hell yes, he is only one of the most influencial funk pioneers to ever grace our ears. he's really really great. check out those links posted by lbfam and tgone for more info. def. check out his albums 'woman is sweeter' and 'shapes of rhythm.' also, check out his collab with bernard purdie 'purdie as a picture/fantasy for two guitars.' simply amazing but i can't find it on vinyl.

is this album(up from the basement) similar to david axelrod's self titled album that came out not too long ago? as far as it being a comp of some of his older/ unreleased stuff

yes, i have it and it is bangin! some of the stuff was released on his older albums that i mentioned. you said you had the cd? i've got the vinyl so i don't know if it's exactly the same as far as what's on the sleeve. mine has commentary on the making of the album by some dude who jocks mr. macdermot and he basically just talks about how he met him and got the chance to dig his vaults and convinced him to release this sort of 'best of' on galt's label. his stuff is very similar to axelrod. very funky drums and galt lays down the ivory.
