They've also done a full redesign, making the magazine slightly larger 8x10.5 inches -- and have embraced a new paper stock. Wax Poetics will look a bit different on the newsstand, with a new mark making its debut in place of the old logo, but the magazine will continue to be a collectible objet d'art, something to be saved on your shelf as a musical reference manual, not recycled like other mags. NEW RELEASES:
El Michels Affair - Run Fay Run 7" http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21703 Back in stock! Truth & Soul is proud to present another stellar set of covers from El Michels Affair. This time EMA have paid tribute to one of the greatest American composers of the 20th century, Isaac Hayes, a.k.a The Black Moses. Side A is re-interpolation of Run Fay Run, the chase theme from Isaac Hayes soundtrack Tough Guys. Instead of just covering it outright, EMA put an afro beat spin on the song by changing the arrangement, speeding it up considerably, adding percussion and Fela-esque horns. This is a DJ sureshot. The flip side, Hung Up On My Baby, is also from the Tough Guys soundtrack. Most people recognize the song from its super-catchy guitar melody that gets associated with the Geto Boys song, "My Mind is Playing Tricks On Me". EMA took only the guitar melody and turned the rest of the backing music into a rocksteady/dub groove. GB - 7 In 24 / Dogon 12" http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21729 Back out West for the first 12" of 12 in 2012, the second outing on the label from LA's GB (Gifted & Blessed). Following on from his recent Provider release this is another great showcase of his ever- developing styles. 2 tracks here with "7 in 24" a dense 808 led up- tempo workout with a hypnotic groove while on the flip "Dogon" is a techno-electro hybrid with a nod to the pre-millennium Motor City sound. The rest of it is All City standard – shrinkwrapped full colour one off art – this time from Brightons Roid (MSK) – and with a download code for the MP3's. Georgia A. Muldrow/Madlib - Seeds (w/download card) 7" http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21658 Seeds not only marks Georgia's first album as a vocalist on an outside producers instrumentation, it also marks the first full length project Madlib will have produced exclusively for a female vocalist. The first single off the upcoming project and the A Side of this limited edition 7" is "Seeds", a track full of eclectic, rhythmic soul. "Seeds" asks the people of the world to elevate their consciousness and take responsibility for the future of our children and the planet. The B Side features "Husfriend," an ode to the beauty of commitment to another person. "Not handling production and focusing strictly on the lyrics and vocals was a very different experience for me. It was as if I walked into someone else's world and built a hut. But I'm very proud of the hut we built and am excited about the release." Georgia Anne Muldrow Makestapes / Birdlikebats - split 7" http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21820 Brand new material from downtempo beat master Makestapes on this split 7" with Birdlikebats. Mike Gao / Daisuke Tanabe - Finest Ego: Faces vol. 2 12" EP http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21673 The second edition of Project Mooncircle's "Faces" producer series features works by two extraordinary producers Daisuke Tanabe and Mike Gao. Mike Gao is a music technology researcher, holds a Masters degree in Music Technology at Stanford and is pursuing his PhD in Electrical Engineering at UCSD. After a career as an underground Hip Hop and Scratch DJ based in Chicago (working with such names as Qwel, Mestizo and Luckyiam) he began partaking and winning in numerous beat battles, Low End Theory being the most prominent, which makes him one of the best kept secrets in the Los Angeles beat scene. He released music on labels such as All City with Tokimonsta, Galapagos4, Project: Mooncircle and many more. Tokyo resident Daisuke Tanabe, a former art student who also lived in London for a while, developed from his techno/breakbeat background into a very unique sound between Hip Hop, Electronica, Folk and Jazz. He released music on labels such as Ninja Tune, BBE, Project: Mooncircle and Brownswood Recordings, performed with Zero DB and remixed artists like Elan Mehler and Aaron Jerome. Mr. Complex - Swiss Chocolate Cake +USB LP http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21708 Limited Edition! Includes USB flash drive with the entire album tracks + digital bonus tracks and videos. Swiss Chocolate Cake, recorded in Basel Switzerland is Mr. Complex's new full length release on Sub-Bombin Records. Not counting his group affiliation on the Polyrhythm Addicts release a few years back, this marks the veteran underground NY emcee's first solo since 2005. Telemachus - The Sheltering Sky 12" http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21626 Alter-ego of London based producer Chemo. Side A features vocals by Jhest over a brooding slice of cinematic hip hop, epic soundtrack for his double-edged wordplay. Includes vibe-heavy remix from the prolific Paul White who adds skittering beats & atmospheric soundscapes. yU (Diamond District) - The Earn (green vinyl) 2LP http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=21563 Now on vinyl! yU first gained acclaim as 1/3 of the Washington DC group Diamond District along with Oddisee and XO. Then he continued to garner success with his solo debut Before Taxes which was named to the Best of 2010 List by HipHopDX, Al Lindstrom, and Above Ground Mag.. yU then sharpened his skills through performances on a European tour and appearances at CMJ, SXSW, A3C, and the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. yU is back with his sophomore project The Earn a progression that is as fluid, lyrical, and thought provoking as his critically acclaimed debut. His new album, The Earn, is a timely meditation on the struggle to advance, set afire by yU's potent wordplay.
