View Full Version : Top 60 songs from 60 Artists Project

I was talkin to Cdirty last night about picking the top 60 songs from 60 artists (don't worry, Im not going to be coast exclusive, or anything), and compiling them into a zip file for download, so you guys, (and anyone else) can yay or nay my choices.
I already have a good idea of who some of the artists are gonna be, but I'd like a few of your suggestions.
Won't be a whole mainstream list, as it will include underground cats too.
I want it to be so good, that you can run through it without skipping any tracks. A big task? Yeah, but I wanna start up my resume.

Hmm.. where there 60 really good artists/songs out in a given year? I gotta check that out. Until then, I think you guys might make me push this to 100, cause with all the suggestions, I might just be at/past 70. :)
whoops, Im wrong, Im at just 58. How convenient. I think thats a hella good mix of old/new/west/east/south/everywhere.

yeah the hard part is gonna be choosing just one song from each of those artists/groups... dudes like e-40, redman, ghostface, common... have put out so much good music over the years that to choose their "best" song is damn near impossible. good luck wit it tho, keep us posted on your choices.

I've been listening to music.. like all night and day(while playing my new Ps2 emulator/Okami) and I came to a few decisions on best songs.
Ran through capital punishment, Yeaah baby, and Endangered species, and for pun it will be:
Big Punisher- The Dream Shatterer
Listened to LR, College Dropout, various other stuff, and for Kanye it's gonna have to be
Kanye West- We Major OR All Falls Down
Bumped Labcabincaliforia, and others like twice.. and I came up with
this for Pharcyde-
Pharcyde- Drop OR Back In The Days
For Mos Def I got
Mos Def- Mr Nigga OR Thieves in the Night
The Game gets this:
The Game- No More Fun And Games- OR Wouldn't Get Far (im leaning to WGF)
Nas was really really hard.
Nas- Halftime, The Message(from it was written) Nas is Like (I Am) or, One Mic (Stillmatic) or, 2nd Childhood
Pharoahe Monch was also hard, but most of his stuff was never really compiled so I had to go listening to various compilations:
Pharoahe Monch- The Light, The Truth, Desire
Working on more. This is the biggest thing I've ever done, but Im sure I can do it. Give me ya feedback, suggestions.

I thought it was Pharcyde O_O; Gotta look into that. If it is jsut Ahmed, then it'll be Drop. (I was prolly gonna pick drop anway. Great song, AND classic video).
Anyone got a better Dre song than "Been there, Done that"? (solo)
And I been bumpin some of that Livin Legends stuff (I find Murs and Grouch to be the best imo), but I can't figure out what track to use as their best. You guys are experts on this.

Im definitely trying to make this a classic kind of file. Somethign that you can pick up, and play, and not have to press "next" ONCE. Because unlike other compilations, every track is a certified banger/classic.
I really like all you guys suggestions, and it's moving the process along way faster than I thought it would.Im just trying to find clear quality songs of the ones I don't own myself (or own a shitty copy of) So that the quality doesn't suffer from song to song.
Making this a 100 song blend run through would be ridiclulous, so I'm gonna break it into group tracks. East, West, South, Midwest, etc.
Keep like-regions together, for those who won't be listening to it all a one time, and so they can easily access the songs from their neck of the woods, etc.

you can cut down some numbers if you kinda collapse some artists spots by putting tracks that contain more than one artist that you want on your tape.
ie
meth & red instead of one meth and one red song each.
or a wu song instead of one from rza, meth, rae, and ghost.
a blackstar song instead of a song from both kweli and mos.
but then again. you might be trying to emphasize their solo material. just an idea. if you are trying to make it fit a fixed number.

Im not really making an 80's list. I plan to though. Most of the artists on my list have put out material from 1990 until the present. I had another project in mind for Soul/Disco/Which turned into Rap dating from 1970 to to 1989.
Right after I finish this one, and see how well it's received. I might keep all 80's people off the list now that I think about it, as you dont want to hear repeat songs/artists on repeat lists.. Something to think about... .

NY State of Mind is better.
Represent has what I like to call a "Black Moon chorus". A "Black Moon chorus" is a single word or phrase shouted repeatedly for 4 or 8 bars or so by a group of rowdy sounding individuals (presumably the artists crew who just happened to be whylin out in the studio when they were recording). This repetitive shouting serves as the chorus. The "Black Moon chorus" has ruined many otherwise classic songs in my opinion.

Damn.. Slum Village.. gotta put em on there at least for DIllas sake... Hm... Salt and peppa has to leave the list, due to the "80'" thing, so they'll replace them.

Reunion is the truth too.
Oh yeah, Aueu. Im gonna give you a riddle, so that this Gangstarr track can make the list.
Or anyone that wants to answer it*
It was used as the backdrop to Lil Waynes "shooter"
It's an interpolation of a Premier beat.
"ba di, di, di di di ba di, di, di, di di"
Raise it up is tight, but I think Reunion is a more thorough track... also, I'm going to have to give the Nod on a Gangstarr track. The monotone monster needs a spot
"ba di, di, di di di ba di, di, di, di di"
what im here 4?
and i vote "look of love" for the SV

Hard to keep track when everyones throwing suggestions in. Never thought this would get to 6 pages, or that the list/songs would be this good. Major achievement.

If that's the case, you're going to have to get rid of the following:
Dr. Dre----
Scarface---
The. D.O.C --
Ice Cube --
Public Enemy--
Big Daddy Kane--
LL Cool J--
UGK--
I think the 6th sense is the best Premo beat, but you know :)

Almost finished.
Been downloading the songs the past couple days. Honestly, this idea was easy, but execution was more difficult. I just want the finished product to be nice. Pictures with the tracks, Organized well, and every track to be quality (no mixtape tracks with DJ Clue yelling at us)
I was planning on releasing the download this Friday for everyone to download, so I could get the feedback/criticism for the next one.

It's to see what other people enjoy, I suppose. I'd love to see what your top 60 songs on your playlist are. Or, maybe it's just my love of making compilations/Music. After this is done, I have a "FUCK YOU" mixtape in the works. Hip-Hop songs that exemplify "fuck you", or "I'm better than you". Etcetera.
It keeps my mind off of stuff.

yo,
some of these tracks are really poor quality. for example: the sean price track is 43 kbps and silly puddy is 87 kbps. and that version of silly puddy is the remix which is also cool but really you cant beat the orignal.
