Scratchin Today

Is seems today or in the last 4 or 5 years, Turntablists or DJs out there have been most concerned with how

fast

they can cut it up. To them scratching really fast is the equivalent of a dope scratcher/turntablist. It's like a Bboy that breaks really fast and is only into tricks and has no regard to the music. I think young DJ's , kids for example, will always have that excuse for doing it, because they look at DJing, bboying, whatever, and see it only for the spectacular feats that come out of it, and doing anything at a young age you always want the fun and exciting thing that comes out of it. For those of you older heads, I don't think you have an excuse. Go back to the basics, like learning rhythem. Practice your baby cuts, stabs, and transform cuts (Cuts that I rarely see any DJ do today). Get funky with it. Don't think of Cutting as Well if I can do perfect ORBITS , Crabs, and Flares perfectly I'll be an ill DJ. Think of it as, Well if I can cut on beat, be funky, and have a lot of STYLE, then I can be dope. I'm not cutting down DJs/Turntablists that do orbits, crabs, or any new school techniques, I'm just saying don't let that be your entire vocabulary when cutting. To be honest, most of your patterns and combinations are starting to sound the same... Go against the grain, and think outside the box. Leave the legends like Q-bert and D-styles alone, and stop biting their patterns and rhythms. How come no one ever trys to bite CASH MONEY?? or DJ ALADDIN?? Grandmaster FLASH?? Steve D?? man those cats had style and flavor. haha is it a black THING??Just kidding

Hears also some TURNTABLE ETTIQUETTE for you scratch happy idiots.

1. Don't cut during someone elses SET, unless you get permission from that person. That's fuckin' wack, plus the audience doesn't want to hear scratchin' all the time!

2. Don't fuckin' scratch over the verses of the songs, c'mon

3. DJing for a bboy battle doesn't mean doing your DMC routine..Just play music, you're not the center of attention, the bboys are. That includes doubling up snares and kicks that will probably throw off the dancers, and scratching "awww" during the battle.

i agree with you but i dont think technical scratches are always "unfunky". d-styles, toadstyles and alot of others pushing the technical envelope are some of the funkiest scratchers around. i think its a common practice for new turntablists to work on speed and specific techniques until they have an adequate enough aresonal to start expressing themselves the way the want to sound. but youre right, alot of people forget the basics because they think 300 click orbits sound more impressive then dope chirp/baby patterns.

"record management" is my favorite.

I think being able to do super clean/on time cuts at half time is way more impressive than just rocking out all crazy.

it's all about super control with a healthy arangement of speeds and sounds.
