View Full Version : Quick Production Question

So one problem I have with hip hop now (or you could say "one way hip hop could progress") is that nearly 100% of rap songs have looped beats. Great bassists evolved past just looping a baseline to either jamming or just making slight changes every once in a while. Do ya'll know of any good rap groups/producers where the beat changes commonly during a single track. Oh, and I don't mean something like Murs' Walk Like a Man where the song is done in three parts. I think Hieroglyphics does what I'm looking for a bit but hopefully ya'll know some others.

Peace,

Dan

not to trying to be condescending to your knowledge of dilla, but youre kidding right? in one of the best ways ive heard dilla's production be described, its aestheticism is essentially "anti-anthemic." if we were to use demigodh's description of what most hip hop beats sound like, "looped beats", than that is purely what dilla's beats were about. and by no means am i reducing his production to the rest of the bland hip hop out there, but am elevating the standard that he had set. a dilla beat was as hip hop as one can get, and he mastered it.

to be honest, i didn't really read any posts.... and you caught me....

i saw a thread entitled quick production question..... and now that i realize what really is being discussed here, outside of the 'welcome to detroit' instros, nah, dilla most definitely isn't going to solve ol dan's woes.....

Just to quickly answer your question. I started by listening to pop rap in the early 2000s with shit like Nelly and Jay Z. Then I got hardcore into the Living Legends (who are still my favorite group) and became a backpacker snob for a long time. During these snobbery days, I got fairly well versed in west coast underground shit and backpacker underground rap from few other places (random groups like Typical Cats from Chicago or Binary Star from Michigan etc...). I only recently realized how retarded I was acting when I would judge people for listening to rap on the radio and have now started to get into dirty south rap alot.

Anyways, what initially sparked my question was I was listening to Hiero song (i can't remember the name but it has a piano in the beat and the last verse is Del singing "hold up, stop the presses, this just came in, Del's done it again, you gotta get his name in...") and in the song, the piano part is constantly changing. I liked that aspect of the song and wanted to know if groups did shit like that. I imagine groups with live sets like The Roots do but I don't listen to them all that much.

Appreciate the help everyone,

Peace,

Dan
