View Full Version : Lyrics Born - Later That Day
Damn, this album is HOTT! I was a little disappointed upon first listen - but I've been waiting for this album for so many years there was no way it was going to live up to my expectations. But I think I'm now in my 4th listening of it and it's damn fresh. He's got those LB patented flows that make my head spin - he can do some crazy things with his voice.
Anyone else pick it up yet? If not, DO IT!

How is the production? Is it in the vein of Latyrx?
The production is quite a bit funkier on some songs, and cleaner all the way through (maybe a "bigger" sound too?). It's quite good. At first I wasn't feeling some of it too much (when I heard songs on the website before the album dropped), but they're all really growing on me. I remember when I first bought Latyrx I hated "Balcony Beach" but now that's one of my favorite songs of all time. "Before and After" off of LTD is the next "Balcony Beach" - I liked this one upon first listen, he's just kinda breaking down life situations like he did on "BB". And there's a song with Lateef that reminds me a bit of "Storm Warning", fucking good stuff! I dunno, Latyrx is one of my all-time favorite albums - I don't see how you wouldn't like LTD if you like The Album...LB can produce his ass off!
Oh yeah, and the album cover is one of the best in a long, long time. I was thinking of buying the vinyl just to put the jacket on my wall. Anyone have the vinyl? Is it a gatefold?

Went to Streetlight hoping to cop the vinyl yesterday, and it hadn't come in yet. Same with Hiero and Shabazz.
They had the Jaylib though. I've listened to the first disc, and it's pretty disappointing so far.
I was gonna go see Lyrics Born in SF tomorrow, but Peanut Butter Wolf is having his 20th anniversary of DJing party in San Jose so I'm hittin that up instead. He's spinning a 4 hour set of all '83 tunes. Shit's gonna be fun.

i don't like LTD as much as the latyrx but it's pretty tight. it's more soulful than funky i would say. lots of female backing vocals and relatively 'soft' beats. it's good to mellow out with a female to. did i miss something about a new latyrx album? is that in the works or is lateef dropping something soon?
ps. what's a gatefold?

I think you're crazy for passing up the LB Record Release Party - that's gonna be one helluva show! I've only seen him once, but he's got great stage presence. And Quannum shows across the board are always hoppin.

Yeah, I guess it's pretty soulful - I was listening to a "funkier" track when I wrote that. I definately wasn't feeling this album right off the bat, but now in my 6th listen it's great - I can't decide whether I like this or The Good Brothers more, I guess it's whichever one I'm listening to at the time!
That's Joyo singing the backing vocals - her album should be coming out later this year.
I dunno about a new Latyrx album - that'd be fresh though! But Lateef is dropping an album with (damn, forgot the name of the band - German funk band) backing him under the name The Maroons. (Or maybe The Maroons are Lateef and Gab? I forget.)
A gatefold is when the jacket is double (or triple) the size of a normal LP and it folds down the middle with a record in each part of the sleeve instead of throwing two records into a single sleeve. (At least I thought those were called gatefolds?)

Yup, that's a gatefold.
The Maroons are Lateef and Chief Xcel, and yeah I think they have an album on the way. Although Lateef with the Poets Of Rhythm (the German funk band) would be tight too.
Yo Blue I've seen Quannum/Solesides quite a bit. That's gonna be a dope show for sure, but the PBW party, man... an hour less of a drive each way, all '83 tunes, and drinking scotch with Knacker and my boys beforehand? I'm there.

so these are instrumenatlists who REMAKE old funk songs? that's tight. i've heard that discern define (actually tried to pick it up at access but no luck!) and that shit is banging. i didn't know they weren't original tracks though. i've been digging for more shit of that sort like medeski, martin & wood. any recommendations?
i'd like to recommend the new josh one ep, 'grey skies.' i think he's like the EXECUTIVE producer, and part of the live instrumentation backing band who did the beats. aloe blacc rips the first track, 'risin.'
access has the audio clip for the song in the store section. check it.

Yeah hopefully the scotch will hamper his teleportation skills. You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him.
Yo Archer I had a feeling you'd be into that show... all the info I got was from Janelle's site (you rock for that, btw) so I probably don't know any more about it than you. I DO know that I'm gonna get extremely intoxicated and shake my ass though.
There HAS to be a bus between Fremont BART and downtown San Jo...
