Jazz lovers......

If you haven't already check out The Detroit Expieremnet and the Philadelphia Exp. as well.

Ropeadope releases. Never half steppin, on point as always.

Check it out. The Detroit is a little more uptempo, theres a SICK Clavinet player featured on a few tracks that gave me butterflies in my stomach, for real.

The Philly is a little more chamber-ish... downtempo. Questlove is the drummer.

Peep it out. Ropeadope.com

haven't checked the Philly Experiment, but the Detroit Ex is pretty good. Good variety, but some sections of it make me forget i'm listening to a cd, and i start thinking the radio's on some elevator music station.. then i realize "oh, it's the cd." but yeah, dope shit considering it was one of those "blind" buys. hey, i liked the cover.

Theres really only one or two elvator-ish, whispy tracks on there though (i do not like that stuff at all).... the rest is fresh. IMO.

Check the Philly.

I know.... it's more or less just warmth. But yeah... thats one thing i was a little irked about. On certain songs it's like basically a 5 minute breakdown or something, but that shit is different and i like it.

Regardless i recommend both.

do you know of any releases that are similar to this, but have more of a jazz and hip hop feel, rather than the kinda breakbeat techno-ish stuff. i'm lookin for somethin that has a lot of saxaphone, some piano, and other instruments over a hip hop style beat. any ideas?

Um... this shit doesn't have a "techno" feel whatsoever. What gave you that idea? It's all live instrumentation (think Jazzmatazz......)..........

Try Mushroom Jazz.... or any Blue Note compilations if your looking for instrumentation over a "hiphop style" beat. Jazz Chillout (blue note) is a good start.

i knew you were going to say that. i don't know how to explain it, but the drums just don't sound right. by techo-ish sound, i meant they reminded me of it, not that they sounded totally like it.

but no, the drums on the philly project are not live, i know that much.

The Detroit Experiment doesn't sound like techno at all. If techno and jazz were on opposite ends of a musical spectrum, this lp would definitely lie somewhere on the jazz side. there's a few electronic effects and a couple uptempo tracks, but that's it. The producer is known as a techno dj/producer, but this is not techno at all. not even a close relative. I think half of the drums are live.. some of them were added later in the mix.
I'd suggest Naked Music NYC's first lp "What's on Your Mind?" but that's mainly vocal tracks. Others have suggested K&D, MM&W, and Jazzanova. I dunno. I guess you could check for anything on the Acid Jazz, Mo'Wax, Luv N Haight or Giant Steps labels, but a lot of this stuff is real real boring... or very good for taking stoned naps to.
