I am just getting into raggae (beyond Bob Marley) and dance hall. List some sick tracks or artists to look out for.

Reggae is the shit dude

bob marley is the most commonly known reggae artist for sure and thats cool that ur branchin out but dont ever forget how dope bob really is. Check Peter Tosh(an original wailer), Isreal Vibration, Jimmy Cliff, Barry Levington, Black Uruhu, Steel Pulse, The Skatilites, Roots Radic. Im not into dancehall all that much but i do know judge dread. not my style but still pretty dope. Just remember that reggae is a wide genre...there are many different types of reggae. my favs are roots(bob, isreal vibration) and dub(bill laswell, lee 'scratch' perry and the upsetters). just try a bucha different stuff, and figure what u like cuz there are millions of reggae artists from the 60s til today...peace

Yeah, Peter Tosh would have to be my favorite over Bob Marley - don't get me wrong, Marley's awesome, but that's all you ever hear.
I also really like Lee Scratch Perry and Augustus Pablo. Charlie Chaplin has some good stuff and some of Eek A Mouse I like. Yellow Man.
I don't know any dancehall, but whenever I hear it I like it. There's a reggae show on one of Seattle's stations every Saturday morning - it's cool to wake up and turn that on. They broadcast over the internet - and even archive their shows I think - it's www.kexp.org. The show is called Positive Vibration and it's on from 9 or 10 til noon PST - check it out if you can, you'll hear a whole lotta good stuff, everything from roots to dancehall.

Reggae is a gigantic genre with many sub genres and styles.

Here are a few artists I really like from each style:

Rocksteady/early reggae: John Holt, Ken Boothe, any Sir Coxsone productions

Dub: King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, King Jammy aka Prince Jammy, Scientist, Jah Shaka, Joe Gibbs, Prince Far-I & The Arabs

Roots: Early Aswad, Johnny Clarke, Jacob Miller, Hugh Mundell, Max Romeo, Lee Scratch Perry, Congos

80s Dancehall: Eek-a-Mouse, Barrington Levy, Junior Reid, Frankie Paul

90s Dancehall: Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Sean Paul, Mr. Vegas, Ninja Man

Neo Roots: Bushman, Luciano, Garnett Silk, Jah Cure, Ras Shiloh

also check out Jackie Mittoo, he's got some groovey shit. that's enough for now.!

here are some good sites for researching reggae:

some may ask why I left out popular artists such as Capleton, Anthony B, Sizzla and so on. They're part of the new concious dancehall movement of mostly bobo dreads. I don't really feel the lyrics but their production is some of the best.

Raggae is a good term nontheless. When a chick's PMSing i think the best deal is to hit the ganj and listen to some reggae.

And yes, I am listing up some of these reggae artists myself.
