If you haven't already check out The Detroit Expieremnet and the Philadelphia Exp. as well.
Ropeadope releases. Never half steppin, on point as always.
Check it out. The Detroit is a little more uptempo, theres a SICK Clavinet player featured on a few tracks that gave me butterflies in my stomach, for real.
The Philly is a little more chamber-ish... downtempo. Questlove is the drummer.
Peep it out. Ropeadope.com
haven't checked the Philly Experiment, but the Detroit Ex is pretty good. Good variety, but some sections of it make me forget i'm listening to a cd, and i start thinking the radio's on some elevator music station.. then i realize "oh, it's the cd." but yeah, dope shit considering it was one of those "blind" buys. hey, i liked the cover.

Theres really only one or two elvator-ish, whispy tracks on there though (i do not like that stuff at all).... the rest is fresh. IMO.
Check the Philly.

philly ex been out for years now, that's a good one. a little simple, they don't really GET DOWN on it, but it's dope. i'll peep that new one.

I know.... it's more or less just warmth. But yeah... thats one thing i was a little irked about. On certain songs it's like basically a 5 minute breakdown or something, but that shit is different and i like it.
Regardless i recommend both.

do you know of any releases that are similar to this, but have more of a jazz and hip hop feel, rather than the kinda breakbeat techno-ish stuff. i'm lookin for somethin that has a lot of saxaphone, some piano, and other instruments over a hip hop style beat. any ideas?

Um... this shit doesn't have a "techno" feel whatsoever. What gave you that idea? It's all live instrumentation (think Jazzmatazz......)..........
Try Mushroom Jazz.... or any Blue Note compilations if your looking for instrumentation over a "hiphop style" beat. Jazz Chillout (blue note) is a good start.

i knew you were going to say that. i don't know how to explain it, but the drums just don't sound right. by techo-ish sound, i meant they reminded me of it, not that they sounded totally like it.
but no, the drums on the philly project are not live, i know that much.

The Detroit Experiment doesn't sound like techno at all. If techno and jazz were on opposite ends of a musical spectrum, this lp would definitely lie somewhere on the jazz side. there's a few electronic effects and a couple uptempo tracks, but that's it. The producer is known as a techno dj/producer, but this is not techno at all. not even a close relative. I think half of the drums are live.. some of them were added later in the mix.
I'd suggest Naked Music NYC's first lp "What's on Your Mind?" but that's mainly vocal tracks. Others have suggested K&D, MM&W, and Jazzanova. I dunno. I guess you could check for anything on the Acid Jazz, Mo'Wax, Luv N Haight or Giant Steps labels, but a lot of this stuff is real real boring... or very good for taking stoned naps to.

Are you kidding me? You don't know who Questlove is?
He's the DRUMMER from the Roots homeboy, i promise you, it's a live drumset. read your liner notes.
Just to re-iterate.

like i said before.. i haven't heard the philly exp, but i have heard the detroit exp. and the drums sound half and half. originally played live, but remixed in postproduction with some drum tracks being added in.

Eggzachary. All though some tracks are strictly live drums.

philly experiment only sounds like that because they overproduce live music nowadays. it's far too processed - i agree with that - but it's not electronic drumming by any means at all. it's all quest love on the traps, he's a sick fuckin' drummer.
maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but in 1993 Greg Osby (one of the top players on the NYC Jazz scene) released a hip hop album with some MCs and hip hop beats, and he plays instruments all over it. it's a fresh album but it's not current sounding hip hop.
another one (and a rare one at that) is the Blue Note New Groove Remix project, which is basically a bunch of blue note classics remixed by hip hop and jungle producers with MCs. The best song on the album is Gift of Gab produced by the Angel (a female producer). Angel kicks off the beat hip hop tempo with the original pianos from the song being remixed, gab raps over that, then she breaks it down to a nice live-sounding atmospheric dnb track, and then back to the hip hop tempo with some changes in the samples and gab busts again. it's an amazing song, i've been looking for the wax for 5 years.

I got that Blue Note remix album... it's dope. There's three different mixes of Mixed Feelings on there, Kofi is a dope song too. Yo Gunther how rare is this shit? Because I got mine when it dropped- wasn't even spinning yet back then but couldn't pass it up- and since then I've heard a couple people talk about it being VERY tough to find.
Yo that Philly Experiment is great... to fall asleep to. Yall should go pick up some Coltrane records instead.

The Spearhead and Lonnie Smith track is DOPE!
Blue Note can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes. The roster of material thats released on Blue Note is just to dope and expansive.
Especially all the compilations.

twisted harmonix - that greg osby album is called "3-D Lifestyles". and i might kick a little self promotion to you, you may dig what i made. i did an EP from 99-01 that's all instrumental tracks and about 90% of it is made with jazz music but it's hip hop instrumentals sort of i guess. check it out you might dig it. it's Gunther B. "Dissonance" and I'm not 100% sure on where to get it. Check here at Access, I think they may still have some. Otherwise, check with www.belowsurface.com. i don't have anymore or else i'd sell you one direct.
IPatch - damn homie, that's like kickin' a fool in the nuts telling me you got that wax! is there anything you'd up it for at ALL? It's pretty rare, you're one of maybe 2 people i've ever talked to in my life who has it. I almost got a sealed copy for 30 bucks a few months back but i was a day late and a dollar short. I'll beat somebody up to get that shit haha. Let me know if there's anyway you'll trade it. guntherb@freshsites.com
And pretty much anything on Ninja Tune from the first half of the 90s is jazz-infused hip hop beats. Definitely check out that shit. Differenz, Hedfunk, 9 Lazy 9 (super mellow dope shit), London Funk Allstars, etc.. Peace y'all.

Nah I think I'm gonna hold on to that one for a while... how did you almost find a NEW one for $30?
Has anybody heard the upcoming Madlib album yet? It's coming out on Blue Note, and I guess he either re-does or samples all Blue Note joints... I think he only does the YNQ thing on one track, which is cool by me.

YNQ?????????
gunther b
05-21-2003, 06:03 PM
YNQ = Yesterday's New Quintet - i wasn't all that impressed with this, but mainly because i know that fool could have done it better. he's really dope on the hip hop beats though. i wanna hear his new shit.
i almost got that record, IPatch, by asking some bigtimer diggers. this one cat got back to me saying he just saw it somewhere (in a fellow digger's trade crate or something) and that he could probably get it for 30 bucks but when he got back to me, it was gone. that was a sad fuckin' day. i'veeven emailed blue note like 3 times trying to get them to up one from their hidden stash of back stock haha. no dice. i'll keep lookin'....
peace
YNQ is cool. I dig it, but Madlib is just WEAK on the keys, i'm sorry.... certain gems on all the YNQ albums, but i noticed i feel the songs that have more of a production value to them. When Madlib trys to play melodies (like on the Rhoades he uses CONSTANTLY on the Angles album) it just sounds weak. Thats just me though....
IMHO.
