Have any of you heard Sage Francis' Personal Journals? Its one of the best, if not the best cd I've listened to. I don't know how I can describe it, but I can assure you that If you buy it, you won't be dissappointed. Man, just so many metaphors, so much symbolism, cool flow, cool voice. Sage reminds me of Slug, but with more of an underlying and connecting theme throughout his songs.

So yeah, good CD, check it out.

Peace

I think I've got a pretty strong arsenal of CDs, and PJ is pretty much at the top of what I own. And unlesss I've listened to every CD every made, I can't really say for sure that this is the best ever, but from what I've heard, it's pretty damn good.

I guess what I mean by one of the best ever is that I haven't owned a CD that has received as much playing time in my diskman as much as Sage's.

What makes the CD stand out is the fact that he makes something usefull out of all the songs. There are other mcs who use complex metaphors and use some pretty deep material, but they just kind of throw it out there; they just plop it in the song. To single out a couple Legends, I think Eligh and Scarub are perfect examples. Now don't get me wrong -- these two are both top notch MCs (I'd even go as far to say that Eligh is one of my favorite), and they both deal with complex lyrics and deep, moving metaphors/messages. But their songs seem like a smorgasbord of different ideas, as if a painter had the best colors in the world and just threw it onto a canvas. But on PJ, the artist paints beautiful picture with the same paint.

What I'm trying to say is, that I like this CD because the songs are actually about something, the cd is linked with recurring themes, and it is all beautifully orchestrated with sages complex word play, irresistable flow, and complemented with his corrageous wit.

Now I'd also like to say that Eligh and Scarub have many songs that fit into that description, but neither have yet to produce an album (and I own most, but not all of them) that meet my requirements to be considered one of the best. I also understand that every artist has his own style, and that is most likely the case here, but I guess that Sage's style just clicks with my view of good music.

So yeah I don't mean to make a sweeping generalization here, or to offend anyone, but I feel that Personal Journals is worthy of the title of "one of, or quite possibly the best cd i've heard."

Peace

well..to each his own..
but id still say you have ALOT to listen to, in regards to hiphop..

btw..none of the legends have ever made an album that i would consider 'the best cd ive heard'..

I agree, because there are just so many good artists out there, I believe that despite my heavy library, I have only scratched the surface. But I also think that statement applies to everybody, and I feel I've listened to enough hiphop to make a fair judgement that satisfies me. What I consider one of the best may not be seen the same way by somebody else, but it shouldn't matter, because music is based exclusively on opinions.

It's unfair to assume that I don't have much hiphop experience simply because my top-3 doesn't match yours, but you would be correct to say that I haven't listened to enough, because I can never get enough of it (and neither can you!).
