Flying Lotus - Los Angeles CD

There is a general feeling that what's been done can never be recreated, and in era of post-Dilla producers, no one wants the comparison and most people dare not make it. So, what is originally meant to be a compliment that is hard to live up to, becomes an unwilling attempt for and artist to remain original, despite the overwhelming similarities. It's next-gen producers like Flying Lotus, Dr. Who Dat and Dabrye who carry this burden lately, and have to shake off the "next Dilla" tags they are often given. Not because they don't want them, but I can see where it would be a problem, because it appears as if Dilla created his own genre since his passing, and that genre could be called Dilla-esque. My only question, is it really such a bad thing? For his Warp debut Flying Lotus takes his unique brand of electronica, which is derived from many other traditionally sampled genres in hip hop such as funk, soul and jazz, to levels barely touched on with last Fall's Reset EP. The DJ and producer gained momentum in the underground LA scene with heavily passed around self made remixes, as his music from debut album 1983 even landed spots on Adult Swim promos. Los Angeles shows an extreme amount of progressive growth from his last album to the next, and is a true sign that this genius in the making has only just begun to show us what he is capable of.

Various Artists - Lost Episodes vol. 1&2 2xCD

From a time when New York City underground hip hop was at its peak and in its prime comes "The Lost Episodes." Legendary lyricists were appearing at venues such as Nuyorican Poet's Cafe, SOB's, Vinyl, Lyricist Lounge and recording out of studios such as FireHouse, D&D and Chun-King just to mention a few. Monikers come to mind such as Natural Elements comprised of Mr. Voodoo aka AGU, L-Swift aka SWIGGA and Anthony Cruz aka A-Butta. House of Repz which included A.L. Skillz, Benny Blanco from the Bronx aka BEN.Y., Jedi aka Son of Spock, Absolute and recently added members EchoOne and Oktober Zero. Lyrical Wizards such as Matrix & the Pyramindz, Punchline, Wordsworth, Avatar, Animosity, Cyanide, Sir Menelik aka Scaramanga Shallah, Godfather Don and the list goes on and on. These were the days when Microphone Controllers inspired one another to write sharp lyrics, and being skillful at your craft actually carried weight in the streets. In this exclusive series producer Kenny Diaz takes you inside the often talked about and never duplicated realm of the New York Underground scene at its grittiest, its finest and in its purest form. Included are unreleased tracks from various artists who recorded with Kenny Diaz in the dungeons of the NYC underground. Now that the vaults have been opened by Kenny Diaz, Destro88 and Kings Link Recordz, you've got a prime source for that raw uncut NYC 90s Hip Hop.

Massive Attack - Heligoland CD

90's Trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack return with their fifth full length album! Heligoland is the long awaited follow-up to 2003's critically-acclaimed 100th Window. Long time cohort Horace Andy makes a return alongside Massive Attack founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grant Marshall (Daddy G). Featuring guest vocals on every track including Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio and Damon Albarn of Gorillaz who also provides bass and keys contributions. This combines the best of their humble electric beginnings and combines it with their more modern day sound incorporating live instrumentation. Fans of Portishead and Unkle and all other comparisons that apply will love this!

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach CD

The brainchild of iconic singer Damon Albarn and Tank Girl co-creator Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz are made up of mysterious and imaginative cartoon characters. While the image is powerful, it is the music that has ultimately made this project such a multi-million selling success. Albarn's ability to diversify musically shows no signs of slowing down on Plastic Beach, the follow-up to 2005's Demon Days. Collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Little Dragon and more make this a truly special album

Cadence Weapon - Breaking Kayfabe CD

Now available stateside! Rollie Pemberton hails from Edmonton, and as Cadence Weapon, Breaking Kayfabe is the mc/producer's brave attempt at breaking any preconceived notions one might have about Canadian hip hop. The thing that our neighbors to the North benefit from, is a lack of territorial perception about East and West, or North and Southside hip hop stylings. I don't think there are people in Vancouver who are indifferent about the hip hop that comes out of Toronto. Cadence Weapon sounds, well, unlike anything I've ever heard out of Canada. At least not since the early days of Buck 65. Lo-fi, blip-hop and bass-y. I can't think of anyone who has ever added something that sounds like a didgeridoo to something else that sounds like an 8-bit Nintendo beat! His flow comes off as dry, sarcastic and witty and often shifts to an assertive slurring baritone. Bottom line, hearing is believing, and this guy has got something brewing inside of him, whether its his ear for producing something thats never been done before or a sense of humor he manages to sneak in just before the song gets too serious.

Paying tribute to Dilla with a spacey instrumental laced with the kind of soul and jazz keys that Dilla championed so beneficially into the hip hop realm! But still, this is a trademark Spinna cut with a deeper electric tone overall and a funky beat. "When Planets Collide" is a heavier, more layered track on the flip side.

DJ Dusk - Soundclash DVD

In 2001, the Los Angeles club the Root Down put on their first of a three part series called "Sound Clash." It featured Madlib and Cut Chemist going head-to-head, beat-for-beat for respect in front of a packed club. Each of the tracks had never been released and with each of the three rounds, the excitement rose. The last round unleashed a partisan celebration from the captivated crowd and it was a beautiful underground Hip Hop moment. Mochilla founders, Coleman and B+, went to the first round with their Sony PC100 single chip cameras with intentions of trying out their new toys; however, "It wasn't until afterwards that we put both cameras on the floor, rewound the tapes and played them in sync that we realized we might have something." Root Down, approximately a year later, organized the second battle. Round Two featured a pre-multi-platinum Will.I.Am and Thes One and again, both Mochilla founders duly attended with the aforementioned cameras and caught the entire night's proceedings. The drama and controversy of Round Two with huge aesthetic differences on display as well as the theatrics of clothes being taken off and ludicrous names made the night a talking point in Los Angeles to this day in beat maker circles. The last battle featured Oh No and Exile in 2003 and with a relatively dignified display by the youngest pairing of the three, they closed the series with good music and much respect. Mochilla never intended to release this DVD but since the tragic passing of DJ Dusk, they felt it was important to honor his legacy and share his gifts. This is for him: no edits, no overdubs, and no interruptions - just raw Hip Hop at its most exciting, vital and real.

Jazzy beats from producer Tone Atlas recall the sample-laden glory days of the early nineties, with lead rapper Emcee Sick adding a uniquely dense wordplay that makes We'll Keep Looking one of the more promising first-entries by a hip hop group in a minute. Guest appearances by Grap Luva and Vinia Mojica.

In Search of Stoney Jackson is produced entirely by Madlib, longtime friend of Phil Da Agony and extended Strong Arm Steady family. The album's conception owes a great deal to World Famous Beat Junkie, J.Rocc, who provided the trio with close to 200 of the Madlib the Beat Konducta's tracks to choose from. Strong Arm Steady had previously rapped over Madlib productions on the Madlib and Talib Kweli Liberation album, but this full-length marks a long-desired collaboration between the four. It's a hip-hop jam session, with the group acting as the rhythm section for an all-star cast of guest vocalists such as Planet Asia, Guilty Simpson, Evidence, Chase Infinite, and Phonte of Little Brother.

Themselves - CrownsDown CD

From the Anticon website: "Seven months after the release of theFREEhoudini - the celebrated mixtape that announced Themselves' return - Doseone and Jel drop CrownsDown, a careful and vicious exhibition of mastered rap tactics and sampling ethics. Themselves' third album proper has been gestating in the gut of this seminal group for some time. It's both a return to form and a honing of what's come before (Subtle, cLOUDDEAD, Deep Puddle Dynamics) - both the opus that these lionhearted two were always meant to make, and the album that their hip-hop-obsessed teen aged selves always hoped to hear. On CrownsDown, Themselves hold back nothing, welding brute skill to a concrete set of tracks that represents an essential ten commandments of rap. In preparation, Doseone and Jel revisited their beloved hip-hop collections (e.g. Gang Starr, Ultramagnetic MCs, Public Enemy, Saafir) and whittled down the recurring themes that made their favorite records so sturdy. Each song on CrownsDown represents one of these archetypes - you'll find the "don't bite" song, the diss track, the story rap, the "bootleggers beware" song, and the "don't fuck with my DJ" jam, among others. In this way, Themselves revisit something classic in order to invent their own future-school entry to the annals."

Deeskee & Existereo - Hopeless Crooks with.. CD

Two of LA's finest connect to make a heavily expansive and eclectic album. Deeskee has been twisting knobs for quite some time now, producing for handfuls of groups and MC's including 2Mex, The Shapeshifters, Josh Martinez, Tommy V, Neila and countless others. Existereo, has been around for a long time, MC'ing as a member in a number of groups including Shapeshifters, Overfiendz, WhyKnows and most recently Candy's .22. Together they have created an album that not only gives glimpses of their previous efforts, but also offers great insight into their musical taste. A little something for everybody on this one, not to mention a nice line up of guests including $Martyr, Medusa, Myka Nyne, barfly, Mickey Avalon, and more!

Georgia Anne Muldrow - King's Ballad 2xLP

I'm afraid I've lost count of how many albums this is from her, but if one thing is for sure its that Georgia Anne Muldrow is an incredibly busy, talented and gifted woman. The album is "a celebration of creativity and uniqueness, things that are necessary to a meaningful life expression. It's about being yourself." Slicing pop n'lock-friendly funk with gospel and gracious soul, it appears the seeds of her early experimental releases are now blossoming as her trademark scattershot beats and adventurous deep jazz melodies have grown to become the backbone for fully crafted songs. Partner (MC and producer Dudley Perkins) describes the release as her most "pop" record to date. If only all pop was this free-spirited and barefaced. With aspirations to be a modern-day Quincy Jones, Muldrow is truly a renaissance musician. She is always looking to take her craft to a higher ground. She channels her unstoppable creativity into music that is commercially viable but does not lose sight of her essence as an artist who challenges the norm.

Giovanni Marks (Subtitle) - Marks in Angles CD

Giovanni Marks has been a mainstay in the underground (LA and beyond) since the early ninetees having made a name for himself under the alias Subtitle. From the Library to West Coast Workforce to Lab Waste, as well as handfuls of self-made and self-distributed albums, he's earned himself quite a cult following. This album (the first from 2Mex's newly formed label as well as the first under his own name) signals his departure from not only the Subtitle moniker, but conversely his return to the lo-fi minimalism that caught listeners early on. This is vintage Sub-T without a needed alias.

Critical Madness - Bringing Out the Dead CD

Critical Madness (cRITICAL + Madness) is the combination of two legendary battle vets who originally met in the Orlando hip-hop scene and eventually partnered up after competing for the same crown in the final round of numerous open mic freestyle tournaments. What started as a couple of CM tracks has now manifested into their debut album "Bringing Out The Dead", released through Domination Recordings, which features collaborations with Slaughterhouse front man Joell Ortiz as well as Sabac Red, Young Zee, long-time collaborator Little Vic and others. Covering the production side, TEMPERMENTAL produced the bulk of the LP with TzariZM adding his own brand of sickness to the stew. Marco Polo and DC the MIDI alien also contributed to the soon-to-be classic. "BOTD" covers everything from the politics down to pornography using clever lyricism & unique wordplay over infectious melodies laced with some boom bap. It is the experience of a lifetime and gives a slight peek into the influences that created this mind bending duo.

Souls of Mischief - Montezuma's Revenge 2xCD

This is most eagerly awaited Souls of Mischief album ever! Montezuma's Revenge was created the old-fashioned way, with the MCs, A-Plus, Phesto, Opio & Tajai, and producers, Prince Paul & Domino, in the lab together from the beginning to the end of the recording process. "We rented a house" explains Opio. "Prince Paul came out, we had no distractions, we just did music every day. "It was cool" adds Tajai. "He had concepts, and it's good to have an outside perspective - it was a great process." The result is a cohesive, creative Hip Hop album, the kind of project you'd expect from veterans like Souls of Mischief under the auspices of a genius producer like Prince Paul. Souls first encountered Prince Paul while touring with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul back in the day. But it was on a more recent tour with Handsome Boy Modeling School that the seeds of this collaboration were planted. So what exactly is Montezuma's Revenge? Tajai comments, "We recorded the album on Montezuma Street." The final product features 18 tracks of the quality Hip Hop you've come to expect from Hieroglyphics, with cover art by esteemed illustrator Steve Lopez (famous for his illustrations of Erykah Badu and others). Of course there's more to the title than the location of the recording, Tajai says "The deeper meaning is this album will make you crap yourself."

14KT - The Golden Hour 2xLP

Producer/MC and DJ 14KT has been working steadily as a member of Michigan hip hop collective the Athletic Mic League and the producing team of the Lab Techs! He's been a big player in helping launch what looks to be a long and successful career run for Buff1 and has produced for plenty of other Michigan area artists. The mostly instrumental affair is full of breathtaking sample work and beautiful sonic ambiance that fills the voids between the drums. The Golden Hour, in medical terms, is apparently that last stretch to revive an ailing patient to a full recovery, which inspired 14KT to finally unveil his solo outing in search of his own meaning. It is very much in keeping with the unique sounds of the hip hop movement coming out of Detroit and greater surrounding areas like An Arbor as of late, it is also reminiscent of J-Dilla (not just throwing that out there either) and others leading by example like Black Milk. It should also be said that this is not the type of album you prefer to hear lyrics over while listening, because that would merely cheapen the effort into some kind of sales pitch for shopping beats. You can really feel 14KT speaking through the music here, which may sound cliche, but in this case it's true.

They are filled with jumps, cross referenced with Bossa, notated with Folkloric chants, pointed with Jazz. Lyrical, dirty and strikingly beautiful. Speto De Rua Volume 1, named after Madlib's favorite food from the trip, chicken skewers coated with farofa (found on the streets of Olinda).

Eligh - Gandalf's Beat Machine 3 CD

Officially pressed on CD after previously only being available as digital download! It's been eight years since the last Beat Machine came out and Eligh has no doubt been busy with his crew and his own solo work along with side projects and plenty of production duties in the time that has passed. But under the persona of Gandalf, the Living Legends member has always brought something different to the table. These are abstract extractions of sonic sounds and samples and pieced together by an artist with no limits. Eligh's lyrics are poetry on paper, but part of Gandalf's poetry is his production and the only way to enjoy it is for it to be heard. Aside from maybe a little Berlin moment, this is a perfect fit in the Beat Machine series and you'll notice perhaps that it's a little more advanced as it's been so long since the previous two. Sure to be considered a new classic amongst fans and overall a dope and often trippy instrumental album.

Ill Bill - The Hour of Reprisal CD+DVD

Former Non Phixion standout and one of the organizers behind La Coka Nostra aggressively pushes the envelope, representing hip-hop in a manner unlike any other. Whether holding it down alongside iconic MC's such as Raekwon and B-Real, or masterminding stellar collaborations with the likes of the legendary Bad Brains and heavy metal kingpins Killswitch Engage, Ill Bill confidently swaggers the line between genres with legendary names such as DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, and DJ Lethal among others behind the boards. Also, for the first time, a bulk of the production has been propelled by the hardcore MC himself. Additionally, in order to bring these sonic textures to life, longtime Wu-Tang Clan mix engineer Carlos Bess brought his state-of-the-art boom-bap, to ensure that the menacing soundscapes would be as sharp as the undeniably crucial lyrics without exploiting the social and political topics touched on throughout the album, be it racism, the VA Tech shootings or the War in Iraq. Fans won't want to miss out! Comes with a free poster while supplies last!

He is perhaps one of the most heavily bootlegged underground rappers with hundreds of tracks and collabs floating around out there somewhere. Legendary Classics collects some of the best of the rest of those tracks with featurings from Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, Kool G Rap, Buckwild, Ayatollah, Jedi Mind Tricks, Sadat X, Akinyele, Tragedy, J-Live and more.

Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian is Guillermo Scott Herren's latest album on Warp, and is very much in keeping with the more defined sound of 2007's Preparations. In the past much of his work was branded with his signature choppy, glitchy, cut up hip hop with a sonic, yet upbeat electronica tone...and here, you can see the fine tuning of this style has found a middle ground offering well put together arrangements and explorations in sounds and ambiance, accompanied by the right touch of beats and patterns throughout.

The Keeper is the first single, thankfully on vinyl (very limited edition) and not just digital, from Bonobo's forthcoming new album (as yet untitled and due for release early next year). Featuring the incomparable vocal talents of Andreya Triana, the video for the single is already a hit on YouTube, and now the audio is being released in all its full-res magnificence. Coming on like a cross between early Massive Attack and classic soul-jazz, The Keeper is the sound of an artist completely in control of his resources, an artist with the confidence to do a little brilliantly. He coaxes a fantastic, characterful performance from Triana and makes music which is both melancholy and effortlessly uplifting.

Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass 2xLP

The heavily anticipated and long awaited fourth official studio album from Aes Rock has arrived! After four long years between Bazooka Tooth and now (despite a few EPs and an exclusive online release), much has changed in his life musically and personally, and this newest album reflects that, all encompassingly. Thematically, each song seamlessly melds into the next, exploring the nature of relationships, the struggle of adulthood and various glimpses of life. The album marks a true return to form, finding him collaborating with longtime friend and producer Blockhead as well as Def Jux staples El-P, Cage and Rob Sonic, all the while welcoming new friends Breeze Brewin (Juggaknots) and John Darnielle (Mountain Goats) into the fold. Production is a shining beam of light as well, with Aesop and friends juxtaposing earthy low-end grooves with futuristic bumps. The wait has been long, but well worth the anticipation.

Back in print! We've got restocks of the late 90's underground classic As The World Burns by The Arsonists plus the album's instrumentals! The Brooklyn group featuring the original members (Q-Unique of Rocksteady Crew, D-Stroy, Freestyle, Swel Boogie and Jise One) formed in 1993 as the Bushwick Bomb Squad and rose to acclaim with the classic single "The Session" in 1996. In 1999 they struck a deal with the indie-mostly-rock label Matador Records as one of the only hip hop groups to be signed to the label. At one point the group rose to almost eight members but were down to only three by the time their 2001 follow up Date of Birth was ready to drop. Thankfully you can now own this little piece of underground hip hop history as Q-Unique has re-acquired the rights to their best selling first album for you to either replace your original (I know I needed to) or pick it up for the first time see how these guys bring it!

When referring to the term, 'old school' in hip hop, it is more or less equivalant to the use of the term 'classic rock'. Meaning, within its respective genre, it holds the same relevance today, as it did when it was first released. And the key word here being 'classic'. With as many terms as you can try and come up with to classify the music, it refuses to be outdated, because good music will live on forever...across all genres. This album is, in the eyes, ears and hearts of many, one of the most influential albums in hip hop history.

Canibus - Melatonin Magik CD

Once one of the most respected rising stars in hip hop in the mid 90's, Canibus' rise to fame fell as quickly as it arrived. After his public beef with LL Cool J to his Gold selling Can-I-Bus produced by Wyclef, he quickly burned bridges in the industry after critics panned him while fans praised him. In 2000 he returned with 2000 BC after blaming Wyclef over the moderate success of his first album but more controversy came after Eminem turned down a request to appear on the album. It underperformed and Universal released him from his contract. He would go on to release an album once a year with C True Hollywood Stories (an alleged concept album about the music industry), Mic Club: The Curriculum and what seemed like a return to the basics with Rip the Jacker which featured production by Jedi Mind Tricks' Stoupe The Enemy of Mankind. Mind Control was released in 2005 after a hiatus and brief stint in the army following his discharge. The independent label that released the album claimed it would cover his experience in the armed forces but it instead featured songs recorded around 2001 and many of which had already been heard and bootlegged. His next album that same year Hip Hop For Sale was produced by Nottz but featured tracks that had been leaked on a mixtape almost a year before which caused tension between the two and called for other producers coming in last minute to fill in a few new tracks. Fans and critics weren't sold on it. For Whom The Beat Tolls dropped in 2007 with what little remained of his cult fan base and finally Canibus was back and has since been featured as a guest on several other albums! Melatonin Magik comes after his renewed following and features the MC rapping harder and raspier and even taking aim at Eminem with a diss track. Old habits die hard I guess. Featuring guest appearances by Bronze Nazareth, Copywrite, Blaq Poet (of Screwball), K-Solo and Psalm One.

It's finally here! Orko fans worldwide unite and rejoice! I remember hearing as far back as 2006 that it was almost going to be picked up by Ninja Tune. Unfortunately nothing came of it and the San Diego underground hip hop legend worked on several other projects while perfecting and waiting for the right time to drop Forbidden Physics including his project with Odessa Kane and the Left Handed Scientists album with Anti-Citizens. He's also appeared on many other local artists' albums holding it down for the scene here and performs at too many shows to even count. This is quite possibly Orko's best and most refined work to date, handmade and all! Orko has been actively putting San Diego hip hop on the map for almost two decades and has never sacrificed his style for anybody else's interests...when you talk about people keeping it real, this is one of the guys who actually lives up to it. Whether he's rapping fast over drum-n-bass or the hardcore, spaced-out abstract beats that he is known for...Orko wants to remind us that he is and always has been hip hop first and foremost! One love, homie. <br><br>Please note that two bonus tracks cut from the final album ("All Expendable" and "Blast Off and Destroy") are available for download at <a target="fp" href="http://orkoeloheim.bandcamp.com">orkoeloheim.bandcamp.com</a>.

Styles Free - Styles Free LP CD

Going back to 2005, emcees Verbz, Madmonk and A.Poet were brought together by friends in the local hip hop scene and have now created Styles Free. Gaining mutual respect for one another and now on the road to becoming lifelong friends, they possess different styles of rhyme patterns and thus play off of each other well in a cipher. Energetic live shows and a diverse array of topics make this yet another of the more focused and positive groups coming out of San Diego, with a mission to bring back boom-bap and stay true to the elements. Give it a shot and support local artists!

Grayskul & Maker - Graymaker CD

JFK & Onry Ozzborn, better known as Grayskul, have teamed up with indie superstar beatsmith Maker to form Graymaker! After two previous releases gave them larger exposure through Rhymesayers, the Oldominion members have stayed busy over the years touring and collaborating, including releasing last year's amazing Gigantics compilation, but never have they come so clean like this team up with Maker. The depth of his production inspires others to bring out raw emotion and artistry in their lyrics and Graymaker is just one more reason why so many people would want to get even just a taste of a beat from Maker. Featuring guest appearances by Qwazaar and Zavala.

Sleep & Zelly Rock - Combination Lock CD

A transitional record for both Sleep and Zelly Rock, produced almost entirely by Smoke of Oldominion. Blending dance hall with underground hip hop much like the recent release of Aceyalone's Lightening Strikes! It took some work to find a middle ground for the project, but the effort was well worth it as the result is a refreshing departure from your everyday indie hip hop album. Combination Locked reinvents the Northwest sound of which both Sleep and Zelly Rock helped pioneer. Limited!

Pedalay The Boss - War Journals CDR

Infinity Gauntlet and Civil War drop some hardcore beats and rhymes during these dark and gritty times in San Diego. Looking outside as the clouds from the firestorm rolled over the freeways and hung above the skyscrapers blotting out the sun, its as if it was Armageddon and this was the soundtrack! As both artists have been on a hiatus and out of town for a while, its good to have them back dropping new material. For fans of Tenshun and Stuntdouble, Orko, Skrapez and Kilowattz. 619 stand up!
