I was just curious what you thought about Black Milk's production and rhyming?, I think he is dope and a definite disciple of the late, great J-Dilla, his forthcoming album will be dope and you should all check the free mixtape from Fat Beats, the thing I enjoy about him is the fact that he digs for samples and beats and keeps the culture alive and doesn't rely on preset keyboards.

That wasn't my intention at all, I am just a fan and wasn't aware that talking about an artist was considered being a fucking promotional ad bot, but you learn something new everyday.

All I was trying to do was to tell those that didn't know about the free mixtape...sorry Cuba Gorilla it will never happen again.

Wow, that's a shock. I've seen him actually playing piano quite well, though.
Hm.

But shouldn't it matter less what a producer uses, but more on the end product? Just because it took/takes someone longer or more "work" is involved in my mind doesn't necessarily make it better.

I could make a beat now, based on a few new samples I dug up, and do a lot of chopping, pitch bending, etc, and make a hot track. Or..I could make a beat, and use the samples to make an equally hot song.

Can't like one more than other.

I agree. Whether you make a beat by recording yourself pounding on some pots for 20 minutes, or spend two weeks doing some high tech shit in your room full of knobs and blinking lights, is irrelevant. So long as it sounds tight.

as the production duo br gunna (which is black milk+young rj) he's actually been involved in producing the majority of slum village's last two albums as well as beats for Phat Kat and most recently Pharoahe Monch (he has 3 beats on the new album)...let alone his sound of the city album which is just dope in itself. rhymwise i think the album was good, but he's been steppin up his vocals especially for the new stuff he has out.

i am seriously hyped for this release. i predict both his and one be lo's albums are going to be some big deals this year...

I've listened to Black Milks album, and I have to say, I do not find him appealing as a lyricist. He sounds like a knockoff version of Phonte, and just seems to be trying a little too hard. Even with the hot beats, he just doesn't sound right. I also don't like his voice much.

Meanwhile, Evidences' Weatherman LP is really really dope, with hot production throughout. I like this album, and Jesus Price Supastar more than Black's. I feel it was way overhyped for absolutely no reason.

Quite a bit of Slum. Raise it up being one of my favorite songs. But yes, My Bro is a huge Dilla fan, and is getting me to be one. I didn't know he did so many songs I liked. Like the original 93 til infinity. He played me the original sample and I barely figured it out. Im getting into him more and more(after his death), and I feel guilty about it as a producer. It's his rapping. His voice just wasn;t made for it, (imo) and at times, it seems like he's copying Phonte of Little Brother. And the thing is, his lyrics aren't wack. Its just that he doesn't sound right saying them. His beats made the album listenable at times, though. Dilla was a better MC. He had this natural swagger to him. I could feel that.

I really don't think Popular Demand is worth all the hype its getting either. It's pretty dope, I'm a fan of this guy's production definitley...but its his rapping skills that aren't up to par with the beats hes making. if that makes sense.

I thought he had a decent verse on sound the alarm, but a lot of the tracks don't do it for me. I almost want to say I liked the Pressure mixtape more based on the guests it had on there.

workin on it.. i could just do that for hours on end. right now i'm just sort of learning the ropes. Just got off the phone with Black Milk, he's upset that you guys don't appreciate him..

but seriously, i love making beats.

I've got the USB Turntable sampling thing down (love sampling when I can)
Recycle 2.1 Loop program is pretty self explanatory.

Reason is the shit, luckily i'm familiar with it from before. I've basically made one track so far, but here is where i'm stuck.

I got to where i want the song to end and it basically has like 5 tracks (drums, sequencer, 3 samples). So what do i do from here, do I send it somewhere in reason to master it, export it as one complied wav. or something else, or try to get it over to Pro tools? One more thing.. what is the normal pattern of a song Chorus, verse, chorus, verse.. etc?? And what is the average bar count for each?

Pro tools is another beast i haven't messed with yet

black milk is teary eyed now

His wordplay doesn't remind you of Phonte? Thats all I can hear with him sometimes. Like I said. Might just be me. Sorry if that offended you.

And I usually give someone a 4 bar intro, then 16 bars, 8 bar chorus, 16 more, and 8 for another chorus. You can probably have fun mixing/mastering it yourself. Thats where Acid comes into play.
Set your song up in there (if you like) It takes the stress of of FL for me, as I also use it for chopping samples as well.

And nah, I doubt he cares what I/we think. His beats are still hot. :D

Didnt offend me. I just dont hear it.

The thing about this album is that its solid quality all the way through. Beginning to end. It isnt ground breaking or anything. Theres a lot to be said for making an album this solid though. I prefer 16-20 track of heat to some groundbreaking shit with just a few bangers and some straight garbage.

You can listen to this album beginning to end.

My two cents... I picked up the Broken Wax EP and wasn't very impressed. None of it was terrible but nothing too memorable for me either, I returned that puppy. To me it kinda sounded like somebody trying to make Jaylib 2 tracks.

The "Let's Go" track he did for Monch is heat, but I haven't really felt anything else I've heard from dude too much. His style is kinda simplistic but with too much going on for me, if that makes any sense.

I think B.M. just uses better drum patterns that are a little easier to vibe on. Sean Price to Record LP with Black Milk, Talks Heltah Skeltah and New Solo Project (http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=9273)
-----------------------------------
Boot Camp Click member Sean Price recently spoke with G4TV.com’s The Feed about an upcoming project he’s working on with Detroit producer Black Milk. According to the Brokest Rapper Alive, as soon as he returns from the road — he’s currently on tour with Jedi Mind Tricks — he’s heading to Detroit to work on the as yet untitled project with Black Milk and his brother Guilty Simpson. Black enjoyed critical acclaim earlier this year for his solo project Popular Demand.

Ruck also revealed that him and partner Rock are currently hard at work on what will be the first Heltah Skeltah album since 1998’s Magnum Force. “The name of the album is D.I.R.T.,” Sean P told G4TV.com, “which stands for “Da In-Credible Rap Team. We’ve been working on it for, like, eight months now and have three songs. So that’s how we’re approaching it, real serious, man.”

Also, the Brooklyn MC revealed his upcoming third solo LP will be called Mic Tyson.

I finally got around to listening to this "Jesus Price" album, and I wasn't impressed. Didn't like the mastering (if there was any done), a lot of the drum beats weren't meshed good with the samples chopped, and he didn't really impress me much with the way he tried to put his songs together

Decent listen I guess though

It may be slow, but remember, they're takin' it seriously... Thas what matters.

So that’s how we’re approaching it, real serious, man.

i agree. it was a good listen but nowhere near great.

i came to the conclusion that the guy is just flat out dumb. he tries to make himself sound smart at times but it only makes him sound dumber because he doesn't know what he's talking about. (ex.: in one of his rhymes he says "multiple scoliosis"... now i'm assuming he meant "multiple sclerosis" because scoliosis is a completely different thing... ah well, what are you gonna do?)

what he meant is that there was multiple times he was sitting in class with back pain from not sitting upright in his chair and it still haunts him today. Multiple scoliosis is a serious condition that plagues the youth of today. I for one am glad someone finally stepped up and addressed what I consider to be the most important problem in america today. DAMN Multiple scoliosis!!
