View Full Version : Chali2na - Fish Outta Water - anyone else disappointed?
Just bought the cd at a local record store. I guess they just put it out a couple days before the official release.
Anyway, I'm on track 6 now and so far not a single track has blown me away. The overall sound seems to lean towards a slick/mainstream vibe, which is fine if it's done right, but here it fails to excite me for some reason. The verses and hooks just don't seem that great to me.
I'm curious to hear what other people think.

You're only gonna give it one listen? It's a dope album, I like it a lot.
My copy is officially on ebay now. If anyone wants it, you can search for it there.
I guess my taste is just different than you guys because I didn't care for the album at all. Usually I can tell if I like something on the first listen unless we're talking about experimental genres of music or something that's kind of weird, then it might take a couple listens to sink in. Anyway, I can't see myself enjoying this album very much so I'd rather pass it on to someone who will.
I got the Toki Wright album the same day and think it's a much better record by far.

I definitely have some gripes with the production, but I think the biggest thing is it just made me realize that maybe Charli 2na doesn't work as a solo emcee. When he's not coming in as a change of pace, when he's the voice of the album, it can get monotonous. His voice has power, it's distinctive, but it doesn't have character of a Chuck D, for example. In terms of lyrics and subject matter, he can also get repetitive quickly, he's not particularly inventive.
Here is my copy if anyone wants it:

I'll refund $1 to anyone who buys it if you mention you're a member of this board in the checkout.

I second this....this album is awful, and a huge letdown, esp. "Lock Shit Down w. Kweli"....and the video is awful. Shits gonna flop.

i think those of you hating on this album are smoking crack. some of the songs are little more pop, like 'lock shit down,' but it's still better than most stuff being released.
PEEP "SO CRAZY" - SUPER good song, and some of y'all so crazy...

Better than most stuff being released? I suppose if you compare it to garbage like that Laffy Taffy song or autotune rap.
Compared to quality hip hop, this album is a huge disappointment and mediocre at best. IMO, it's a waste of 2na's talent. I really don't know what he was thinking. The beats are weak, the verses dumbed down in terms of subject matter and technicality, and the choruses/hooks sound either tossed off or forced, depending on the song.
I know some people will eat this album up anyway, but I'm not going to force myself to listen to something that is not good.

for anyone out there who likes tuna, you need to check this album out - good lyrics. sometimes not mindblowing, true, some of the beats not mindblowing, true, but the album overall is very good. for those who think it's 'garbage' - keep 'callin it like it is' and hittin your pipe.

With this album, I learned I like Chali 2na a bit more in smaller doses with Jurassic 5. He does have a pretty ill rhyme style and when he rips it, he rips it right. But when he tries to do his slow flow, he falls flat IMO. He's also not that great with hooks or changing up his style too much. There were definitely some bangers when he stayed true to his normal style, but that only makes you realize he only has the one very good style. The production was nice, but could have been better and didn't really make the album more cohesive.
My rating: 3.5 stars

Co-friggin' sign. That's his problem and MAYBE it's because we've always heard him in a group/collab dynamic. IMO he works better that way. As an emcee he's bonkers and can hold his own, but a full LP is just too much. A 12" here a cut there, dope, but a full LP is just too much with no change ups.
