what would you think if you saw someone perform for the first time... maybe they were out of state so you never heard of them... but say they go on stage and rock a show and every single one of the beats in the 5 song set was another persons beat? i mean recognizable beats from established artists. is it possible to pay homage to artists before you or is it straight jackin? weigh in on the issue.
Thats a jack move. Straight up, unless they called out the artists before hand, or paid homage in some respect.... like "Ya'll might recognize this beat......" or some shit.
Otherwise, it's robbery.
Speaking of Thursday Nights.... City College is headed to Vegas from 4/11 - 4/15.
What are our chances.....?

if they ONLY rocked beats from other artists it'd be kinda lame. if they did a set and closed with a medley of original material over beats that everybody knows and loves then it could be fresh. my friend did that at his cd release party and it came off pretty tight. or you could do what i've seen other artists (cma, atmosphere, and a few others) where you start off with your beat and the dj cuts to a well known beat in the middle and cuts back into your beat afterwords. i don't know if i explained that well.
what are your thoughts on the house/guest dj playing cuts from the headliner before his set goes on?

ya, that's the shit. i do that almost every time i deejay for an artist in my camp... that's definetly the right way to do it. or i think you can pull off calling out the artists whose beat it is first and then ripping his beat harder than he did, but only if you rip harder.

i have seen shock g tell a deejay to stop spinning his shit, he told the deejay "you're spinning our whole set". so i learned from that it's not a very good idea. i have asked artists if they are performing a certain song because i really wanted to play it tho and if they arent performing they are usually cool with it. i've also had artists tell me no tho, and that they hate hearing someone spin there shit while they are around. probly cause it's so old to them.

What are our chances.....?You should check Poly Hybid Crew while you're out there...and do a set with them..
I know a dude in that crew, he rocks stages a lot..
they did just some shows..or from I can take, they do quite a bit of gigs there, being that's where they're focused.
They're definitely hiphop heads with a varity.
Tell the black cat, Striker sent cha...
naw just playin'...just rock a show wit em..I bet y'all music would get these crowds hyped, when rather they are somewhat non, at times, ALSO from whati gathered.

If you saw how WEAK i was last time, you'd understand.

That's how atmosphere and them did it before they really blew up. I saw em at maritime hall years ago and they basically just rapped over popular beats and showcased their rhymes.. It's a good way to gain recognition faster I guess..

wow. ya, that sounds a little suspect actually. Poly Hylo is actually Omino and Synikle, a Philipino and a black cat. I think i know the cat ur talkin about.. Newtrenz... or something like that. he is featured on 2 of the tracks on the new album. he's definatly not part of Poly Hylo. they actually performed this Sunday and that cat got up on stage and rocked for the first time on a track. it was his first time i guess but im being nice by saying he had no mic control. i couldn't hear a thing he tried to say because he doesn't know how to project his voice through a mic yet. very amature. i know Poly Hylo really well, they have recorded tracks with my camp and i've booked them for numerous shows. Synikle is at my show every Sunday, he's one of the dopest battle rappers we have in Vegas. as a matter of fact i even think they dissed my show on the new album. i'm kinda flattered.

Oh hellz naw... I'm packin up the ski mask and 12 gauge and coming to town.
I don't think I'd have a problem with an MC doing an entire (short) set over other people's beats. I think they should be very well known tracks though so if people don't know what the deal is it's kinda on them. A lot of heads used to do that back in the day, and I think it's preferrable to rhymin over their neighbor's friend's cousin's weak shit. It's almost like a cry for help in the best possible way too, you gotta figure that if you have skills any producers in the house will offer to help you out in the future.
I might have to make it out to viggity-Vegas for S's gig depending on how my cash flow and job hunt are going. I'm definitely comin through at least one more time before I go overseas...

I talked to that cat the day after that show..
he's def not amature, he's rocked grips and grips of show in frisco with all sorts of crews for all sorts of venues...
he's in some works talkin' wit bicasso from what I understand..like that..
he's fuckin' sick..I've done a couple old school tracks with him..never any shows tho.but I can gurentee he rips, cuz I've seen it..and just busted up on fools..but that night he was like, ah fuck..hella embarassing and unpro..
he said he didn't get together wit em..talkin about the set..so he ended up drinkin' like four or five tall cans of 211 and a bottle of maddog 2020..and he said,
"takes blood, i forgot my verse right there on stage..i was so caught up hella drunk in it's content..that I could remember....etc..etc.."
I was like,
dude that ain't you..you're a bitch..(fukin' wit him...)
but I;m only ramblin' cuz that bums me out..cuz this fool got talent..
and being a musically imprisioned victim..of music..
I'm obligated to set that shit strait...
but good for you..keep up the work..cuz in the end..really..there's no other choice..
actually edit:
I think newtrenz gave poly hylo their name

but as far as groups doing someone elses beats,
I guess it all comes down to the fans, or the crowd,
cuz if most of the crowd are there to hear some music,
then it wouldn't matter,
but if the crowd's there to see some artists,
then what the fuck is that,
I won't even think of puttin' something together,
if someone else ared did...

i guess i'll have to do some more research on cat cause i'm not sure. i've seen him in a couple open mics and what not.. we might be talking about a diff person.
this is good discussion on the jackin for beats thing. i 'm kinda feelin what patch said and what lb said about atmosphere doing it opened my eyez a little.
Who did this?
What tracks did they rock?
Did they give any mention to the artists of whom they jacked? I mean.... a song or two is one thing, but a whole set?

my old host, ras one, wants to do this. i told him i wouldn't deejay his set and then he said he would deejay his own set.. lol. i got the hookup on a show in so cal, i can bring 2 artists/crews, and one other deejay. i got Jason the Argonaut to be one of the sets, but ima bring the other act out with me from vegas. i offered it to ras but only if he could get some original beats. he got heated.
oh, and he wants to rock over:
tried by 12"
nas - stillmatic (which is basically a rakim & eric b beat)
rip shop b side (some average rawkus 12")
and a KMD beat.
i offered it to ras but only if he could get some original beats. he got heated.
Thats fuckin hilarious.
Tell him to holler at your Colorado fam. I'll hold him down with a few beats.

That's ideal. Shit like that, Daytona 500, Ante Up... if dude could back it up with real skills I think it would be legit. Especially if he was DJing himself. I think the "one man show" component would help a lot. Rip Shop? No. KMD? If it was like Peachfuzz or Plumskinnz maybe, but I think too many people are still sleepin on their shit.
