The Internet is the world at your fingertips, a universal encyclopedia, and all that other cliche shit, so why is it that there are certain things which aren't available when I want them?

When it comes to hip-hop specifically, I'm talking about...

- A good review resource (rapreviews.com is garbage, and allmusic is good, but not hip-hop specific)

- A good independent hip-hop magazine (you've got allhiphop, sohh, etc. but nothing that is really repping exclusively dope shit)

- A good resource for finding unknown artists (soundclick, etc. are crazy saturated with wackness. In Toronto alone, there are at least 20 artists you all need to hear but probabaly never will. How come there isn't a quality controlled ultra-underground/independent site?)

- User Created Best Of Mixtapes for every artist (These should exist for every hip-hop artist alive so if I've been sleeping on someone, I can get their real Best Of without the research)

- Scholarly work on hip-hop culture (this is available in books, but no where on the Internet -- I guess this isn't specific to hip-hop)

Lots more.

um yes there is. But I'm not telling so it does not get saturated with "wackness" just do a little lookin and you will find a couple really good independent websites out there.

a lot of that is relative.

hip hop reviews: i always say you gotta look for this yourself and see which magazine or writer reflects what you like best so you know to keep coming back to it. i always go to various sources to see what a review might be. but with the internet and how shit gets leaked nowadays, most shit you can review yourself. i just tend to read reviews more for discussion purposes.

good hip hop magazine: same as above. i just think a lot of online magazines look bootsy as hell.

resource for unknown artists: myspace.

best of mixtapes: there's a bunch of mp3 blogs that would probably best serve this purpose.

scholarly work on hip hop culture: they're out there. you just gotta search for them. but for the most part, you gotta be connected to a university to access them. or you can just search your own shit from hip hop scholars like, tricia rose, jeff chang, nelson george, greg tate, yadadabooby...

last message pretty much summed up what I was going to say. You can find articles from these writers, but they write for major publications, so them coming together for a free blog or something like that is probably unrealistic. Anyway, somebody usually posts these good articles if you scour the message boards. I check the Village Voice once in a while. Also, DaveyD.com compiles most of them. Add Kelefa Sanneh to the list of writers.

As far as magazines and reviews... honestly, I don't think there are that many really good reviewers out there. I see good reviews, but there's never been a place that I agreed with exclusively. Or magazines will be so short with it that I don't get any sense of the album. I usually just rely on an accumulation of everything I've read. Try metacritic.com (not exclusively hip hop), and yeah, allmusic.com is probably the best, but I use it more to research older genres.

And I don't think there are enough "quality" releases for a magazine to stay in business and be "repping exclusively dope shit." How many albums do you get really excited for? For me, it's probably ten per year, maybe less.
