im the one who said it's a gimmick. and yes it is. i aint feelin doom, but a lot of people do, i aint knockin that.

yes it is a gimmick, how can you say its not? its right up there with 50 and eminem and their shit. just because you feel doom more than you do 50 or em does not make the fact that the mask is a gimmick.

hell, kanye west's "best dressed rapper" shit is a gimmick. snoop dogg's izzle & glorified pimp shit is a gimmick. come on, 99% of rappers need a gimmick to sell to their target demographic, anything you say otherwise to contradict this is patently false.

Yes and no.

I don't see the mask as a big part of Doom's steez. I'll take Doc Doom panels on my album covers all day regardless...

I have the feeling the mask is on some stage persona/alter ego shit. He's performed live shows so rarely over the years that it makes sense that he might not be too comfortable on stage, despite how well he rips it. I don't now if any of yall have ever performed in costume, but for a lot of people it really does allow them to lose their inhibitions and almost become an entirely different person.

Doom's mask is as much a part of his persona as say Robert Smith wearing make up and dressing in black.....it might be semi-intentional but it's part of the whole package, ya know?

plus when doom came out he didn't necessarily want anyone to know it was zev luv x cause he probably wanted a new start after the whole shit that went down with KMD...

From "The Fire Next Time" by James Baldwin

"Every Negro boy in my situation during those years, at least who reaches this point realizes, at once, profoundly, because he wants to live, that he stands in great peril and must find, with speed, a "thing," a gimmick, to lift him out, to start him on his way. And it does not matter what the gimmick is."

This was first published in the fifties and I think sheds some light on how hip hop has developed, especially its reliance on gimmickry to sell to white audiences.

i never meant for the term gimmick to be taken negatively. it is what it is. keep it cynical and literal, not negatively.
