Arif Martin
Eve Nelson
Joe Sample
Chaka her self

You are probably referring to Arif Martin... they worked together the longest.

slightly related: i never understood why people rocked cartoon characters on leather jackets and other clothing. it doesn't make sense to me how cartoons = rap fashion. also, i was watching this doc. on tattoos last night and this newbie got a tasmanian devil on her thigh area. she got the idea from a tie her mom had given her as a teen. what a dumb broad. i know this one guy who is an accountant who has a big akira on his calf. i've also heard of someone (maybe from this board) rocking the predator on his forearm. dumbasses.

Fuck a sample, it's all about the genius of speeding up your own voice.

I dont know who was the first but since we're on the topic......

I'm really, really getting tired of that sound. I think it's because Kanye does it in almost every song he makes. I think he just overdid it.

There's no writing credits on the album or cover, but I gotta assume that it's Sir Mix-A-Lot. Buttermilk Biscuits is the first song on the album and I couldn't see dude having his homie perform the first joint on his debut solo album.

weird. i was watchin that same show last night before i fell asleep and i ended up having this crazy dream that i got a full on face tattoo. i could see myself looking in the mirror asking myself why i got it. in my dream, i felt like i was on the verge of crying cuz it woulda been the dumbest thing i ever done and i'd never look like myself again. i was so relieved to open my eyes and find myself layin in bed.

^crazy. i have such a bad memory that i can't recall what that is called (the face tattooing). that and the somoan waist-knee tribal shit is wild. this past halloween a hawaiian dude dressed as one of those warriors and was gettin' BUCK WILD in the joint (fake tattoos). it was crazy cuz he would be normal one moment while playing drinking games and then all of a sudden break out into character and run around doing all these crazy stances/poses and getting into peoples' face. i can understand the reasons behind getting stuff like that but corny cartoons, come on people!

your girl has a cherry, doesn't she? i consider stuff like that cool, or acceptable, but cartoon characters and team logos and shit is just plain stupid. do you have any tats?

i would get one but i haven't thought of/found anything worth getting.

I saw some dude at the pool on Saturday with the EA Sports logo tatted on his shoulder like a herb.

I have a gang of tats and they all signify something. Not one is just a "random picture" or some corny gay shit i picked off the wall in the shop.

wow. it's funny when you notice them on people who you wouldn't expect to have 'em. like the accountant homeboy with akira on his calf. or maybe it's dragon ball z or some shit. i'm not really familiar with the anima characters. he got it when he was 18.

and shit, EA sports? hahah!

it's settled, i think i'ma get a republican elephant tatted up on my right shoulder.

I knew a dude that got a Mickey's hornet tattoo.

And to answer your next question, yes he was a complete tool.

Cosign on RZA as the first... or first known.

As for me, I remember not liking sped up vocals for the longest time, especially because of the Diplomats. They made me love 'em and hate 'em at the same time because that "Oh Boy" had a nice beat, but the others were just annoying.

And hopefully, as the "screwed" style samples go completely mainstream, the use of sped up vox will dwindle for a while... And more than likely, it'll get overused( if it isn't already) all too soon.

As with anything, no matter how played out it gets, it'll still sound dope if its done right.

Well what about Charizma and PB Wolf's "Jack the Mack"?

That was recorded in like 92...3 years before liquid swords was released.

And as mentioned, kwame and shaka kahn before that.

I guess you could argue that RZA did it best tho.

So you see...back in the earilest sessions of the eighties..the hiphop culture united, not as a collective from a certain number of forces, but actually finetuning a number of forces, inside of an urban collection of youths; being creative and expressive with their time..
it's wasn't until later in the years, did the actual definition of "elementS" come into play, in where each one of these collective forces were now being independant from one another...

Slowly and surely,
One form or "element" naturally tended to cross-over into another, thereby bringing backpacks to hiphop venues, sweatbands and wristbands to bombin' sessions, and finally....

Characters of an animated sort, to hiphop fashion, (<ofcourse hiphop fashion being accepted in the culture as a newerblend of each element)..stemming simply from Charater depictions in the graff art world...

plus fools found that hiphop chicks dug em and thought that they ACTUALLY bombed or broke...simply by wearing these headbands or Character's on their jackets..

Have any of you ever heard The Alliance "Fish Heads" from wayback in 1988?...that could be the first...but it is incredibly played out now in my view.
