anyway i think it kinda pisses me off cause in lucy ford he was spittin shit about "and i'm happy i ain't famous, imagine waking up to the thought that your simply entertainment, i bet god thinks you amusing" and now he goes and puts his shit on mtv and goes on the warp tour and totally changes his sound from lucy and overcast to something i can only compare to a mainstream sound. i suppose i am only grieving a great loss. i still love you slug o even if you sell out....

ok, i don't want to get too involved, and i'm not a slug fan, but i think that if you people were artists of a similar nature, you would understand. some may say that the goal of art is to express yourself, but ultimately, the goal of art is to be successful. that is the nature of the game. i think that when people like slug become popular - regardless of whether i think what they are doing is appealing to me - that they are achieving their goals. it's not like homie is doing jiggy club songs, he's still spreading the same intent that he was when he started. seak, you say his intent has changed, but in reality, maybe just his subject matter has changed. intentions are not necessarily revealed in lyrics. he may have always had the intention of being heard by a large, worldwide audience. maybe you just never heard that in his songs because he was still growing to that point. something i have definitely learned is that there is a natural progression with an artist. if what you do at the start is the same as what you do in the end, then you're most likely not going to be very successful. i've learned that art usually starts out dirty and chaotic, and then refines to a simplistic, streamlined process. This happens because the artist learns the corners he can cut, and at the same time, it simplifies a complex structure (which is the basic formula for nature) and opens the viewpoint to a larger, more diverse audience. Fans tend to not see this aspect, but artists who grow usually do.
i can tell you, as an artist, that when you start out, it's all about the creative process and learning the shapes and curves of the art. but as you become confident with what you're doing, you feel that it should be received by a larger audience. here's an analogy for you: if you spent your life trying to figure out the formula to cure a disease, and you finally did it, would you only share it with your friends? or would you spread it worldwide and collect the fame and feeling of accomplishment from it? i don't think slug sold out, i think he made it to where he was trying to go. and that's respectful. i just don't like his music all that much. but that's beside the fact. homie is making his moves and people shouldn't get mad at him for it. you still have those underground tapes. you still have everything he did before. either you can grow with the artist, or you can fall off as a fan and criticize him. at least you have something to enjoy from the past. there's tons of other music to enjoy in this world. if an artist stops pleasing you with his work, then find something else. don't stop dead in your tracks to scorn him.
boy am i fuckin' talkative and thoughtful this weekend.

mainstream sound?
If you get in the van consistently for like six years straight touring like half the year and release several albums, some people will start to pay attention to what you're doing (sometimes). That's all I have to say, time to drive to Madison, WI.
toby tofu fo' life.

buck65 just signed to WB Canada and he still has 100% full control over his music, cover art, packaging, etc. people think they know soooo much. talk more when you've signed the record deal yourself. i'm not trying to diss, but you look silly getting defensive over soemthing you really don't know anything about. i'm not saying i know more about it, but i am saying i know that i don't know.

did i ever say everyone signed to a major label is a bitch? no. i said 95% of them become the labels bitch. i still respect the roots and outkast for doin their thing. but i have no respect for people like fabulous, camron, chingy, or murphy lee or any of those gimmicks.

yeah, but those people weren't rappers before they were major label rappers. they don't even count. they are mere marketing tools. money makers. most true hip hop musicians who sign to majors don't end up being "label bitches". shit, some of them will even go to jail before submitting to the demands of their label. i don't know where you get your percentages, but they seem way off to me.

So you don't own ANY releases by non-indy record labels? Even some indy labels aren't completely indepedent anymore.

no that's not entirely true. i know underground producers who will sell beats for a lot more than they normally do so that the person buying it can take full credit for the work. instead of putting that producer's name on their cd. it happens, believe it or not.

Eggzachary....
example:
$100 for beat.
$500 for beat and credit.
