UHB 3 wake up show question???
On track number 3 it sounds like a snippet from the Wake Up Show with Mystik Journeymen in the studio. In the begining it sounds like things are going good, PSC n Sunspot are talkin about different shows their gonna do and what not. Then PSC gives a shout out to someone named "BILLY JAM" for putting on that underground scene. And all of sudden Sway just starts HATING? on whoever this BILLY JAM dude is and the Mystik J's for giving him a shout out? Does anyone know the story on this?

Billy Jam is a hiphop writer.
this might answer your question- HHC: Can you tell us a few words about the magazine you used to run. Why did it stop? Billy Jam: That was in the mid nineties when I had already written for many publications about hip hop including the Source, Vibe, XXL, San Francisco Chronicle, etc. The magazine was called "No Joke" (later renamed Strivin) and it was put together by former Hip Hop Slam member Doxx. It was overseen by Hip Hop Slam. What made it unique was that it was exclusively about Bay Area hip hop/rap. And even though it only had a small circulation of about 500 copies per issue, it had an impact and was often controversial. (for example: the time I wrote an open letter to Bay Area commercial radio giant KMEL demanding that they "cease and desist" falsely using the term "hip hop" to describe their format.....this resulted in me being banned from the radio station and artists who mentioned my name also been banned.) |

anyone seen the documentary movie Scratch. Billy Jam is in it talking about hip-hop, dude goes way back. He seemed to be everywhere in early hip-hop. It's true about the magazine.
I don't think that clip came from the wake-up show, In the beginning it talks about houston or something. i don't think it was sway either. anyway hopefully there are some clues to help unravel the mystery.

ya that was sway and it was the wake up show...
when they mention houston, theyre just promoting a show... and also MURS(i strongly believe) is in the background saying "battle rap that fool" (im not sure who thats directed to) ya, back in the day the legends had beef with the wake up show... on that same album you can hear them talk shit about "106"(the call number of KMEL- the station that runs wake up show)

"fools is slimy like 106"-sunspot
kmel and sway were assimilated into the industry and billy jam would only really focus on the underground bay area scene and look down upon mainstream and known rappers leaving sway but hurt.

Hey, this is a old ass thread, but I just stumbled across it.
I'm Doxx, the one who did No Joke newsletter and Strivin' magazine. Me and Billy were real pleased with ourselves after printing that letter. I remember when that whole incident with Mystik Journeymen and Sway at KMEL happened and it tripped me out that something in my little magazine could get people at a powerhouse station so riled up. Sway was a little salty. I ran into and introduced myself to Chuy Gomez (another KMEL dj) shortly after the issue came out with Billy's "cease and desist" letter so we could chop it up and he told me that he agreed with Billy's letter for the most part, but as a DJ there wasn't much he could do. Anyway, if anyone would like to read the letter that Billy wrote, I recently started a Bay Area blog with the same name as my old magazine (Strivin') and posted up that letter. Here's the address: STRIVIN' (the letter to KMEL is in the "August 2005" link) |
