LP = LongPlayer

EP i think stands for Extended Player, i'm not sure about Player but the E stands for Extended.

According to the All Music Guide...

LP is used as an abbreviation for long-playing disc or long-playing record.

EP is an abbreviation for "extended play." These vinyl discs have a short history but had a gainful market. These releases were "cut" on the standard 45rpm (revolutions per minute) discs but the charted release was not the version played by radio jocks. Standard pop-radio releases last about three and a half minutes but the band's version, sometimes even the full stage version, "extends" from seven to twelve minutes.

Now when people talk about EPs they usually mean a album with about 4-8 songs on it. I f it has more it's usually called an LP.
