This could be considered a promo topic so I'll leave it to the mods discretion... my label put this album out...

He's probably not as well known as DJ Shadow or Pigeon John but give that Smoke of Oldominion album a try if you like Hip Hop that's a little different.

It's drops this Tuesday, there's a pre-order up here at Access with some good bonus stuff.

Willamette Week Review (Sept. 20th, 2006 90,000 circulation)

Smoke
Bleed (Super Happy Wax Recordings)
It took this Portland emcee four years to complete his debut, and it shows.

[POST-HIP-HOP] Whenever somebody says their album was four years in the making, one wonders how much of that time was really spent contemplating and formulating an album and how much of it was spent getting high and watching Family Guy. Bleed, the debut album from Smoke of Oldominion, however, actually sounds like it took four years to make.

Over the course of Bleed's 15 tracks, Smoke presents those four years of time-lapse emotional and stylistic growth. It's a portrait of the artist as a young nervous breakdown, wherein the emcee's own emotional and spiritual sanity fight for air under the massive structural collapse of hip-hop and the U.S. government. Think of a post-Sept. 11 hip-hop's OK Computer.

The album starts with the scattered pops of a beaten old record and disjointed gangsta-rap squeals that soon fade into the punchy war-drums of "Compress," where the narrator opens with the line, "Look at myself like 'who's that?'" before the orders come down from the top in a megaphone blare: "March/ Kill/ Build/ Destroy/ March/ Build/ Kill/ Destroy."

It becomes clear by the next track, "Sinners and Saints," that our narrator, if not Smoke himself, believes these are the end days. He makes a pretty convincing, rapid-fire argument to that effect, declaring that "the last page of history" has something to do with "hobblin' hope bearin' folk sharin' needle evil people tearin' soul shaking pill-popping goblin sniffing coke." When Smoke goes on these verbal rampages, it's almost impossible to follow him completely, but here he keeps the light on long enough to lay blame on both a "crooked son president" and himself, feebly admitting, "Killa, I'm tryin' to build the Tower of Babel out of 40 bottles and beer cans."

The narrator turns not only to religion for solace, but to bling and broken-from-the-start relationships as well. By the end of the album, he's taking drugs that keep him awake for days on end ("Lullaby"). In true Thom Yorke form, Smoke spits a grip of seemingly incongruous phrases before calming down by taking another hit, when the voice of a drug-induced siren/angel sings him into death. After a short silence, seven minutes of ambient noises and sporadic techno-beats shoot like stars over faded AM radio signals, an eerily upbeat postscript to one of the most compelling stories a Northwest emcee has ever told.

—CASEY JARMAN.

Smoke's Bleed hits stores Tuesday, Sept. 26. Smoke plays with JFK, MyG, Sandpeople and DJ Void, Friday, Sept. 22 at Ash Street. 10 p.m. $5. 21+.

That was my general attitude, until Count Bass D's Dwight Spitz album fucked that up.

Donuts plays real smooth though, there aren't really breaks between tracks. Pretty much a continuous head-nodder.

yeah, i had that dwight spitz album and i ended up returning it (but i saved it in itunes) cause i was pissed at spending that much money on about 25 minutes or so of music.. it did have some dope tracks though...

"donuts" sounds nice then... i know its been out for awhile but i may look into it... i've been sleeping a lot recently and am very tired of my music collection. i think my most recent purchase was the new PUTS when it dropped

haven't heard all of pigeons new one, but everything so far sounds top notch, i'd say better than the last. has a real summer vibe to it as you would guess from the cover and title. masta killa is not as good as the last so get that first if you dont have it, but this one is solid and the fellow tangers come through superbly.

and theres been a split reaction on the following 06 releases but most of it i'm diggin -- method man, inspectah deck, too short, daz, dogg pound, cube, busta

everything in sd is same ol sd... sunrays, dimes, hangin ten, sparkin prime mota, and 2 teams that are showing some promise. plus my a's are killin it. been playin some ball (check it, sdabl.com (www.sdabl.com)) and got a new surfboard so i cant complain. how bout you man?

nice! I'll check out a few of those. Heard good things about Ghosts Fishscale too.

glad to hear all is well down there. sounds like the life to live. i've always liked san diego.. is highlife still posting on here?? the A's will always be dope, grew up on them bad boys myself.

life is good up here.. i've been living in the sticks of the bay area since december with the lady friend and having fun with that. she's my partner in crime. we're moving down to Hollywood on October 2nd.. should be interesting! a few blocks away from Pinks hot dogs.. that place is hella good! but yeah, i'm pretty stoked on being somewhere new

twisted_harmonix
09-20-2006, 01:33 PM
thats right, fishscale... how could i forget that one?!?! definitely a bumpable release right there. and gotta love the $6.99 deal at best buy when it came out.

where in the bay are you livin at? and whats bringin you to down to hollywierd? i spent a summer there about 7 years ago, actually stayed in silverlake which is right around the corner... the beastie boys have a house there. cool neighborhood but wouldn't want to live anywhere in la for more than a few months.

skibadee
09-20-2006, 01:46 PM
dude, we're right in the center of hollywood.. crazy. i'd never been there before. yeah, it'll be different. i just needed a change and she's lived in LA before and wanted to go back. i've been living in Pittsburg/Antioch for awhile now. it's pretty much concord, but further away from anything desirable and more strange.

but yeah, Hollywood was like any other city to me, with its won unique personality to it. hopefully it'll all work out. i've heard of silverlake... my good friend moved down there a few years ago to go to art school of design in pasadena and he was lookin into silverlake.. anyhow, i'm hopin for the best

i'll probably buy the shadow & maybe the planet asia.
haven't actually bought a cd since idlewild.
obie trice's second round is ok, but i wouldn't buy it.
i wouldn't mind promo/burnt copies of the
method man, dpg, and ice cube albums..

Rifleman aka Ellay Khule - In My Own World
Extremely slept on emcee IMO. Lyricly kills every track that he touches and is very creative with it. Joe Dub comes correct with the production too.

Sunspot Jonz - Back in Black
Very solid album. Lot of bangers on this one. Sunspot got help from a couple different producers but the album still flows really well.

cycledelikwon

I need me that Rifleman Ellay Khule 'in my own world' somethang fierce.
Soon.....very soon.
Subtle 'for hero for fool' (only available at the show til 10/10)
Smoke 'bleed' (gotta repeat this one).

I heard I Gotcha last night, that's a great song. I was planning on grabbing this but the production credits looked a little $u$pec+, and fucking Amoeba is charging like $18 for the wax. Come on, used bin...

I got the new Count Bass D 12" last weekend and that shit is very very dope. The LP drops next week or the week after, should be good stuff.

Lupe has great singles but the rest of the album was kinda mediocre. He can't write hooks (and can't sing them either). Mixed reviews though, and there are some jams, so it might be worth picking up.

Get both Dilla's, but Donuts is MUCH better.

Strange Fruit is solid, nice laid back music. Pick it up, I recommend it.

Get that Zion I/Grouch album, I was a little skeptical but it's overall a good listen. I think it drops the 17th? And get Hall of Justus' Soldiers of Fortune, I think that is the 17th too (on iTunes now). Both good listens.

Just off the top of my head...
