James Pants - Seven Seals LP

Having given birth to a music career and to a human child within the span of a few months, celebrated percussionist James Pants withdrew into solitude for some weeks in the year 2008. Hermetically ensuring his privacy in his remote cabin in & around Spokane, Washington, Pants spurned the noise and clatter of the globetrotting lifestyle, as he nurtured his seed in the form of beautiful baby girl Olive, and took to penning this concept album, now known as Seven Seals. For the moment, with the exception of his recent touring of Europe and China, wowing the throngs with his exhilarating live ensemble Royal Zodiac, the reclusive Pants occupies himself almost entirely with his offspring, and the disciplined study of oceanography, astronomy and gourmet Latin cooking. Vinyl release is packaged in a "tip-on" style jacket, and includes a "Land Of The Aqua Sun" Newsletter authored by James Pants himself.

Moka Only - Martian Xmas 2009 CD

Moka Only returns with his sixth edition of the Martian Xmas series. Moka feels that over the last few years of doing this annual project he has developed a certain continued vibe that is set apart from other Moka Only album releases. Martian Xmas was never intended to be a 'standard Xmas' album per se but more so an excursion into the sounds of the north American winter during the holiday period. This time around, Moka invited his good friends Bootie Brown of The Pharcyde, Sean O'Hagan of The High Llamas, Psy (The Nope / Oddities) and Nebz Supreme who all make guest appearances on the album.

Mr. Chop - For Pete's Sake 2xLP

Mr. Chop, the multi-talented producer, engineer, guitar-reared multi-instrumentalist behind a host of releases on Now-Again and Jazzman Records, couldn't have foretold that the legendary rapper MF Doom would call him "the illest to grace the boards" after tapping into his otherworldly skills as co-producer/co-writer on a series of tracks on the recently released Born Like This album on Lex Records. Nor could he have foretold that Doom's praise would lead to an offer to rework psych funk, jazz and rock covers of producer Pete Rock's greatest beats. Nor could he have called that Pete Rock's long time collaborator, upon hearing the versions of "T.R.O.Y." and "Straighten It Out" would beg to record an album with him. But here he is, standing proudly behind 17 tracks that he recorded at his Cheshire, England-based Ape Studios with the likes of The Heliocentric's Malcolm Catto, Jake Ferguson and Mike Burnham that offer up a futuristic mixture of fuzzy psychedelia, funk, jazz and musique concrete informed by years of record collecting and Hip Hop studies. His is a unique take and has lead to an album that the heads will recognize by, say, the Tom Scott sax-line Pete Rock poached for "T.R.O.Y.," or a host of other sample-based calls and response that Chop has deconstructed into their component parts and reassembled again. But his is an album that will appeal to music lovers, regardless of their musical leaning, as a master-class in fuzzy, funky grooves. Packaged in a deluxe cardboard "paste-on" jacket.

Natural Elements - 1999: 10 Year Anniversary CD

Natural Elements' debut album, one of the most talked about unreleased records from the heyday of underground Hip Hop, finally surfaces, remastered and with cuts never before circulated online or off (tracks 1, 9 & 19). Before materializing as an official group, Natural Elements were originally conceived as a group of solo artists brought together in 1993 under the tutelage of producer Charlemagne. This initial grouping included members Mr. Voodoo and L-Swift along with KA, G-Blass, Howie Smalls and the InTimidator. By 1995 the unit had morphed into a straight up group including the newly-added A-Butta. A-Butta, L-Swift and Mr. Voodoo dropped sizzling singles like "Live It Up" and "Bust Mine". 12"s, mixtapes, appearances on the "Stretch and Bobbito Show" and the like made waves and built a strong fan base. The trio's countless appearances on the NYC freestyle and mixtape circuits culminated with a record deal on the Tommy Boy Black sub-label and the release of the single "2 Tons" in 1999. And that's where the story takes a wrong turn, with issues between the group and the label, and their fantastic debut was shelved - until now. After a decade of gathering dust, Natural Elements debut full length is ready for your ears. With the original masters secured and remastered, Kings Link Recordz and Kenny Diaz proudly present all the cuts that help change the NYC underground forever on Natural Elements 1999: 10 Year Anniversary.

Souls of Mischief - Montezuma's Revenge 2xCD

This is most eagerly awaited Souls of Mischief album ever! Montezuma's Revenge was created the old-fashioned way, with the MCs, A-Plus, Phesto, Opio & Tajai, and producers, Prince Paul & Domino, in the lab together from the beginning to the end of the recording process. "We rented a house" explains Opio. "Prince Paul came out, we had no distractions, we just did music every day. "It was cool" adds Tajai. "He had concepts, and it's good to have an outside perspective - it was a great process." The result is a cohesive, creative Hip Hop album, the kind of project you'd expect from veterans like Souls of Mischief under the auspices of a genius producer like Prince Paul. Souls first encountered Prince Paul while touring with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul back in the day. But it was on a more recent tour with Handsome Boy Modeling School that the seeds of this collaboration were planted. So what exactly is Montezuma's Revenge? Tajai comments, "We recorded the album on Montezuma Street." The final product features 18 tracks of the quality Hip Hop you've come to expect from Hieroglyphics, with cover art by esteemed illustrator Steve Lopez (famous for his illustrations of Erykah Badu and others). Of course there's more to the title than the location of the recording, Tajai says "The deeper meaning is this album will make you crap yourself."

Back in 1972 the reclusive Jack Slew led a psych/rock band that released a limited (50 CDs!) album "Dust Commander." In 2005 Jack Rowlands started working on a documentary film about Jack Slew and his band. Rowlands approached Kid Koala and Dynomite D to create the soundtrack, using Slew's finished and unfinished material. The film may never happen, but the music meanwhile has taken on a life of its own, becoming a live show with six turntables and the addition of drums, bass, keys and guitars played by the ex-Wolfmother rhythm section and production by Mario C (best known for his work with the Beastie Boys).

Various Artists - Forge Your Own Chains LP

This compilation introduces a new direction for Now-Again Records and its owner, Stones Throw Records GM, A&R and producer Egon. With the same detailed, no-stone-unturned approach he used for Deep Funk (The Funky 16 Corners, Cold Heat), he tackles beat-heavy global psychedelia with Forge Your Own Chains. "Those of us birthed into record collecting by the Hip Hop midwife revered Jimi Hendrix as well as James Brown. We searched for albums by Mulatu Astatke and Power of Zeus with the same fervor," Egon writes in his introduction to the comp. Forge Your Own Chains showcases music from all corners of the world: Colombia, Nigeria, Sweden, South Korea, Thailand and Iran. The focus - in keeping with Now-Again's tradition - is on melody, driving rhythms and accessibility. Not one song is included on this compilation because it is from a "rare" album. Certainly, many of these songs do spring from albums that exchange hands for many thousands of dollars and many of these songs have never seen reissue. But these songs are all beautiful in their own right and work to form a coherent album. Psychedelic records, long the mainstay of older, grizzled collectors and seemingly quaint, are, in the hands of Egon and those of his generation, giving up new ghosts. And, with comps like Forge Your Own Chains, inspiring new investigations into our not so distant (and still very much alive) musical past.
