what?! this LP is banging. Tightest stuff I've heard in a while. This stuff has some soul and substance to it. The beats hit hard too.

Rules of the Game is a dope comp. There's a Mystic song produced by The Angel (i believe) called "Ok...Alright" and there's some nice legends stuff on there. Maybe a bored stiff cut, and more. It's a cool album you should check it out.

I feel like most ladies in Hip Hop are OVERRATED... but you are definitely right about the Angel...
The only girls I feel are underrated are Angel, Mystic, Nemesiz (chicago underground), Medusa, Neb Luv, Newsense from Psychodrama, and TLove.
I think that girls in all aspects of hiphop are basically praised just for being women that are doing hip hop things. That's not cool... for instance, in a breaking circle, if a guy does a cool air flair 90 beachball combo, the crowd goes just as nuts for some girl doing some weak ass down rock pose combo. I think that sucks, it s like people geek up women just for DOING it it, but not for being GOOD at it. They dont get better that way, u know what I mean? Same thing with female DJs writers, mcs, whatever. It especially sucks, because I think that in most cases, the women that actually work hard and are dedicated to it, and apply themselves end up doing whatever it is waaaay better than their average male counterparts.

Maybe I'll go dig it out of whatever web-covered crate it's sitting in right now and give it another shot, but I recall the beats being boring and the songs were all too long... the only thing that kept me from falling asleep was my anger over having just paid money for it.
Tgone you peeped the Caural LP? That's a nice one on the down tempo tip that I haven't heard anybody talking about...

yeah, my homie Chris can do some crazy shit and when i don't praise a b-girl for doing some half assed shit i get looked at like a fucking heater...some females have over inflated egos and all they are is stink on shit.

do you think Apani gets enough praise that she isnt underated... or do you think that she just sucks... cuzz i think she is fuckin ill as well as jean...
but i feel ya on everything else.... its good that females are getting some much needed respect in many industries.. but it sucks that people instantly asume you are the underdog... but i dont think people should get praised for half assed shit work either ... so with that in mind... its okay if you dont play a "role" in this 4 element culture... and its okay if you just like good music...

most definitely. if a females skills are up to par with her male counterparts on a certain level, i think the fact that she is a female brings an extra dimension to what it is that's being done.

Apani is without a doubt one of the most underrated artists in all of hip hop... she was a member of one of hip hop's best groups, all the 12"s she's dropped have at least one DOPE song on em, she works with the tightest producers in the game, and still gets no love. She had an EP so close to dropping last May that it was advertised for sale on line, but it never came out and I haven't heard a word about it since. Fucking wack...
Yo Archer that Apani/Jean Grae song is on The Beatminerz compilation LP that dropped last year... I forget the title. I couldn't quite bring myself to buying it just for that song, and they never put it on a single. Is it the beat?
And who exactly are all these overrated females? After Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Charli Baltimore and the other garbage spewing club rap hos, I can't think of any REAL female artist that is overrated. Missy is the only female I can think of that blew up off something other than her bare ass. Positive females get no play whatsoever. Shit, Lauryn Hill didn't need to get all emotional and dramatic about being too large... all she had to do was go back to her roots and start rapping her ass off again if she didn't want to be famous. It's worked well for Apani...
That girl Invincible is alright, but I think she fucked up and has lost her buzz... that's what you get for trying too hard to be underground. Hopefully she'll drop a record some day...
Jay Kaboom!

Apani... Well, I cant honestly say I think she sucks, because I can't listen to a whole verse of hers without bashing my head through a wall because her voice annoys the hell out of me!!!
as for Neila, I've never heard so I don't know.
HIGHLIFE - I think that the people like u that appreciate the arts are just as important as those that do it. I'm not anything really.. I mean, I dance, and I bboy a little bit, and I write spoken word, but I'm not a rapper or any of that stuff. What's an artist with out a consumer, you know? Broke as hell with a bunch of cd's in their garage, that's what

That's the farthest thing from being a nerd. There's nothing wrong with that at all. To me the herbs are the people that aren't comfortable just being a fan and feel the need to participate whether or not they have anything to offer creatively. I mean I'd like to think I have some skills on the decks, but when I go to shows I chill just like that... good music, cool peeps, a Long Island or three, a few spliffs and I'm in heaven.

exactly. but do you go to shows alone? cuz none of my friends are 'down' with hiphop so i always end up cruising alone. and i feel like a complete idiot just coming up to people and introducing myself, like hey what's up. you guys blaze? i just always feel like i'll get shut down like people will just walk away from me. it's happened before so now i just stick to me, myself, and i.
but all the b-girls and even b-boys i've seen seem really humble. they're just feeling the music, even if they're not that good, they're still getting down and practicing. it takes a lot of guts to get in front of a crowd and try to look like you know what you're doing. but i have seen a couple emcees that think they are real tight during the parking lot cyphers but when i see them at the open mic they just lose it. but i think it's really great when you start seeing some familiar faces at shows and then finally they come out either on the mic or on the one's & two's and just rip the whole place to shreds. those are the people i want to start kicking it with.

I have the exact same issues about going to shows... other than my homeboy Obstacle I don't have anybody to go with. And I don't have a car, which is usually a must. I've gone to shows alone when I knew people performing, but otherwise I never had the nerve for pretty much the same reason... it would just seem kinda uncomfortable... but I honestly wouldn't let it stop me anymore, now that I have Archer as an inspiration for going solo. I mean it's not like anything bad like getting puked on or having a tire slashed is gonna happen right? I've been sleeping on "The Ass" for a while (that sounds funny, huh huh huh), but I've been rockin that God Send track off the Monch album on a daily basis so it's within reach for a listen...
Yeah you're right about most hip hop heads being humble, nice folks... especially the DJ's, which has surprised me. Even the hot shots I've met seemed like very mellow, down to earth people. The raver crowd on the other hand... so many of the DJ's I've met that were into that scene were fucking dicks. I've always found the contrast very interesting... I think hip hop DJ's are more about the music and let their skills do the talking, while the ravers are more on an ego/social trip. Hip hop DJ's know their shit talking asses will get served if they mouth off, but ravers don't actually have to deal with that stuff... you know, like skills...
and bboying is just dancing... folks shouldn't feel like they have to be technically dope to get funky at a show. I give the people that just kinda do their little thing mad props, more so than the dudes that do power moves and nothing else. I like seeing people dance at shows, because you know they're happy.

yeah i feel y'all on the going to shows thing. i only go to local shows for the most part, and only if guest-listed. I go to national shows if it's somebody i really wanna see - and again - only if i'm guest listed, which is pretty often. Thing is, when I go to local spots, usually the same ones over and over, it's more like a house party with my homies. I get shout outs from the stage, free drinks from my ballin' buddies, introductions to ladies i have yet to meet, and all that. It's the only reason I go. I don't get too stimulated from watching some rappers rock a mic on stage anymore. Unless it's a friend of mine or somebody I'm working with who's rocking my beats. Then I like to hear the beats on the system, and then immediately go home and adjust them accordingly. rap is cool and all, but if there ain't no vibe (or no ladies) at a show, then no matter who is rocking, i'm not really gonna have fun. As for going alone, that doesn't happen usually, cuz like Ipatch, I don't have a car. And if I do roll solo, I'm almost sure to see at least a handful of people I know. So it usually works out.

about the Bboy thing. That's why it's so nice to be a breaker. I always feel like the rap guys at events are all so damn overbearing and cocky and too big for their damned size 40 jeans. It seems to me that bboys and bgirls are always cool to meet new people, and djs and mcs are kind of on some wierd pedestal stuff. That's one of the major things that made me like Anacron so much... I think that anyone that's so serious about dancing or breaking is pretty cool because they associate with those type of people regularly... which may just be an assumption, but I've seen him live and people I know have met him and the consensus is that he's pretty damn down to earth overall.
Rusty...
man, I probably dont listen to as much rap as most of the people on this forum. so I must admit I've never even heard Jean Grae, Invincible, helix, or lyric. Apani's voice is so annoying to me I cant stand to listen to her (much like eminem... their voices make me cringe, I dont know it's just me I guess). I wouldn't say Bahamadia doesn't have skillz, but I just personally don't like her lyrical content or delivery... although her voice is pretty soothing.
I'm picky I guess
Johnny BomB!~
yeah, when i use to go to shows and clubs by myself all the time, groups of kids from like livermore or half moon bay or some shit would approach me thinkin i was selling drugs (usually acid or weed). i'd be "hey, i'm lookin for some shit just like you, i'm all dry." i'd feel like people would think i was sketchin out or something cuz i'd be the guy walking back and forth all over the place.. standing inside doorways people watching..staring at fools' girlfriends right in front of them.. lookin for somebody with an extra sack to kick down.. then i'd just end up kickin it with that one older rasta dude who always carries a drum (but never plays it) and seems to show up at every damn event (shows, parties, clubs, galleries, etc) in the city. he would never have any weed to sell, but he'd smoke you out if you'd just listen to his roots & culture talk.. and then i'd go outside and talk nonsense with that one permanently fried white dude with the run-dmc shirt, carrying a skateboard with no wheels who always seems to be outside of the shows who only speaks random gibberish because he took too much acid in high school.. he'd start off every sentence like he was about to recite some oldschool rap, then he'd just trail off talkin about ferdinand marcos and cheetos or something like that... the memories.
what this has to do with underrated females.. i haven't a clue.

I'm surprised people on here don't feel Apani. I dig her voice and she's better than a lot of male MCs. Her tracks 'Soul Control' and 'The Spirit Within' are fresh. No ifs and butts!

Her album is tight aside from ill bill's ugly sounding ass on one or two cuts. stuff with rahzel was tight though. children of the corn. and a lot of other parts of the album. i almost forgot she came out with a newer track on that connected compilation. there's a dope blackalicious song on there too.

Ladybug is comin back on the solo tip, from what I understand all Wesside rough rugged and raw this time through.
I heard from a pretty reliable source that she basically broke up Digable Planets over that shit... she wanted to get a lot harder musically and lyrically, Butterfly and Doodlebug disagreed and wanted to stick to the jazzy style, and that was that.:( :( :(
Nobody gave The D.A. and Mahasin from Hobo Junction any love in here either. They're way tight...
And I gotta stick up for my DJ brethren... there's gotta be a lot of fools with bad attitudes and egos out there, but in all seriousness, the handful of hip hop DJ's that I've associated with are some of the nicest people I've ever met from any walk of life. Unfortunately self-promotion and who you know can have a lot more to do with getting gigs than skills. When you're at a show, the DJ spinning might have his nose in the air, but I'll bet there are a few cool people in the crowd with skills just laying low in the cut. A lot of DJ's are shy/introverts too, and that can easily get mistaken for a bad attitude. It's a shitty contradiction of the art form... be a hermit, stay true, practice practice practice for the love, and be a dork with skills but no gigs, or socialize, pump yourself up, play Lil Kim and be a dick WITH gigs...
