Just like the thread title says, post how and when underground/ alternative rap captured you and made you into a fan/ follower.
-It wasn't too long ago, probably a little less than 2 years ago when the feel good inc. single from gorillaz came out, which got me into gorillaz. This lead to me hearing Del's guest appearance on Clint Eastwood, his unique and fun flow captured me, and then it just exploded from there. Still have a lot to learn about the genre though.

I bought Jurassic 5's "Quality Control" and loved it. Then I wanted to listen to a bunch of similar artists, and that led me to a lot of my favorite artists today.

also alot of radio played or air'd music is trash & dose not need to be onthe air waves.
my biggest or most fav MC's/Rappers are
Aesop Rock
Ugly Duckling
Pep Love

I wouldnt consider hieroglyphics "underground" they were all on labels and are now independent.. third eye vision has sold 200, 000 + more than a lot of major label releases...

I guess it's when you start shit talking commercial rap is when you can consider yourself a full-time underground poster child. When I began to recognize the shift that hip hop was headed, I would find myself just getting angry, it was starting to rub me the wrong way, because I was passionate about the music...and then it became fun to make fun of it?!?! That shit upset me...sell outs...money carz and clothes. All of it...heres a great example of what it was that started to really piss me off.
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000003RL0.01._SCTHUMBZZZ_.jpg Mic Geronimo's second album Vendetta.
this album fucking sucked! And to top it off he had a track on there with Puffy. It must've been around 96 though that I kind of gave up on most of the commercial rap out there, and thanks to the internet I was able to follow links printed on liner notes of certain cd's, on link would lead to another, and so on...I'd get to hear snippets of songs, I'd take chances on a lot of underground artists and became immersed in the music.

^^^^ LOL @ Mic Geronimo! Omfg That was so funny. I'm still not completely an underground head (Im kinda walkin the tightrope) but I guess I realized I was starting to hate it a bit when Diddy started dropping singles like "Badboy 4 Life".
Diddy needs to be stopped.

I heard about Del IWMBGWH, liked a few songs and thought it was cool. I worked at Camelot Music in Sac and I got a press release of Souls 93 til Infinity....yep, even with the maxi-single of "Thats when ya lost" with the carolina blue cover.
Been hooked ever since. Still bump mainstream sometimes, most heads be hatin on it, but some of its cool to listen too. You cant just be hatin on music cuz its on the radio, man, you have to be bigger than that. Whether it be hip hop, mainstream, underground....its still rap, if you like it, you like it.

Black Star - Respiration
that was the song/video that did it for me back in highschool
little later on someone got me hip to cage, copywrite, and a few of the weathermen associates. it just escalated from there. even posted on cages messageboard for a while
