You know, Electric(Company), The Strange Fruit Project, The Procussions...

Who's down with this crap and who hates it?

I personally can't stand it. Yeah, the melodies and production are on point, but the rap seems fake and too lighthearted-not real. Actually, I like The Procussions, but it seems everyone's doin it nowadays.

i dig a lot of the production by electric company and strange fruit project, its all on that mellow tip that i can just vibe to. but i do agree that their delivery and lyrics can be a little stale for some people.

stop being so negative on the positive rap, negative1.

Yeah, the beats are on point and definitely dope, but I can't put my finger on it. It's just something about the raps, they don't seem genuine...I don't know. btw I just ordered "Levitation" 12" by Electric from sandboxautomatic.

There's even a hint of this positivity rap in some Iomos Marad stuff, and even some of Diverse's stuff, and I have both of these people's singles.

iomas marad is tight. i think that dude can flow his ass off. i saw him in long beach a couple months ago, and he was flowing while playing the drums. he's definitely got skills.

I don't understand this at all- how are any of those artists related to 9/11?

The Electric LP is dope btw, it's anything but fake.

Iomos Marad is dope, but I've heard hints of positivity rap in a few spots.

These artists are tied to 9/11 because it's this whole media and public backlash to the negativity in the world. The negativity that produced the 9/11 attacks. Notice, you never heard of these groups until AFTER 9/11 happened. Hence the labeling "9/11 by-product rap." It's this whole thinking that we need some positive rap or something. I mean, I'm all down for some positive rap, but when it's a group you've never heard of up until now when the world is on edge, it just seems to prefabricated. Like it was all premeditated. Like, it seems their thinking is, "Hey, everyone's down in the dumps right now cuz of this terrorist thing, so let's put out some psuedo-positive rap." Almost like it's too easy to do positive rap right now, cuz you would think the majority of people nowadays want positivity, so you would think everyone would eat it up. I'm just saying, do some positive rap when everything is ok, when President Clinton is in office. I don't know, maybe I'm just looking for excuses to hate on these groups, but I can see it.

I can't believe nobody feels me on this, hahahaha.

Naw man, that style ain't nothin new. If anything, there has been a total absence of rap addressing 9/11 and the current political situation. I think if artists really wanted to come at us from that angle they'd be more direct about it. J Live, Non Phixion, and CunninLynguists are the only people I can think of off the top of the dome that have addressed issues like that. "Feel good" rap has been around since long before '01, and hopefully it's not going away anytime soon. My taste in hip hop has mellowed as I've gotten older so I really dig that kinda shit...

Oh, I'm 25 and I feel you on the mellower stuff, for real.
I wasn't talking about direct associations to the 9/11 topic, I was just talking about pie-in-the-sky positivity. But anyways...

if you really listen to the lyrics by some of these positive rappers you're hating on, they do have political messages in the content of their lyrics. the lyrics may not be as in your face as paris or immortal technique, but they do spit the occasional progressive politics.

i wouldn't agree with this.....i would probably think of these groups as more of a taking it back to when rap wasn't so serious kind of thing......like i always tell people at the shop....strange fruit is sort of like a more positive/conscious slum village sort of group..but with waaaay better lyrics...i don't think it's fake at all

sometimes we need groups like this to dispel all the heavy topics / battle raps / whiny rappers that seem to dominate this genre....

9/11 by-product rap? haha, a new subgenre?

if you think 9/11 changed anything but the regime in iraq you got
something coming to you.

Ok, since I've successfully confused everyone here, including myself on this topic, let me rephrase my original question or post.

Since 9/11 occurred, do you see more "positive" rap in the world today? And if so, do you think it's too premeditated and not "real?"

I do.

And no, I'm not talking about political rap or activist rap, I'm just talking simply positive, happy rap, that's all. It ain't meant to be dissected and analyzed in any way, and wasn't meant to be in the first place(Mike Castillo);)

lif-home of the brave off emergency rations and a new track off the perceptionist album

immortal- pretty much the entire revolutionary vol 2 album is a political statement. even the artwork.

OK. Yeah, Memorial Day is the Percepsionists track you're talking about.

Yeah, Immortal makes plenty of references to it, just was wondering if there was one song in particular.

You could say that the new Sabac is a political statement too.
