with the advent of new technology...major labels have had to lower prices. i think paying 17 is way too much for a cd. brother ali's new ep is 13.00...do you think this is to high or ok because we are supporing underground

17 is a lot of a cd but not for a good cd.. to me it's worthwhile. my visionaries cd was almost 17 and it was worth so yeah it all depends. 13 isn't too bad.

$13 for two CDs: the new "Champion" CD and the bonus "Rites of Passage" CD. For those who order before they run out.

There's a lot more to prices than most people think. It's not like artists always get the whole $17. Other people have to get paid too, even in the underground. It just depends on the situation.

it all depends on various factors.

quality of sound - mixdowns at studios with better equipment, costs more, as well as getting something mastered at a quality mastering studio.

packaging and presentation - some artists have the all around package that has time and artistic quality put into the presentation, thus, the visual art as well as the packaging drives the price up some.

independant distribution - it depends what level your talking about "indie distro," of course, if someone is selling it literally out of the box, then there is no "middleman" price hike. But when cats utilize an distribution company such as Sony/Red Distribution or Caroline, you have to factor in the distribution companies percentage mark up, as well as the promotion, price and positioning prices to get your favorite underground artists seen and sold at the more major chains such as Tower, Best Buy, and so-on. Remember, when you buy the Living Legends album for $9.99, the group priced these CD's in order to promote the album, and generate initial sales, but the profit margin is very slim when all things are considered. Major labels bump down prices just to get numbers sold registered, in hopes that it will promote their artists, (who see a heck of alot less than the indie groups).

Alot of people complain of not being able to find certain records, or others just burn copies of the CD and that's that....ultimately, this is going to mean either your favorite artists will eventually have to quit making music, and focus on their day jobs because NO ONE WANTS TO SUPPORT AND BUY THEIR MUSIC - or
artists will spend less money vb, with little effort put into the packaging and artwork, to keep the cost down, and the fact that no-one buys the official release anyway.

Whatever it be, I personally will buy music that is fairly priced, and appreciate the full package, and quality of sound and art.
Support good music, it really does help the self-sufficient artists.
