ok, so i put in the infideltiy project disc one, and winamp automatically started searching for the details for the album. it found the shit. how does that work? we only made 500 copies of the album, no barcodes, how does winamp find the song titles and all that shit? it bugged me out. it also found the outkast southerplayalistic tracklist off a burned cd.

I think how it works usually is that if another consumer bought the cd and input the album details onto a CDDB database then when you put your cd in the player, it connects to that database and DL's the tracklisting. The thing is I don't if winamp uses CDDB or not, I know my ITunes does. I couldn't tell you about the CD-R though.
my windows media player got the tracklistings off of a burned cd.. maybe when you burn it.. you're also burning a tracklisting also? IONNO..just a shot in the dark..

I do believe that's how it works. The track listing is info that's stored on the CD, and when you copy a CD it gets all the album info on it too.

but it says it's searching a database (i think that CDDB) to find the info. it doesn't pull it directly from the CD. i guess somebody just submitted it to the database. that's pretty tight. lot of work. like 38 songs.

its prolly getting info from the CD and matching with info from the database

no........ theres a little piece of information on every cd that is unique to whats on it.
so in the case of the burned cd, someone made that very same cd and submitted tracklistings. so when it searched cddb(and yes winamp uses cddb), it matched your little piece of information with the other persons and downloaded the tracklist
same with the cd with only 500 copies, someone with a copy of it typed out the tracklisting and submitted it
it is hella crazy how sometimes mix cd's turn up with results
i remember i made a cd with half one cd, half another and it still found it
