become the focal point of a proposed Biopic to be written and directed by Hollywood star Shia LaBeouf. The Best and Worst of Cage is comprised of 19 songs fueled with energy, angst, and top notch production.

Fashawn - Boy Meets World CD

Hailing from Fresno, California, Fashawn has all the charisma of a modern-day emcee and the rhyming chops of a veteran beyond his years. For a 20-year-old, his raw talent, songwriting ability and versatility, is very mature; and as child from the 90's rather than the 80's his love for traditional and golden era hip hop is evident over Exiles production on the entire album. "Boy Meets World is just a story about a kid growing up," explains Fashawn. "It's my story, it's very honest, it's very in depth. So whatever you thought you knew about me, listen to this and you'll really get a good look at who I am. It's going to be classic." This one has gotten so much buzz lately and making its way on many top picks of 2009 lists as we head to the end of the year. Featuring guest appearances by Aloe Blacc, Mistah FAB and Evidence. While supplies last, when you
purchase "Boy Meets World" you get free: Fashawn's "The Antidote" limited mixtape CD compiled and produced by The Alchemist.

El Michels Affair - Enter the 37th Chamber LP

This one has been on the buzz back burner for a long time ever since El Michels Affair first dropped their now sought after 7 inch singles of live band re-interpretations of the Wu Tang Classics "C.R.E.A.M" and "Duel of the Iron Mics," which also featured "Glaciers of Ice" and "Bring Da Ruckus". Despite all of the advances in computer recording technology, home studios, and electronic instruments, nothing quite comes close to the analog recording techniques of the past for recreating the mood and sound of vintage funk and soul. El Michels Affair are among the leaders of a resurgent movement from New York City that's sweeping the music communities around the world to renew interest in the forgotten sounds that still inspire many to this day. After finding a hip hop audience they were beckoned to back Raekwon on a special tour sponsored by Scion, which lead to the amazingly dope single "The PJ's (remix)" featuring the Wu-emcee on Leon Michel's and Jeff Silverman's Truth and Soul Records. Which then lead to the

Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement 2xLP

Stones Throw has had its share of hits over the years, and measuring that success in the underground and abroad may not always balance out, but they just might have a real crossover on their hands with Mayer Hawthorne! Getting praise already from big time celebs like Justin Timberlake and John Mayer, and even Ghostface Killah jumping on board and snatching him up for a tour, Hawthorne is the new "It" kid in many music circles! His almost fetishistic love for 50's and 60's motown is matched only by his authentic ability to re-create it! So convincing, so freakishly accurate it's almost scary. Throwback is "in" right now, and I mean to reference Sharon Jones and the Daptones, Budos Band, El Michel's Affair, and plenty of others who bring a real vibrant and traditional funk and soul sound that you'd be able to fool an expert with. A Strange Arrangement brings it back to the sad solo vocalist, to the unique love ballads of doo wop in its hey day! I say this all the time...but hearing is believing...seriously! Everything is coming back full circle, where funk and soul were some of the groundwork that made hip hop music possible, we've come back to love and appreciate just why that is with this revivalist revolution. ("The Ills" 7-inch is ONLY for people who buy the second pressing - which does NOT include the bonus 4.5-inch record.)

Mayer Hawthorne - Maybe So, Maybe No 12" Single

Newly signed to Stones Throw and dropping his second single on the label (the first was a limited red heart-shaped vinyl that seems to be out of print now) he is also the former and little known producer/DJ Haircut for the Ann Arbor, Michigan, group Now On, contributing also for Labtechs and the Athletic Mic League. With no formal vocal training, and only his love and passion for authentic 70's Funk and Soul, the vinyl junkie played the instruments and produced his own work and pieced it all together to win over the likes of Peanut Butter Wolf and make fans out Gilles Peterson. Upon hearing, it is unbelievable to think that this all came from one man, now a front runner for the revivalist movement that has blown up over the last few years. Honestly, if you heard this single with no knowledge of it all, you'd be fooled into thinking it actually came from the 70's! Two-tracks plus the instrumentals.

Carlos Nino - Suite For Ma Dukes LP

Production powerhouse Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson have worked together on a variety of projects for several years now. Suite For Ma Dukes grew out of when Nino hired Atwood-Ferguson's string quartet, Supernova, to perform on Dwight Trible & The Life Force Trio's "Love is the Answer" (Ninja Tune) in 2004. On that same Dwight Tribble album project, Nino met and then licensed a track from one of his heroes, James "Jay Dee/J Dilla" Yancey. After Dilla's untimely death only two years later, Nino and Atwood-Ferguson chose to pay tribute to Dilla by continuing the musical conversation that he had started, but in the contemporary chamber music style that Atwood-Ferguson had been developing. Suite for Ma Dukes is the first official release of this music and is Hip Hop as you have never heard. All four tracks cover Dilla's magic, giving treatment to Jay Dee classics from Common, A Tribe Called Quest, and Slum Village. In each, the harmonic and melodic beauty of Dilla's music is liberated. Earlier this year, the project received the official blessing from Ma Dukes herself and part of the proceeds from the record will go to Dilla's heirs.

Breakestra - Dusk Till Dawn LP

Breakestra return with their long-awaited sophomore set exploring all colors of the funk spectrum on this follow up to their critically acclaimed 2005 Ubiquity album Hit The Floor. Built around the vision of Music Man Miles and Mixmaster Wolf (as well as producing, Miles plays drums, bass, guitars, keys and percussion on the record), the trademark Breakestra touches remain intact as Wolf fronts tough breakbeat jams while Miles himself brings his soulful vocals Dusk Till Dawn alongside the addition of an amazing new female vocalist Afrodyete. The album itself is also a tribute to Tackett's late DJ partner at Rootdown, DJ Dusk, whose life was tragically taken in a road accident in 2007. Dusk himself appears alongside Jurassic 5's Chali 2NA on the funky "Posed To Be."

Myka 9 (Mikah 9) - Citrus Sessions CD

This is the album that Myka originally released on his website, mykanyne.com for free to his fans for being so great over the years..But here it is for you to purchase one now! Overall, this album is dope and pretty much goes along the lines of the 'American Nighmare' album. Very good and holds weight throughout. Mykah is known well for switching up styles and this album is no exception, because he'll switch it up for you in classic Mykah Nyne taste that is sure to have all the Mykah/Freestyle Fellowship fans rockin' for quite a long time..

Prolyphic & Reanimator - The Ugly Truth CD

Strange Famous Records branches out to become a full-fledged music label that will now sign and release new artists and groups starting with Prolyphic and Reanimator's The Ugly Truth. Prolyphic hails from
label owner Sage Francis' hometown of Providence, Rhode Island with his longtime collaborator and producer Reanimator from Chicago. This handpicked duo has turned out to be just the right combination as
Prolyphic delivers powerful rhymes over Reanimator's heavily layered beats. If you're a fan of Galapogos4 stuff, Glue or Anticon's earlier releases, this one won't disappoint!

Why? - Eskimo Snow LP

Brand new from Why? as Yoni Wolf has adopted his stage name to include his entire band which also includes his brother Josiah on drums. For quite a few years now Why?'s work on Anticon can no longer be classified as hip hop, folk hop or even avant garde hop as it used to get labeled. These days they are more indie rock than anything, but there is still something about their sound that makes it different from everything else. On an interesting note...many of these tracks were recorded during their 2007 sessions in the making of Alopecia. Longtime fans won't want to miss out.

Odd Nosdam - T.I.M.E. Soundtrack LP

Daaammmn! Anticon veteran producer and beatsmith Odd Nosdam serves up some raw beats on this soundtrack to the Element Skateboarding video, This Is My Element. Really it's the first of its kind as far as tapping a producer to compose original music for the segments included throughout the film. Again the beats here are raw and hard as hell, simple and quick to the point, more in touch with what Odd Nosdam used to crank out back in the earlier days of Plan 9, Meat Your Hypnotist, and No More Wig For Ohio. Anticon naysayers might actually dig this, and longtime fans like myself already know what's up! HEAT!
