yea i remember seein a tight ass show a few years back at a fraternity house at sdsu. some of the brothers were originally from the bay so they hooked up the show. nickatina and equipto ripped that shit. it was around the same time they dropped "midnight machine gun rhymes and alibis". that show was ill. we were supposed to get in for free but when we got there, my friend (who was in the frat) couldnt hook it up. so we climbed in through the laundry room window and got in for free anyways.

That dude from Kmel was Theo Misohara (sp?), with the super deep voice who was always trying to act really smooth but sounding like it was forced...
Tres Dog STILL does CMC, and STILL dresses and acts like it's 1993... funny shit.
Evan Luck, man thats a classic Love Lines name with the "Moments in Love" beat from Art of Noise... he was great though from what i can remember; that takes me waaay back to 5th grade. I don't know what he's up to, but I know Rick Chase passed away around a year ago.
The classic..., 415, MC Pooh, IMP Dogs, RBL... lovely, still have my original RBL, but sold the others like a dummy.. now i'm trying to find some of them on Ebay.
You can't forget shit like Askari X, anyone heard of The Product? (used to roll with RBL... had a dope song called "Bitches and Cops," and "you can't fade me"), Totally Insane, Dru Down, Spice 1 (used to slam 187 proof), Mishani... man, i'm sure there are a lot more I can't think of right now...
Anotha Level was funny... I think Pharcyde was on a few tracks, but they did completely bite a few styles. I think I might buy it again to see what kind of garb I was listening to. All I remember from that group was that they had two dudes in it, named Stix & Stones but neither of them ever rapped or anything. whatever.

Heater, did you ever hear of the Bay Area Art Collective, a big group that came out of Berkeley/Oakland in about 1996 with tons of different MC's plus Dj Riddm? I'm curious to see if anyone remembers these cats...

let me just say..anotha level was from los angeles, not the bay..ive known Stenge since i was in jr. high..and i wouldnt call them 'pharcyde biters'..as a matter of fact, they worked with the pharcyde on their first album(see: 'Phat-T')..they had a couple really good songs on their album 'on anotha level' but the majority of it was nothing too special..laylaw(from above the law) actually put them on..and cube signed on as 'executive producer'..which definitely helped them sell records..but 'whats that cha say' will always be the knock..regardless of how the rest of the album is..

maybe geography has something to do with this. well.. at least you're not frontin like you're a mac dre fan.. cuz you know only folks from vallejo truly understand mac dre's music from an anthropological standpoint.. ..just fuckin w/ya.
ray luv wasn't from vallejo.. he was from santa rosa.. he just happened to be on young black brotha records. and yeah.. like ^ he said.. anotha level from la...
you had to be feelin mac mall though. i like some of his shit better than e40's. Untouchable is a dope album.

Nobody remembers Capital Tax? They were tight, on some uptempo party shit. And they had a dancer in the crew named Loose Dookey- perhaps the best hip hop name ever.
APG were dope. I have the first LP on vinyl. It's unfortunate though- their best song by far was 12 Man Rambo, and they only put that on the cassette. Their first LP was THE shit around the Bay in '90 or so... they couldn't even keep up with the demand. If you didn't make it to the OLD Rasputins where that shoe store is now the very day they dropped off more tapes, you had to wait a while longer.
IMP had some dope shit early on too... Coug Nut wasn't bad and they had some slumpin beats.
You gotta love 415... Groupie Ass Bitch is an all-time classic. Life of a Criminal is the beat too... just dug it outta the old box of tapes a while ago and it still works for me.
And Hiero did NOT introduce conscious rap to the Bay. Too $hort did. Girl (That's Your Life) was way ahead of it's time, and he had a lot of other songs like City of Dope, The Ghetto, I Wanna Be Free, etc. that were on the conscious tip. He just didn't go out of his way to come off like that. Plus he could get his point across through his story telling skills instead of some in-your-grill preaching. It's a shame that so many people don't associate him with anything but his dirtier shit.

i can see your point with too short but i think del did more to usher in a whole new approach to bay hip hop -- a style that valued lyrics and flow as much as the bump aspect - short did drop some thoughtful gems in his time and he is a certified legend - he was putting shit out in like 83 if im not mistaken. who can compare with that?
trivia question - apg stood for action packed gangstas but had another meaning as well - obscure but what the hell - you have that on vinyl? wow.
also-BUMs, brothas unda madness from the o too.

Haha hell yeah, andy kawanomi was tight he played the best shit and renel (i think thats her name) used to host it too on certain days i think she's on 98.1 now or some other station she's still around. Theo misahara something like that. I remember he went down to 92.3 beat in LA and I remember around that time he had like this little show on MTV over the summer.
Franzen's ass is out in Las Vegas now. Didn't they get kicked off because they were doin drugs or something like that in the studio?
The BUMS were tight too! Does anybody remember a song they used to play on CMC by this dude EL-Dogg and the song was about gettin' your sag on? and the hook was a snoop sample? maybe i'm the only one. Man I could go on for dayyyys!

i remember the dark day on CMC when franzen was saying it was his last day and he never explained why.. it was all dramatic and emotional.... drugs huh? i guess that makes sense.
and yea Renel is everywhere... 98.1 (probably the most popular dj on that station), she does a morning tv show on KPIX, and shes the announcer at Pac Bell Park-the only female announcer in MLB. that girl keeps busy!

Yeah I think too much has been made about Hiero's lyrics. People tried to classify them as a West Coast Native Tongues crew, but in retrospect they never really came like that. Almost all of their shit was either shit talking or just kinda silly, not very thought provoking. Those fools could always rhyme their asses off though. The flows on the Hiero Oldies tapes are just ridiculous. I do think they took MCing to new levels, and it's a shame that so much of the illest shit they did didn't make it out to the masses. Step To My Girl for example... sample clearance issues aside, there is NO WAY that gem should've only been dropped on some compilation cassette. I think they just got kind of a hippy/artsy reputation because their style contrasted so sharply with everything else coming out of the Bay back then.
The BUMS were cool, there was one song on their album I liked a lot... wouldn't call em "old school" though.
And fuck all the marks from KMEL, past and present. It was all about Bay COLLEGE radio. Sunday mornings on KALX, The Drum on KZSU, Sunday afternoons on KPOO, Spiderman on Mondays... definitely the biggest influences on me as a DJ. I was just reminiscing with my boy about that the other day. Still remember rolling up into the Oakland hills, finding a spot with good 90.1 reception and blazing sittin on the hood of my girl's car. Those were the fuckin days...
