I am just exploring stuff through Orbitz (flight + hotel packages for three nights) and, actually, shit isn't looking too bad... roughly $500 a person for round trip tickets from Portland to San Francisco. That's pretty damn good.

When I went to Germany in December, I ended paying $1300 for my goddamn ticket, because I was flying so close to Christmas (departed on 20 December). To this day, I'm still fucking bitter about that shit.

I hate that hotwire doesn't show you the hotel until after it's paid for..And their cancellation policy worries me as well..

Especially looking for rooms in NYC..Without paying $300+/night, it's almost a cointoss whether you'll get a decent hotel or not..I'd rather go directly through the Hotel itself..Or at least use a company that gives me the hotel they are choosing for me..

Yeah, I hear you. I used to hate that, but I don't mind it as much anymore. Especially when booking in SF because I'm familiar with the areas and I usually know the hotels that they use so it's not too bad. If you know the area you want though and you get a 4-star chances are it's not going to be bad.

I do get a little more anxious when I book hotels in areas I'm not used to, but you can't beat a lot of the rates.

Nah... My girlfriend's little sister is an Army nurse at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, and provided that we don't go there sooner, I know we'll be there this coming Memorial Day weekend.

My only real experience with Texas was having lived in El Paso / Fort Bliss for three months in the summer of '05. Not too bad of a place; or at least it grew on me.

damn dude... el paso is the armpit of texas... san antonio isn't much better unless you're messican. SA is only a half hour drive from austin though... you should definitely hit up 6th street. if you've never been to houston or dallas though you have no idea what kind of texas i'm talking about when i say texas > whatever.
