FEATURED ITEM OF THE WEEK:

Busdriver - Jhelli Beam CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17408
Busdriver is back a healthy three years after RoadKillOvercoat! It
was easily one of my favorite albums of 2006, but I do recall some
fans calling it a little too weird even for Busdriver! Of course,
most of that kind of talk was isolated and the album was well
reviewed, and I am happy to say that Jhelli Beam is a welcome return
to his familiar breath-defying flows and humor. Busdriver's not out
to re-define underground hip hop, as reviewers on the outside looking
in would lead you to believe, no, Busdriver is just doing what he
does best, and that is expressing himself through the music that just
so happens to be hip hop and I wouldn't have it any other way. He
even pokes fun at the labels he is often given as an "art-rapper" or
"hipster rap", and that kind of awareness of how ridiculous some of
the praise he has received by people who would otherwise never give
the rest of hip hop a chance outside of his bizarreness is a
wonderful inside joke that the listener is in on. Featuring
production by Nobody, Daedelus and Omid with guest appearances by
Nocando and Myka 9!

NEW RELEASES:

Ancient Astronauts - We Are To Answer CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17498
DJ/producing duo Dogu and Kabanjak (previously produced tracks for
Ladybug Mecca and Zion I) out of Cologne, Germany form Ancient
Astronauts for their debut album We Are To Answer. This is yet
another successful foray into the overseas market trying to connect
with American hip hop audiences, as displayed more recently by Dela,
N.A.S.A., and DJ Brasco to name a few, as it features collaborations
with DJ Zeph and Azeem, Raashan Ahmad and The Pharcyde as well as
some impressive lesser known international names. Quite often you'll
hear that the hip hop scenes in other countries are thriving, as
veterans and legends from hip hop's best days tour the globe and find
that they are greeted like Gods in places like Europe! Not always the
case here in the states, and overall that's pretty pathetic to say
the least...but aside from the faithful audiences worldwide, there is
also plenty of untapped talent. The label Switchstance Recordings is
known mostly in the club scenes but for their funkier collective of
DJ's, but if one thing is certain it is that Ancient Astronauts offer
us proof of the existence of the universal language of hip hop as
they understand it so well on this expertly crafted album.

AndrRomak - Beauty is but skin deep CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17635
A meeting of two minds, one from Canada and the other from France,
featuring Andrre on vocals and musical arrangements and Roma on the
majority of the beats to form AndrRomak. Beauty is but skin deep is a
deeply emotional album and released on Portland, Maine, label Milled
Pavement Records, as owner Moshe has been open to the worldwide stage
of indie hip hop artists of a different kind. Think Josh Martinez if
he focused a little more of his raspiness on singing over
melodramatic beats with lots of piano and violins.

AZ - GOD: Gold Oil & Diamonds CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17290
Due to scheduling conflicts with another label and close similarities
in the album names...Sicness.net is proud to present AZ's second
album of the summer G.O.D. (Gold, Oil & Diamonds) which was
previously titled I Am Legend. Just last week we saw the release of
Legendary and longtime fans will see this as just icing to the cake
that is AZ's long and ever growing discography.

Ceschi - Same Old Love Song 12"
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17605
Limited Edition 12" Picture Disc from Ceschi! A new album can't be
far off now! "Same Old Love Song" features guest appearances by Awol
One and 2Mex, this single also comes with three remixes, the
original's instrumental, as well as the bonus track "Objects Are
Falling" along with its instrumental too!

Deeskee & Escape Artists - For the Birds (picture disk) 10"
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17269
Next up while on the subject of limited edition picture disks, the
long awaited Deeskee & Escape Artists 10"! Ooh That's Heavy is the
go-to label for pressing up these kinds of picture disks, most
recently they put out the Lab Waste seven inch! Four tracks all
produced by Deeskee with guest appearances by Awol One and 2Mex (they
really get around don't they?), Radioinactive, Jizzm High Definition
aka All Deadly HDMC, with additional instrumentation by Ikey Owens of
the Mars Volta! HEAT!

DJ Quik & Kurupt - BlaQKout CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17497
For over fifteen years DJ Quik has produced for some of rap's most
recognizable artists including 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Jay Z and
Jermain Dupri. Blaqkout pairs Quick with another West Coast legend,
Tha Dogg Pound's Kurupt. Kurupt had an open mind about Quik's
production here, which is still rooted in West Coast Gangsta and Funk
Rhythms but also contains a few more experimental tracks that he
wouldn't have been able to try with his work on Snoop's Ego Trippin.
For example "Hey Playa! (Moroccan Blues)" features a sample the
producer heard while watching Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmerman on
the Travel Channel, and "Jupiter's Critic And The Mind Of Mars" is a
throwback to early 80's West Coast Rap, kind of cosmic and electro
b-boy boogie-ish in the spirit of Arabian Prince. Longtime fans won't
want to miss out.

The Grouch & Eligh - Say G&E! (import) 12" EP WITH FREE 7-INCH RECORD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17488
You knew it had to be thanks to Hip Hop Vinyl and nobody else didn't
you?! The German label has compiled eight select tracks from the
album to form the Say G&E 12" EP! It used to be that we hardly ever
saw Legends vinyl coming out but now all that has changed! And as an
added bonus, we are now offering the limited 7" that came with the
sales of the first 100 Say G&E CDs! So..that's two extra tracks to
complete almost the full length of the album on vinyl, one of which
is a non-album cut!

James Pants - Cosmic Rapp 12"
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17469
Holding us over before the release of James Pants' upcoming yet-to-be-
named album, Stones Throw presents this six-track release featuring
Los Angeles legend Egyptian Lover remixing "Cosmic Rapp" off of
2008's Welcome. Egypt transforms the composition into an uptempo
electro jam, perfect for freakaholics everywhere. Also, includes
brand new James Pants material previously unavailable.

Johnson&Jonson - The Only Way 12"
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17612
Second single off of Blu and Mainframe's Johnson & Jonson on Tres
Records! This is an album that slowly gained momentum once people
caught on that it was Blu...yes, the Blu from Below The Heavens. Some
people are still in the dark about this one and are still trying to
get their hands on the aforementioned release with Exile which is now
out of print. This wonderful 12" follow up features two more tracks
off the Johnson and Jonson album including the instrumentals for "The
Only Way" and "Half A Knot" plus the bonus beat "Look." GO!

LEIF(kolt) - Dead Is The New Rich CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17662
Follow up album to local San Diego artist LEIF(kolt)'s Spiders and
Widows from 2007. Dead Is The New Rich features some considerable
growth both production wise and lyrically as these tough economic
times call for new action. You'll find political topics disguised and
kind of a bouncier, more melodic West Coast flow in contrast to the
sporadic styles on the previous album.

Moka Only - Airport 3 CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17606
As an artist and producer never satisfied with slowing down or taking
breaks, Canadian MC Moka Only presents another project fully produced
by the emcee himself with 20 tracks of brand new material including a
track with Bootie Brown of The Pharcyde for the third part in his
Airport series. And coming next week another album new as of this
year (though released earlier in Canada)...Carrots and Eggs!

Mos Def - The Ecstatic CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=16426
While hip hop star Mos Def was somewhat open about his last album Tru
Magic being an obligation to release him from his contract with
Geffen, there was almost no promotion behind it and reviews were
mixed, you almost got the feeling that he didn't intend for it to be
anything special, which kind of left fans with a bad taste in their
mouths. But in the music business and not just hip hop, we hear about
things like that happening, and so on a certain level I do side with
Mos Def and to be honest there were still a few decent cuts on that
album. But how do you bounce back from that? Well, for starters, you
find a new label that is less concerned with sales and more
interested in artistry, and second...tap the underground from which
you came from for some much needed help in production (to distance
yourself from the Neptunes and Kanye) and recruit and trust in the
likes of Madlib, Oh No and Georgia Ann Muldrow! Featuring guest
appearances by Talib Kweli, Slick Rick and Ms. Muldrow herself along
with production from longtime collaborator DJ Preservation and a beat
by the late J-Dilla.

Mr. SOS - How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17611
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is the limited-
edition pressing of Mr. SOS' brand new album inspired by the Stanley
Kubrick film of the same (or alternate) name of Dr. Strangelove. The
former CunninLynguists member, takes an imaginatively introspective
look at how humanity copes with the cycle of industrialization and
alienation in a modern society. Features production by Tonedeff,
Quincey Tones, The BeatChefs, and guest appearances by Cashmere The
PRO, Zero Basement (Chapter 13), and soul-vocalist, Steph.

Oddisee - Mental Liberation 12" EP
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17466
Now on vinyl! The EP version of producer/emcee Oddisee's Mental
Liberation, compiling eight tracks with guest appearances by
Invincible, Finale, Black Milk, Declaime, Prince Po, LMNO, J-Live,
Big Pooh and Kenn Starr!

Remy LeBeau - Back To Normal 7"
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17610
New artist with a new 7" in a full color picture sleeve! Dark and
deep instrumentals plus a hip hop track featuring Distrakt. The heavy
bass and textured layers bring to mind a combination of RZA, Flying
Lotus, Madlib, and Geoff Barrow of Portishead...

The Revolution - Revolution CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17322
The Revolution was born from an idea of marrying the extraordinary
skills and talent of the cream of Cuba's young musicians with the
know-how and worldly perspective of cutting edge producers from the
UK and the US. The results can be heard on every song of the album,
two from each of six producers, all bringing different spins on
contemporary styles. Featuring Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim), Guy
Sigsworth (Bjork producer), Marius De Vries (Bjork, Massive Attack
producer) and Cameron McVey and Jan 'Stan' (Massive Attack,
Portishead producers) and Rich File (Unkle), with guest vocals by a
Poet Name Life, Lateef the Truth Speaker and former Moloko singer
Roisin Murphy.

Scienz of Life - Leviathan-Break the Spell CD/2LP
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17422
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17423
Taken from the album's intro...this pretty much sums it up: "We are
living in a time now where more than ever the truth is being
concealed on many levels. Have you ever asked yourself why Chris
Brown and Rihanna are getting more media coverage than the true
details about the worlds falling economy? Or why when you turn on the
news all you hear about is sex, wealth and death. Why do most rappers
in the mainstream industry today feel as if they have to spread
falsehoods in order to stay relevant? Or even why is it not possible
for us to think outside of anything being a person place or a thing?
If you are tired of legends, myths, fables and fairy tales and want
the Facts beyond any doubt, then you must be ready to listen with an
open heart and mind. Fear no longer Scienz of Life come to you as the
Hip Hop Reformers of this day and time and are here to 'Break The
Spell of The Leviathan' for it has entrapped your divine potentials
and imprisoned your souls in ignorance for far too long. WAKE UP!"
Thanks to Lil Sci aka John Robinson's rising popularity as a solo
artist he was once again able to bring us a brand new Scienz Of Life
album with producer ID4Windz minus Inspector Willabe unfortunately.
But nevertheless, we can also thank Project Mooncircle and Hip Hop
Vinyl for blessing us with this return of one of the most slept on
groups to emerge from the late 90's underground...and it's been a
long road!

Toki Wright - A Different Mirror CD WITH FREE POSTER
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17407
Toki Wright is not only a well established emcee but one of the
hardest working community activists in the Twin Cities area. With
numerous accolades and best known as opening act and hypeman for
Brother Ali, Toki has toured from New York to Uganda. His hard work
has paid off, from releasing CDR he sold on tour called Meal Plan, to
a full blown deal with Rhymesayers! A Different Mirror features
Brother Ali, Scarub (Living Legends), I Self Devine, Felipe Cuauhtli
(Los Nativos), St. Paul Slim & Trama.

Twin Perils - Dark Alliance CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17643
Holographic Pagoda Recordings presents J.U.N.E. Marx and the Lone
Ninja as the form to create Twin Perils on their Dark Alliance album.
From the moment I heard this I thought of Billy Woodz and Super Chron
Flight Brothers, but it also reminded me of a sound that could only
come from that last late 90's rush and effort from underground
artists struggling to not let Hip Hop turn into what it would
inevitably become in the mainstream...pop music. This is reminiscent
of Killarmy and the type of raw stuff hip hop artists used to care
about. Militant, streetwise lyrics and realness.

Lone Ninja - Covert Operative CD EP
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17644
Next up from one half of Twin Perils on Holographic Pagoda Recordings
is Lone Ninja's Covert Operative EP. Full of that late 90's
underground thump Wu-affiliate style content (lotsa old movie
samples) and very much aimed at fans of Backwoodz Studio and Uncommon
Records.

Unagi - Reinventing the Eel CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17519
Rising producer Unagi (which means Eel in Japanese) drops his latest
release Reinventing The Eel! His last project, the You and Eye EP,
paired him with Chicago emcee Infinito, and introduced us to his
signature throw back funk and soul inspired boom bap! Here we get
that sound and more, with instrumentals and guest appearances by
Motion Man, Infinito, Eddie Meeks and more.

Vik44 - Was Never White CD
http://www.accesshiphop.com/store/?itemid=17634
Also this week from Portland, Maine's Milled Pavement Records is
Vik44's Was Never White. Having a hard time sticking with one sound,
Vik44 moves from genre to genre. From minimal techno, glitched breaks
to trip-hop he feels at home withe the music he creates as it is the
only thing that keeps his racing mind at a slower pace. For Vik,
music is an addiction and a big part of his lifestyle. In college the
aspiring producer played guitar for a metal band and even began
experimenting with drum machines, playing other instruments and
sampling. Short like an EP at only nine tracks, but each very
generous in length and each boasting a different genre, as it is
grounded mostly in electronica, there's ambient, heavy techno, hip
hop and dark house for good measure.
