It is DEFINITELY experimental. I am a very big fan of Eyedea, and this album is pretty disappointing to me. I don't want to discourage anyone from buying/checking it out, but it's pretty EMO. I've actually only listened to about 1 minute of each song, which is depressing because I had imagined I would listen to it start to finish when I got it. It's basically a mix between hip-hop and his band Carbon Carousel - yikes!

I have to agree with hungry0ne, and that's almost painful to say. Eyedea was that dude 2004 and before IMO. One of my favorite artists and he was my favorite MN rapper for a while. His side projects have lacked though. Face Candy and Carbon Carousel (heard both multiple times) both sucked hard. Was not into it whatsoever. This new album has Eyedea's guitar playing on every track. And coming from a classic rock/alt rock/blues aficionado (as well as hip-hop), Eyedea is NOT a good guitar player. I saw E&A at Sound Set '09. The old songs were tight. The new songs sucked for lack of a better term (they certainly did not appeal to me). Dude can still rap, but he's completely lost on the hooks and choruses. Look at any of his guest appearances in the past few years.
Sadly, E&A may have seen the end of their open spots in my CD case.

Dig, don't get me wrong. There are parts of some of the new songs I like. Like the rapping for instance. Dude can spit. But certain parts are ruined by poorly played metal guitar and jarringly wack screaming. I have not heard nearly the whole album, but I plan to.

hahaha. i agree, after giving it a good listen, it isnt what i thought. the first time around i was busy updated some papers and random shit so i didnt give it a true listen. things i liked did catch my ear, but yeah, its not really my thing. i have never been into eyedea much in recent or more than recent times. saw him tour oliver hart i believe, ang got into him more then also after hearing first born. seen him tour a few times hes that dude i liked for a second, so i got all his stuff (minus the wack side project shit - i saw sometihng he did live as a side-group and it was stright horrible shit., but anyway, i really never caught on to the dude and he has yet to also impress me in recent years.
oh well. in one ear out the other with this one.

The new Toki Wright is dope. Been waiting for an LP from him for a while. Still haven't checked out this E&A, though. Kind of don't want to be dissapointed.
EDIT: Alright, fuck it, I got the E&A. If the rest is anything like this first song, I think I might actually dig it. A lot.

Yeah, I'm right there with you, dig. I remember when Eyedea did his FIRST Carbon Carousel show in Minneapolis. Nobody knew what the hell it was. Nobody knew dude went with the whole indy rock thing. It just said Carbon Carousel featuring Eyedea (which was in big print). I and many others went to see a hip-hop show, but got this avante garde emo spoken word poetry indy rock mix. Then he just spiraled off into all sorts of weird directions. I'm not convinced he's better, but I'll give the new LP a open listen. The live cuts weren't great though.
I have not checked out the Sandpeople EP yet. I will check it out. I did watch the DVD. Thanks for that man. The whole package was tight. I'll let you know when I burn that Sandpeople and what I think of it. Just been busy lately, but it's like 95° out today and humid as fuck, so I should be staying in, and :p

its not bad... its just something i would classify as more "abstract" hiphop. shit i would classify a lot of anticon artist in. i like the music and creativity they got going on. plus usually their are decent flows on top of that. but having a crowd of ladies over, i most likely wouldnt bump sole, sage or e&a....thats just me thou. but on a six hour road trip with justy me and maybe one other head, this "abstract" style of hiphop is fully bumpable in my ride. the new e&a....actually all e&a is this way for me maybe minus a few songs.
this is better than the side project crap....

Yeah, the "abstract" hip-hop is not my thing nowadays. I was all about it when Anticon & Def Jux were poppin', but I guess I've grown out of it for a more soulful sound that's easier on the ears...lmao...not entirely, I do like everything, but I may be getting old...lol.
So you'd play Sole, Sage, or E&A for females? You must know some different thinking females. lol

LMAO - i thought i said i would NOT bump the anticon roster with the ladies...hahahaha, the ladies i like - like the dirty "radio" music - without the radio edit.
yo al - i am going to be in the chicago/indiana area from july 15 -25th. i am down to make a drive if need be....so any good hip hop shows in the midwest as in your area to chicago - around that time? whats up with a big jess show? you hear blame one is retiring - his last show is in SD this weekend. might go and check it out, been meaning to kick in the SD area lately.
i have gotten over the "abrast sound" too for the most part, but still spin it from time to time to keep up with it. but maybe it is age, but i too like the more laid back mellow jams. :p that type of shit.

fuck ya... i did that in downtown chi a few years back if not a little longer. shit was great. cant really remember, but i think the bars either never closed or closed out at 4am. it beats CA where shit closes at 2am....and if your in a yeppy town/ newer town in so cal, they try to shut the city down at midnight...nor let a bunch of clubs and music venues go up....lame! fuck that, i like rukus to take place at night.
i might be missing ur appearence in chi town by one day.... if thats the case, i'll leave a present for you...
besides the wack whether of being (most of the time) either too hot or too cold and with no mountains to snowboard - chicago is a fun place to visit. i dig on their italian beef sandwiches. how come people cant make shit like that elsewhere?
also just got back from a trip to hawaii as well. now that trip was ill

It's really quite sad. I can't say I liked anything about this album...even his rapping for the most part bored me and seemed uninspired. And the production was mostly bad IMO. This is the sound of Eyedea maturing. Not a good look IMO!

I guess I'm too busy measuring it against other E&A/Eyedea albums. I just don't like the change, the new vibes, Eyedea's guitar playing, the screaming, the seriousness, the hooks, the choruses, etc. Eyedea was one of my favorites, and I just don't like the fact he is maturing (which feels forced to me) without really settling into his hip-hop persona more. The dude has never released two albums that sound the same. First Born, Oliver Hart, E&A...all different vibes. He was still finding himself. I have just been hoping he'd expand on that style and eventually perfect it instead of inducing the E&A album full of vibes that he used on the Face Candy & Carbon Carousel records. Just saying, if I want to hear something like this, I'd listen to a rock/metal vocalist, and somebody who can actually play guitar well. I won't say it's bad, but I personally cannot see the good in it.

Exactly! Same thing at Sound Set '09.
And to be honest, the crowd loved the old E&A material. But they were absolutely hating the new shit.
I have not been able to make it through a full 3rd listen. And the shit is only like 30 minutes long.

LOL!!! If E&A actually headlined a show in 2009 that Atmosphere was playing at, nobody would have stayed for their set. It would have been a good excuse for cats to get home early and catch Colbert. I've yet to hear from any friends of mine here from Minneapolis that like Eyedea's new material...and they used to be big fans of the old.
