Just interested to see who u all would nominate for mc with the most soul in his/her raps..at the moment im thinking 2pac for sure..songs like 'how long will they mourn me', 'dear mama', 'starin at the world through my rearview' spring to mind.
grouch got nuff soul too. in all his work. slugs got that raw emotion in his songs too.. im a lil stumped for track names but i definately like what he got going on there.
holla
soulful rapper?? i don't think grouch or 2pac are soulful whatever that means. but pete rock and cl smooth fit more into what yer tryin to categorize. also, rakim, atcq, mos def, talib kweli, etc. too. to each their own i guess. its all good

by soulful i meant the sincerity and emotion they portray in their raps..i think 2pac got a lot of that..i guess soulful is abit misleading, but, ya know...im feelin the rappers u mentioned..

hey slug s got mad soul rakim with whos god is definetly looking for answers to the mysteries at risk of sounding lame i reall y think gza has soul so does all the clan wu thats is but slug still seems to put his heart out there so that = heart to me
slug reminds me of a white snoop dog cus a lot of his rhymes are about girls and shit. and its not wack like all the bitch songs LL Cool J does. its all good. the whole rhymesayers crew is dope. another emcee that is 'soulful' in my opinion is Common. every album he puts out is different like outkast albums. he ain't monotone.
my 200th post! yeah

hmm. soulful. i don't think anybody any of you have listed have soulful vocals in my opinion. not if you compare it to actual soul music. if you mean sincere and not soulful, that's a whole other something. it's somewhat rare for rappers to have soul. some do, but not people who dominate over their beats. a good example of a soulfully executed rap song is attica black by blackalicious. i would call that soulful. the rhythm, the use of melody, the overall fluent motion of the song makes it seem like it's not even a rap song. erykah badu has soul too.
thats what i was saying.. soulful rapper?? its hard to stipulate like a soulful singer.. but who cares. wack thread.

my bad i didn't notice where you said "sincerity and emotion". sorry bro. however as I was just walking down the street I realized who the ultimate "soulful" hip hop musician is in my eyes. That would be Mikah9. Have you heard It's All Love? STRAGHT BUTTER styles. The singing is on point, the orchestration of the whole project is just amazing. You can tell that the people involved in creating this album (namely Mikah and Joseph Liemburg (sp)) know what they are doing and are, at the very least, informally trained in rhythm and blues and jazz music. Yet this album still contains that hard edge/street style. Even though this album was made probably 3-4 years ago, I'm gonna say it's my favorite album of the millenium so far in hip hop.

Anthony - Ya must be thinkin' of something else, I have enjoyed that album since about 6 months after I got it. Maybe I did talk to you in that period, but I don't remember. I got it when he first put it out as a bootleg under the company name "Smacked Yak Productions" or somethign like that. It was the first time it was available, which was a couple years ago. It's funny though, when I first got the album, I didn't really catch on the first couple of listens then I shelved it. I broke it out again a few months later to discover how complete and perfected the album is. So yes, it did grow on me. Now it is one of my favorite albums.
Dharna - I'm not really too sure about his father, but you should check out this album "Influenced By Intensity" if you haven't already. You can get more info on it @ Omid's site (www.omidpage.com). It's a great album. It has some more "traditional" jazz music along with some nice electronic (hip hop) instrumental stuff. JMD, one of the cats who worked with the Fellowship early on, has a song on here with his double quintet, it's amazing. Peace.
