>For the record, who are you and what do you do?
We are Quote Naj (emcee, shit-talker & drinker) & Moonsatellite (emcee, producer & professional cynic - i laugh at bad music all day).
>How is the hip-hop scene in Atlanta?
Moonsatellite: It's not what it seems like from the outside looking in - just Outkast and Goodie Mob. There's a lot of talent here, cats like Humble Servants, Binkis, 4ize, Prophetix, Unxnoun Ceeds, Sugafist the Gangsta, DJ Risistence, Hemisphere... i could go on and on. Most of the artists know each other, so it's cool.
Quote Naj: It's getting bigger. A lot of groups trying to make some noise, and most likely we'll see this year if it's the real deal or not.
>Is the internet a good or bad thing for the art of emceeing?
Quote Naj: It's GOOD! We might be able to turn things around and KILL THE INDUSTRY. Maybe this generation of artists won't be 65 and broke.
Moonsatellite: It's the next logical step. Most major labels are whorehouses and now that things are digital, cats can record and market their own music on a worldwide scale... and maybe even OWN THEIR MASTERS. Just this week we've hollered at cats from Canada to Hungary.
>As far as production, who are your influences?
Moonsatellite: Hmmm.... Bomb Squad, Jay Dilla, Funkadelic, Pete Rock (the master), Madlib (the next master), Ced Gee, MF Doom, Prince, Extra P, Q-Tip, Primo, Prince Paul
>Who are your influences as far as emceeing?
Quote Naj: Big Daddy Kane, Outkast, Redman, Tash, old Common, Nas, Ghostface, E-40, Ras Kass, Chuck D, J-Zone
Moonsatellite: Mikah Nine, Del, Organized Konfusion, Cannibal Ox, Ghostface Killah - in fact, the whole Wu-Tang, Kool Keith, Andre 3000, old Ice Cube (before he "put his back into it").
>If you could either record a track with Outkast or punch George W. Bush in
>the face, live on televeision, which would you choose to do?
> Quote Naj: I'd punch George W. Bush in the face. Doing a track with Outkast would be a career-defining moment, but punching George Bush in the face would be a life-defining moment.
Moonsatellite: That's a hard one, cause Dubya's dumb as rocks... and he's our leader. Hmmm... I'd have Killer Mike go punch him while i record the song with Outkast.
>When does your album drop?
> Moonsatellite: Right now, we're working on solo albums, mine is called "Gorilla Season"...
Quote Naj: Whenever it's done, that's the beauty of independence. "The Third Finger" lp, it's coming soon.
Moonsatellite: Werd, peep the website, http://bigmoone.com for updates and such.
>What is more important on a track, beat, flow,or lyrics?
> Quote Naj: No one is more important than the other. It all has to flow together. If one's lacking, it's gonna show.
Moonsatellite: It depends on the song, really, but all are important. You can have the most pristine beat with a cat spitting booty-chatter and it all comes out to nothing. They're all integral.
>Who is leading the hip-hop scene right now?
Quote Naj: As far as majors, 50, Jay, Nas. As far as indies, Def Jux.
Moonsatellite: 15 year-olds are leading the hip-hop scene right now. It's a tragic case of the blind leading the blind... into feeding greedy corporations. That's why some cats think rap sucks.... but i don't anymore.
>Who is killing it?
Quote Naj: Ghost! Nobody's touching him right now.
Moonsatellite: Yeah, that "Holla" song is mega.
Quote Naj: And i gotta hear what Andre 3000 does on a solo disc.
Moonsatellite: Definitive Jux is murkin cats. Past that, a bunch of monkeys rule the airwaves with tales of diamond-encrusted bananas and Escalades.
>How do you feel about a group like the UHPHRA starting up?
Moonsatellite: It's mega, hip-hop and punk at their best share that primal energy. Plus we're advocates of the mosh pit.
Quote Naj: It's cool, cause everything's not segregated. Music and life, it's the same, they both just blend.
>Any closing comments?
Quote Naj: Yeah, it ain't safe no more, and other such rap cliches. "Third Finger", biyatch!
Moonsatellite: It's "Gorilla Season"! Run, hide, if you suck donkey members, stop rappin. Once again, the website is http://bigmoone.com. We've got a song on the upcoming compilation "Veganz Want Beef II", on B9000 Records called "Don't Try This @ Home" that's getting international airplay. We're rocking at a big festival called Illfest in August with the Weathermen, Icon The Mic King, and loads of others, plus there's a $5,000 mc battle.. check out www.illfest.com for details. Peace to Thrust, Grym Reemer, Greedy Jones and Gershwin BLX. OUT!
peace to Emcee Homeless & the UHPHRA, good lookin out.
