Yeah, by far. This album is really good. I'm not a huge 9th fan either. I mean I respect the dude but it seemed in the past like he had more quantity than quality. Not on this album though.

I'm not pro-fruity loops in any way. But you can make good stuff with anything if you have good taste, are creative and are at least semi-talented. That being said I do not particularly enjoy 9th Wonders production.

he does, according to this months issue of scratch

I think he could afford some better equipment now. And he never used just fruity loops anyway. Fruity Loops was one small part of how dude makes music.

i gurgle oral smoothies.
:o
it really has nothing to do with what he can afford. i'd guarantee he still uses fl studio. it's more about a comfort factor when making tracks... you want to feel and know your program up and down, and it'd take a big change in thinking to go from something you really know to something brand new when youre already doing well with what you got
fl has quite a bit of options that most don't know about... and even though I didn't like it at first, is a fairly powerful and good program.
with that being said, I thought merchant of dreams 2 was just an average album really. i've listened to it a few times now, and only 3-4 of them stand out to me. a lot of the time his drums don't seem to be in sequence fully with his samples too.... I notice it a lot more with the non-little brother tracks he's done. I noticed it a lot on this album

true, i messed with it for a couple years and still was at the tip of the iceberg as far as what the program was capable of. its quite ill and takes time to master. but no matter what you're never going to get the freedom and organic feeling that you would with a mpc. thats why he uses a lot of samples, to try to put that natural undigitized sound back into it... and a lot of times it just doesn't integrate as well.

He absolutely does still use it. Saw a pretty recent interview...

You know it's funny Lon, cause if you use Fruityloops then you know it's kind of hard to make things out of time. It's in a consistent quantization using the sequencing tables so you would have to go out of your way to make things out of time. Never understood that about him...

True and maybe, but maybe not. There are plenty of producers that I know that sample and get their drums to sound "cohesive" with the sample, and don't use an MPC. Even I do my drums strange... I don't use a drum machine or fruity loops type program for drums (I use fruity loops for my VST plugins)... but I chop my sample in acid, and make my drums manually in acid with an extremely large database of one shot drums that most people import into drum machines. I've yet to meet anyone else that chops raw drums like a sample (without using an mpc).
I've been waiting for years to hear what 9th would sound like without a sample, but I don't think it'll ever happen. The structure he uses is easy, people like it, and he can bang out a great amount tracks a day. I wouldn't be surprised if he could do 2-3 beats an hour on an average... he just never switches anything up.. lol
I still respect and like most his work though. He makes pretty good music

Yeah... so true. Never really understood that either
