what ten artists would you induct first and why....well, let's just say that herc, bambatta, caz, flash, and sugar hill have already been inducted-those are obvious. they don't all have to be from the 70's and 80's...just people/groups who have made the biggest impacts in hip hop.
i've got a lot of picks but i've got to think about it and narrow it down. peace.

yeah, that's cool and all...and i can pretty much guess why you picked all these people. i was also looking for folks who haven't neccesarily been around as long as these folks. all these cats premiered in the 80's.
like, i would say wu because they pretty much came out with something that was so different than everything else that was getting play at the time and they single-handedly (err....multi-handedly??) changed the game.

Spearman...don't you think by naming this thread the way you did and opening up like this you made it pretty vague?...why don't we just submit our own lists and thoughts...just my 2 cents. Its not as though there should be any right or wrong answer if you ask if it was up to you or I or anyone else...just our opinions either way.
and not say stuff like...

most heads on this page are probably pretty familiar with the history of hip hop. it all came from somewhere. depending on your location, you might favor certain artists more than others, but in the end, plenty of early MCs in all areas set trends, styles, and movements, but every MC took it from somewhere, just like the blues..
Kool Herc
Bambaata
Run DMC
Beastie Boys
Grandmaster Flash
DXT
Kool Moe Dee
LL Cool J

Couldn't agree more. Talk about premature, them dudes aint really done anything to warrant that kind of claim. Busdriver is cool, but why anyone like's Sage will forever boggle the mind.

funny how yall laugh at those two but apparently agree with the nod to KANYE WEST among other crappy rappers listed based (as far as i can tell) on record sales solely.
in any event i knew that was coming, and this is why i included them
i was also looking for folks who haven't neccesarily been around as long as these folks.
so i included on my list two guys that i think are far from "up and coming," each of those guys having a respectable body of work behind them (in size and quality) and yet are still "newer." i also think their both innovators -- sage's spoken word roots definitely influence his style and content, but he's constantly evolving (if you havent listened to his latest "human the death dance" youre crazy); and busdriver just straight up does shit that no one else can even come close to doing (nu skool or old skool). both are innovative (Said that already) and influential. so dont hate.
i guess i could have listed the same 10 everyone else did, but whats the fun in that?

I think of Sage as more of a poet than a good lyricist, I know they are fairly similar, but he just has more of a poetic edge than a hard rugged flow. Nothin wrong with that though, I like Sage a lot.

Like him or not, Kanye has had a huge influence on Hip Hop. A lot of people bite his style, especialy on the beats...

Why not? I would not hate on that. He's a big part of Hip Hop history. The Bad Boy vs Death Row shit, he found B.I.G, he's done some classic joints with B.I.G, did most of B.I.G's production. Why should he not get a spot? lol
I'm not a fan, but if he got a spot, I could see why and I would not hate on it...

...as a matter of fact, give me ONE good reason why Sage or Busdriver should get a spot before Puffy. What the fuck have Sage or Busdriver done to get a spot in the Hip Hop hall of fame over Puffy? Puffy has done a hell of lot more in the game than both them mutha fuckers comined ever will. I'm not hating on Sage or Busdriver, that's just the facts of the matter.

well...if you asked me what movie should win best picture at the oscars, i would pick a small, low budget movie that is really good over a mediocre blockbuster.
but BIG aside, i look at kanye's and diddy's list of accomplishments and, well...sure they have done a lot and have clearly been influential, but i can think of exactly 2 songs between the two of them that i can listen to, production credits included.
anyways, you totally cheated at this game, you put down like 80 names...
and honestly, id pick outkast, digital underground or atmosphere over sage, bus, piddy and kanye for top 10, first round draft hall of fame picks.

if you appreciate the effect dj's have had on the culture then grand wizard theodore should be near the top of the dj list. he invented scratching.
