...yeah that's right, and i've seen a few shows in my 19 years on this orb.

the Dave Holland Quintet rocked Ann Arbor about 7 hours ago. They brought what initially seemed a somewhat traditional style to the table and then pulled the most ridiculous, unconventional spice i've ever wittnessed on the live jazz spectrum. The drummer tore thousands of new assholes amongst the crowd with his maniacle speed drumming, the trombonist (eubanks) spoke fluid and emotional language from his instrument, and holland held it all down with the wisdom and precision of a true franchise bassist.

I felt like i was wittnessing a late sixties miles davis quintet (minus the trumpet) that had just listened to a radiohead album....yeah, something like that.

If you're a jazz fan, check these cats

yeah i believe that show's coming through my town soon, i had planned on trying to hit it up but i'm not sure if i have any money. jimmy smith rolls through often, he's due soon. and wayne shorter as well. i'd like to see em all but it's tough. i wanna get more into the live jazz scene. i have thousands of albums but i have only been to maybe 4 actualy concerts and a handful of monday night local sit-in sessions at a bar downtown. i'd like to see holland or jimmy smith or wayne shorter live in person. last i saw was i think kenny garrett, and before that mark murphy with tom harrell, and somebody else before that, can't remember. sorry i'm babbling. big up jazz music.

hell yeah, i'd be down to see any of those artists, especially wayne shorter. Even more, I'd be down to hit up Bonnaroo this summer. Check the line up at www.bonnaroo.com : James Brown, Medeski, the Roots, Kid Koala, Antibalas, and RJD2. that doesn't include the hundreds of jambands, but that line up sounds awfully tantalizing.

I've been dying to see James Brown, but i wonder, does he still bring the funk?

yeah that sounds cool (james brown, mmw, etc), but i'm not really too into going to jazz type shows and seeing hip hop there. i usually go to jazz shows to escape the hip hop scene. i like to hang out around a bunch of older heads who are actually pretty hip but you wouldn't be able to tell. that's appealing to me. i like to sit near the stage and just listen. and watch. there's no rediculous hip hop antics, no competitions for attention or fake ass attitudes being thrown around, it's just music, and music that i love far more than hip hop. so idunno, but that soudns cool.

anthony - i would've liked to have been alive for some of those holmes/mcgriff sessions! groove merchant 'til i die! haha.

peace all.

now I wanna have a discussion about this! Who are your favorites? I'm a new jack to all this so I'm still discovering dope stuff daily. I'd have to say these are my favorite LPs by organ players I've heard thus far...

Rueben Wilson - "The Sweet Life"
this never fails to get me up and movin. I swear I start dancin in my room everytime "Inner City Blues" comes on.

Lonnie Smith - "Live In Club Mozambique"
Lonnie grooves to the bone. i love the funny ass james brown cover.

Jimmy Smith - Back At the Chicken Shack
By far more blues-ier and chiller than the other later stuff from Blue Note - but still dope. The whole album is consistant and relaxing. I've only heard Smith's pre-66 stuff (besides Root Down), so I need to get more of his post-66 stuff. From what I've read it's all goodness.

Ronnie Foster - "Two Headed Freap"
Madness...this is one of my favorite albums right now. Couple ok tracks but the rest are dope as hell.

Jimmy McGriff - "Electric Funk"
One of the most consistantly dope Blue Note LPs I have. Non-stop funky platters of goodness. There's something about the way McGriff fires out his notes...he's got a unique execution!

I know John Patton has some wicked stuff. I don't have any of his LPs yet though. But from what I've heard he's fire.

Yes! Those are all good albums... all of them... as far as organists go.....

I love the Jimmy Smith album I'm Movin On (trio: Smith, Grant Green on guitar, Don Bailey on the drum kit)....
It's not one of the best albums, but to me personally, it's excellent...

Damn... there's so many i want but don't have....

Ooo... if you like Eletric Funk. you have to get The Worm! Jimmy kills it on this one....and it's got Bob Bushnell on the Bass? What? This album is DOPE.......

actually, I don't own any of them on vinyl. I stopped buying vinyl religiously a while back. Now I just pick up something if I find it cheap. I have all of them on CD, so I can listen to them everywhere I go. Speaking of McGriff, I just won the "The Worm!" CD for hella cheap on eBay. Can't wait to hear it. Who's Bob Bushnell?

You mentioned Grant Green. He's one of my main guitar influences aside from Wes and John Abercrombie. Grant Green has some ultra chill stuff. Alive! is hella dope, track 2 is my cut. I like that lounge-sound. Hella samples on that LP too! I just found a Dre sample on his track "Maybe Tomorrow" from the Visions LP. Dope track!
