It's pretty obvious the record execs messed up with the whole digital music thing and now it's coming back to haunt them. record sales way down...digital downloads and ringtones way up. What do you think needs to be done to survive in the digital industry now?

They need to bring back the "Black Moon" chorus. If every song had a chorus consisting of a single word or phrase shouted by 5 or more people every two bars the music industry would survive.

I wonder what hip hop was like when our parent or grandparents were kids. I bet it was crazy.

This seems like an essay question for a class or soemthing.
The labels need to first...stop charging so fucking much for a CD, secondly they need to think of clever marketing schemes that will make people buy physical CDs. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on which side you take) sales of physical CDs are way down and the only people that are buying physical CDs are either: a) people who don't have access to digitally d/l music, and even then they are buying bootlegs or b) people who are real music fans and collectors, people who like to have physical artwork and something tangible. ...and, yes digital sales are up from what they were in the beginning, but they are not huuuuuuuge numbers..look at the soundscan numbers..TI sold just under gold in his first week...which is good and includes digital sales, but for the past few weeks/months the top spot on the soundscan charts have been some pretty low numbers...by industry standards, but maybe in a way it's good. Back in the day...going gold was an accomplishment..now it's not shit..now you have to be at least double platinum...but with sales not being as high maybe people will look at going gold as more of a milestone???
either way, all labels major or independent are fucking with digital sales, smaller labels are going through aggregators to gwet their music distributed digitally and majors have direct deals with the digital outlets..now with Amazon getting into the game sales may get boosted up, but by far iTunes is the most used digital service. Universal is negotiating with Apple right now to try to get better terms, which I think will set a precedent within the industry that Apple can't have all of the control..granted Universal is a fucking beast of a machine, but who knows?
anyway..that's my 2 cents
