Augustus Pablo (more of an instrumental tripped out reggae vibe)
Junior Reid ... individual stuff as well as his group's (Black Uhuru) music... and if you dont know who he is, he's the guy on "Game - One Blood" and "WuTang - One Blood Under W"...
Roots Covenant (http://www.myspace.com/rootscovenant) - dope local SD reggae band (homeboys of mine)

Roots and dub gets old quick... I've been banging more dancehall than hip hop lately. I'm diggin the mid-90's, early ragga-style shit... "Buju Banton; The Early Years" has been in heavy rotation the past couple weeks.
Midnite and Morgan Heritage are two of the better roots bands out right now. Midnite has more of the classic reggae feel to them, Morgan Heritage is a little more contemporary.

Luciano is the man. Once when I was watching him rock, he busted a back flip in the middle of his song (no joke)... I was like damn... and still kept the breath control.

Check out all the artists from the Virgin Islands. Niyora has a new album that is good. Army is another good one. Bambu Station. I also like Soldiers of Jah Army and Groundation. With this lack of decent hip hop lately I have been listening to nothing but reggae. Check out reggaetraders.com/bt for some live recorded shows.

heres a faaaar stretch. if anyone has seen the (pretty obscure) skate video Rising, it was made probobly 10 years ago and its mostly florida/tampa shit anyways theres one reggae song in it and ive always wanted to know who it was. theres nothing about the music in the credits. thats a definite shot in the dark needle in a haystack...

try to describe it in lyrics or sounds. there is a great movie called 'rockers' which has a really good soundtrack with all kinds of sic riddims (http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Riddim) and some niyabinghi (http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Mansions_of_Rastafari).

could it be this vid (http://www.skateboarding.com/skate/news/article/0,23271,1541679,00.html)?
edit: maybe not, cuz you said it's an older one from 10 years ago. i'll keep looking.
the sdtrk sounds pretty dope, though, for this 'rising son' vid:
1. Dave Grohl/C-Minus "Vile"
2. Murs "Transitions Of A Rider"
3. Lexicon "Sedated"
4. Gossip "Standing In The Way Of Control"
5. Transplants "1,2,3,4,5,6,7"
6. Wajeed & Invincible "The Place Where We Dwell"
7. Fishbone "CHEYENNE Star Forever More"
8. Maddvillian "America's Most Blunted"
9. The Peak Show "Tainted Love"
10. Optimus "Pot Of Rain"
11. Steel Pulse/ Damian Marley "No More Weapons"
12. Procussions "Little People"
13. Kurupt /Everlast "Kuruption"
14. Charlie Early "Mexican Radio"
15. Queens Of The Stone Age "Mexicola"
16. Gnarls Barkley "Just A Thought"
17. Slightly Stoopid "Still Be You"
18. Team Sleep featuring Chino of the deftones "Ataraxia"
19. Mark Bell "Revolution"
20. Brant Bjork and the Bros "Dr. Aura"
21. bonus song Second Coming featuring Jay adams on vocals "No Family"

well i think there's a time and place for everything. dancehall runs the dancehall, and lover's rock and roots are suitable for the chillout. there's nothin like puttin on some Cool Ruler or Dennis Brown with your lady friend. drinkin corona's on a hammock and listenin to jimmy cliff is one of my favorite activities...me and don carlos have smoked plenty o' blunts.

^what do you consider soft? IMO, it's stuff like ragga and club stuff.
anything roots and lovers rock is straight fire. just classic riddims with graceful vocals. nicodemus is tight. i've found only one LP at a local record show. haven't been able to find anything since. the cover is him in a dope ass white suite and fedora. tracklisting off the top is:
computer, knife & fork (dope track, kind of electronic riddim)
strawberry fields
can't remember the rest
'gunman connection' (http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1409) looks dope! scientist was just down here at belly up with ranking joe (pissed i missed it). i've got 'dancehall style' and 'she love it in the morning' on MP3 but his LPs are hard to track down. the one i have sounds more electronic but in a good way if that makes sense. i'll check the name when i get home.
do you know which album the track off shortkut's 'blunted w/ a beat junkie' is from? the lyrics go something like, "all people ____ gon'to america...we say spliff, dem say j, we say fish, dem say filet..." something about forward and replay, something about OK, i cannot remember the rest.
he's got a unique flow like eek-a, and i really dig it, although i can't understand half the stuff he's talking about. computer, knife & fork? hahahaha!
tgone, i heard some richie spice, jah cure and i-wayne on that young lions comp. DOPE stuff, man! thanks of for putting me on.

I haven't read anything on this post except for Luke Warm's and the first post. From what Luke is sayin', Hawaii is definitely on it when it comes to reggae. I think the islands are holding it down worldwide right now on reggae. If anybody disagrees, that's perfectly fine. I'm not trying to argue. If you know some better stuff, let me know.
As for Hawaii stuff, check out:

Good times out in Hawaii! Stoked to hear you got back to the beach! Yup, Tony is still at World Famous. He's going to school at Grossmont now and living with his parents. His brother, Chris is working there too so it's all in the family! Never heard about the Labor Day riot, but Emery was my good friend. That was a fucked up episode and it's still on-going. The homies all miss Emery very much. He's restin' with the big dogs now though! On another note, we're having one of the illest air shows ever in Honolulu right now! Have a good one!
