dope festival. drove hundreds of miles. drank brews, and witnessed some great musical performances.
highlights of my saturday experience:
radiohead
black keys
junior senior
living legends
mf doom
the rapture
beck
Schedule of Events:
arrived at 4, caught "at the helm" blastin from the main stage, 101 degreez, scurried over to the Beck tent, caught an acoustic song or two, I was stuck in the back with the hot sun and sweaty people, made my way to Junior Senior. surprisingly funky british folks, caught "move your feet" at the end of their set.
bought beer, wandered, caught the Black Keys - midwest blues rock duo - they sounded like a four-some < maybe my favorite act of the day.
Drank more beer, soaked in some of The Rapture, mad talented rockers, not me favorite, but respectable.
caught a bit of the Pixies. Many people walked out of the festival claiming the pixies put on the best show of the day. I wouldn't know, i was drinking beer.
Soon the sound of some Radiohead synths reverberated throughout the campgrounds. rolled over to the huge mass of people gathered round the main stage. it's difficult to be disappointed by radiohead. their songs just hit straight to the soul. Meanwhile huge basslines are pounding from the E&A show just 300 yards from the Radiohead performance. i'm stickin through radiohead though. mad folks are sighing at the massive bass boosts comin across while radiohead is tryin to play their mellow shit.
soon, a lull in the distant hip hop. radiohead rocks, and then a familiar hip hop chorus, "Night Prowler." too obvious, torn between the acts. after a stoned minute of deliberation, i make my way toward the hip hop act. catch some acquaintances, move forward, and yeah.....that was the official leading up to my hip hop show of the night.
legends tore shit, grabbed the spotlight, maybe i'm biased, but i've gotten past the initial challenge of appreciating their music, now i'm just a big fan.
Kool keith came up, disappointed. Until his last song, "living astro."....left da stage."
{brief hip hop interlude}
caught ten minutes of phantom planet's set...ran a couple football fields back to "the hip hop stage".
MF rolled up, shiny face mask gleaming. rocked the spot for about 30 minutes. I gained a respect for his incredible lyrical abilities. decided he should make an album with Gift of Gab and the roots' live band.
Dope Festival, goin back next year regardless of the lineup.
Pa-pace.
