1. Zo & Phonte (Little Bro) - Zo & Tigallo Love The 80s CD

Phonte from Little Brother has proved himself to be one of the most versatile artists in hip hop, performing capably as an emcee, a singer, and to those who've witnessed his live performances or heard his podcasts, know he's something of a comedian. Even still, while the cover art makes it look like a joke or a cover shoot for Gnarls Barkley, the slick production of Zo coupled with Phonte's vocal abilities make this a seriously impressive little EP covering some of the artists' favorite songs from the 80s. With only 2500 pressed worldwide (each copy is individually numbered) and remixes from Nicolay and Trackacademicks, fans won't want to miss out!

2. Vordul Mega (Cannibal Ox) - Megagraphitti CD

As many moved on and gave up hope that there would ever be another full-length Cannibal Ox album, we've still been blessed with the fact that despite claims of a break-up and even rumors of a reunion, both Vordul Mega and Vast Aire have also managed to move on with their fair share of contributions and hit-or-miss solo and side-project releases over the years that followed. I'm not the first person who probably expressed a little disappointment over the release of Mega's 2004 album Revolution of Young Havocs, but I am here to be the first to tell you that Megagraphitti is redemption! It was once reported that one of the reasons for Vordul's scarce appearances in hip hop were due to his battle with clinical depression. But Vordul's head and heart seem to be in the right place now...even showing up for guest spots on Vast Aire's latest projects including Mighty Joseph with Karniege and Deuces Wild. The next logical step was to emerge from the shadows and drop his own Megagraphitti. Deeply personal but never letting you get too close, there are plenty of battle-proof tracks and heavy production from El-P, Sid Roams, and Bronze Nazareth to name a few. Also guest appearances by Billy Woods of SuperChron Flight Brothers, Karniege, Tommy Gunn (of Monsta Island Czars) and of course Vast Aire.

3. GZA - Pro Tools CD

Quite possibly one of the better if not best Wu related releases this decade! There have been a lot of good, a few okay and others not so hot, but Pro Tools (which is referring to his mic skills) is definitely at the front of the pack! Always a fan favorite and one of the strongest members of the Clan, GZA drops everything on us all at once, deep metaphorical jewels, storytelling epics, morality tales, and the one creating the most buzz, the 50 Cent dis track! But that's nothing compared to the rest of the album and is really showing GZA just getting it off his chest, because Fiddy is yesterday's news, and there is plenty more out there wrong with the mainstream than just him these days. If there's one thing we can depend on, it's the belief that because Wu-Tang's fan base is world wide the message is always left with the people to spread the word. Their name still reaches the masses and the fire they've sparked in hip hop will never be extinguished. Featuring production by The RZA, Bronze Nazareth, Mathematics, Black Milk (Whuut!), Dreddy Krueger, and True Master to name just a few, as well as featuring RZA, Masta Killa and more!

4. Elzhi - The Preface CD

One movement in hip hop over the last few years that has shown no signs of slowing down is that of the music coming out of Detroit! Elzhi of Slum Village offers up his official full-length solo album The Preface after the success of the now very hard to find double disc mixtape Witness My Growth, which chronicled the talented artists career with self selected tracks and exclusives from 1997 to 2004! Featuring production handled almost entirely by Motor City native (and now pretty much a superproducer) Black Milk with guest appearances by T3, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Royce Da 5'9" and more!

5. Opio - Vulture's Wisdom vol. 1 CD+DVD

Opio and the producing talents of Architect combine for the limited CD plus DVD edition of Vulture's Wisdom Volume 1, with Volume 2 expected for a later release (probably next year)! Or at least when Opio finds time to on his busy tour schedule to give us another proper release... and that's exactly what this is! Coming from one of the strongest lyricists in the Hiero camp and set to Architect's beats, helped make this quite a trip back for me personally, capturing some of the old Souls of Mischief days, just as Del's Eleventh Hour brought me even further back to I Wish My Brother George Was Here. This is a strong year for Hiero and further solidifies their niche in hip hop, forever here to stay. By the way...we've been bumping this every day at the shop! The dvd portion of this release features videos for almost every track plus interludes.

6. The Grouch - Show You The World CD

"Show You The World" is the long-awaited new album from The Grouch, to be released April 2008, his first full-length solo album since Crusader for Justice in 2002. The new album is 15 tracks deep with guest appearances from Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Tone!), MURS as well as Mike Marshall (Timex Social Club), Abstract Rude, Marty James (One Block Radius) and fellow Living Legends members Bicasso and Scarub! Don't know about you, but I can't wait!!

7. Immortal Technique - The 3rd World CD

The self-proclaimed hip hop revolutionist returns for an all-new album in collaboration with DJ Green Lantern on production along with Bronze Nazareth, Buckwild, Sick Jacken to name a few, and featuring guest appearances by Pharoahe Monch, Chino XL, Poison Pen, Psycho Realm and more! Fans have waited for quite some time for the follow up to Revolutionary Volumes 1 and 2, and there are still rumors out there circulating about The Middle Passage dropping later this year or perhaps early in '09! Hardcore and political, Immortal Technique has been heavily involved in trying to get people to get out there and vote this year, and with his fan base it's possible people will finally take his message seriously and take
responsibility.

8. People Under The Stairs - The Om Years 2xCD

Excellent collection of PUTS classics and even a second disc of B-sides, remixes, instrumentals and joints that appeared on other releases! One thing that Double K and Thes One have shown us over the years is that hip hop is still fun no matter what's going on outside of the underground. I haven't disliked a single release from the group and this "best of" collection seriously is the very best! A great introduction to the group if you've been living under a rock and just a great release overall - OM really nailed it here!

9. Factor - The Chandelier CD

On Fake Four Records, Canadian producer Factor has made a name for himself over the better half of the last ten years providing beats for major underground players including members of the Living Legends, Project Blowed and the Shapeshifters as well as home-country heroes the Swollen Members! Building this reputation allowed him to create his own label (Sideroad Records) which has become a haven for underground Canadian artists. With Factor at the helm of almost every release, this makes him one of the hardest working producers out there. The Chandelier marks perhaps some of Factor's best work to date and features appearances by Ceschi Ramos (Toca, Anonymous Inc.), Awol One, Kirby Dominant, Moka Only, Josh Martinez, hip hop legend Sadat X and more! Again excellent production and a great mix of emcees contributing make this one of the most solid releases of the year!

10. Maleko - Yadadaloha CD

Just months after the Breathing Room was released, Maleko is back with your Bay Area Summer fix, and probably one of the funniest releases of the year! Honestly this one had us laughing out loud and we don't get enough of 'em that we can take seriously at the same time, so when taken with a grain of salt you'll get lost in the comedic plots of songs like "86 T-Bird" and "M.I.L.F." which display the emcee's sharp sense of humor and storytelling abilities paired with equal parts tongue-in-cheek beats. I feel like this is the triumphant proof to the fact that the hyphy movement has pretty much died down and Bay Area music hip hop is back to one category, that 'ole slump-shit, and longtime friends and collaborators have joined the ride on Yadadaloha including Optimus Rhymes, Z-man, Joe Dub, Cosmic and more!

11. Living Legends - The Gathering CD EP

The EP is 7 songs deep, and each of the Living Legends is on EVERY SINGLE SONG! The Gathering is powered by an anthem for peace, which will be sure to speak to everybody, but don't think that the LL's forget to have a good time! The album is balanced with bangers to move the crowd and enough dope verses to keep the all the heads satisfied.

12. Doomtree - Doomtree CD

The first official full-length debut album from the ENTIRE Doomtree collective! That means everybody, so if you're not familiar, the Minneapolis group is composed of MC/Producer P.O.S., MC/Producer Cecil Otter, emcees Dessa, Mike Mictlan and Sims, as well as producer Lazerbeak, DJ/Producer Marshal Larada, DJ/Producer Paper Tiger and DJ/Producer Turbo Nemesis. Heavy beats, lengthy tracks to accommodate every member, and progressive. At one point it even parodies commercial rap, but the message and music is strong and does not come off as a joke, in fact I have no complaints and previously I wasn't that big of a fan of Doomtree while most of my friends had me pegged as one, and I think now I can officially call myself one. It's a damn good album and there is something about it that reaches out to the MTV drones and attempts to pull them in, like poppin' the red pill in The Matrix, maybe this along with earlier releases this year like Atmosphere is enough to finally get people listening. As hip hop fans, we already know what's missing...more of us, and any group that manages to breach the surface and win over new fans to the cause is okay our book. Word!

Eight years since its announcement and over three years in the actual making, Hip Hop icon Del The Funky Homosapien finally releases Eleventh Hour! Founder of the mighty Hieroglyphics crew and the alternative choice MC for legions of loyal fans around the world, Del and Hiero have helped shape the genre into new molds over the years, as they are always on the front lines of innovation.
26. Ras Kass - Institutionalized vol. 2 CD

One of the most critically acclaimed West Coast emcees of all time, Ras Kass is renowned for his complex lyricism, sharp battle rhymes and witty punchlines. 1996's debut Soul On Ice established Ras as one of the front-runners of the post West Coast gangsta rap movement pioneered by seminal acts such as N.W.A. and nationally popularized by modern day icons Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and more. Marrying a hardcore street sensibility with his signature witty wordplay, Ras built a loyal underground core with subsequent albums including 1998's Rasassination featuring guest appearances by Dr. Dre, Xzibit, Twista and The RZA as well as multiple mixtape releases. Currently serving time, Ras Kass' ambition in the face of adversity is on full display with the bow of Institutionalized Vol. II. Sure to satisfy Ras' loyal constituency and beyond, Vol. 2 is a testament to both Ras' resilience and the raw skill that underlies his longevity within the ever-changing hip-hop landscape.
