View Full Version : Mm Food
Okay, it's been out for a couple days...time to make a thread.
Just got it last night and haven't had a chance to listen to the whole album yet BUT, so far it's okay. The first 4 songs are kinda weak (on the first listen). Track 5 gets better, but then the next 4 tracks are instrumentals. Oh, and he uses a bunch of previously used beats (maybe the entire song was previously released? didn't pay close attention to the lyrics). There's some good stuff on there for sure, but it's not what I was expecting or hoping for.
Anyone else? Thoughts?

^f'real, huh (@ s...'s post, not yours sadseen).
he is the WORST monosyllabic rapper ever. a lot of the beats i skip (and i mean A LOT) are worse than el-p's and that is saying A LOT right there.
he rarely utilizes bass or melody. it's mostly all cling clang washing machine mierda caca-phony.

Hmmm, I can listen to Vik Vaughn, King G, and Op. Doomsday from start to finish. And I really like the way he raps. But then again, I like El-P.

DO NOT get that second Vicktor Vaughn CD. It is garbage. I'm a Doom fan but far from a completist. The beats sound fucked up. And I don't mean in a good way. No innovation; they sound like shit fans of URB magazine (the non-hiphop portions of that mag) would listen to and make. TI threw my copy away.
I ordered the MM Food a week ago; it's in the pipeline...I'll likely receive it in a day or two. I've pre-heard a lot of things about it, though. The consensus (at least among knowledgable hip-hop fans with taste) is that it's tons better than VV2, some like it more than Geedorah, but doesn't come close to Doomsday or Madvillain. The four instrumentals in the middle of the album throwing the disc off-kilter is the primary complaint. Another appears to be his occasional use of beats previously released in the Special Herbs volumes. That's not a problem, at least a major one, with me, since I wanted him to rip those beats anyway. And yes he can rip. I like his flow, and his delivery and sense of humor and timing is quality also.
I can easily listen to Geedorah, Doomsday, Vaudeville Villain, and especially Madvillain from front to back. There may be a clunker here and there but the bulk of his work is solid, if not stellar. And fuck, Doomsday is a classic. There's very few artists that I find interesting these days, and he happens to be one of them. And I always liked risk-takers on the mic and beats, especially when it comes naturally and dopeness is the result. There's more to hip-hop than fifth-derivative Pete Rock-copying jazz/soul ripoffs. Expand people.

my brother said all this shit somewhere else...i thought it was a pretty good argument...AND I QUOTE:
"i gotta admit his beats were a little weird at first to me too, but i love em now, they don't have that shinny, big studio sound to em... i don't want my beats picked over with a fine toothed comb, filtered, mixed down, or whatever you producers do to em... hip hop is our generations rock and roll, it's better off when people find it challengeing and is left kind of raw, led zepplin and hendrix were rock and 30 years latter we got fucking creed and hillary duff considered rock!! ahhhh!!! bad news, hip hop is 25 years old now!! everyone likes it now!! it's accessable now!! company's can sell shit (see jay-z, puff daddy) off hip hop now... point is i'm glad you find that his beats hurt your ears, it's a good cop out, cause the stuff he says is amazing and well beyond any safe mainstream or underground stuff out... "rhymes, flows, and lyrics", And DOOM is a vet (see: KMD)!!! or member "gas face"? by 3rd bass? he was on that record... frankly, in my opinion, a good portion of people who listen to hip hop nowadays would have been listening to guns n' roses or motley cru if they were born 10 years earlier... most people just try and fit in with what's popular, and hip hop is definetly that... so it's about that new snoop/neptunes track you got pumping out of your tinted, slammed mustang your parents bought you, than being a fan of the music... it's image dude, not content... and DOOM is the antithasis of that... which is why his music is GREAT, and greatness is never appriciated in it's time.... or you know whatever... i also like fucking 50 cent so what do i know?"

Hell yeah - that shit's nice!
Listened to it on the way into work again and I still don't like the early tracks. "Hoe Cakes" would be alright if it weren't for the female "supa" vocal sample...shit's annoying! And I really don't understand why people like Madlib - track 4 (the one he produced) is fucking horrible, it almost makes my ears bleed.
As for him rapping over Special Herbs beats - I don't mind that he's "reusing" them. I actually didn't buy into the Special Herbs series so I don't know how many of the beats were on SH Vols, but I recognize some beats from Herbs and Spices - they're good beats so it's nice he hear them again with his vocals.
It's a shame that the album gets good after it's half over - but surprisingly I'm not disappointed with the purchase (usually I won't buy an album if there's 2 or more songs I won't listen to).

Just copped the album today and finished a listen. Just as I suspected, the skits/instrumentals in the middle throws off the flow of the album. Those should have been spread evenly over the disc or left at the end.
I feel this album the way I felt about Operation Doomsday. I heard a lot of the tracks (and in MM Food's case, the beats) previously, that it became diffucult to fully appreciate the album initially. It was only until I came back to Doomsday several weeks later that I could appreciate Doomsday as a whole body of work. On a scale of 1 to 100 I'd give MM Food an 83. For chrissakes, he sampled the Electric Company!
Blue - You're not feeling Hoe Cakes or One Beer (or Rapp Food, for that matter, since that's at the beginning also)? Those songs are EVIL!

Correct. At least not yet. My gripe with Hoe Cakes is mainly that "supa" vocal sample. One Beer (production-wise) is horrific - worst beat I've ever heard Doom rap over. Rapp Food (is this track 1?) is alright, but again the production is just "off". So as you can see, it's the production I'm having problems with early on in the album - Doom's delivery is fine.

yeah i like mm..food. the official release isn't much different from the advance that's been floating around online, but that's my fault for sneaking a peek instead of waiting for the finished product. i will agree the skits in the middle are a bit much, but at least they're doom skits, his are at least cool & work with the theme of the album...not some bullshit to mess up the flow of the album. i also felt doom shoulda spit somethin on "guinnesses", it is a doom album. although the track w/paul barman was taken off, it is however included on the bonus cd hiphopsite and turntablelab are giving as a freebie when you purchase mm..food. i'm not a big paul barman fan, but that beat prince paul made with the creedence clearwater revival sample was dope!! i must agree with a previous post, operation doomsday & madvillain are my favorite albums, but mm..food is pretty close.

Black Bastards is a very dope album.
And he's been rhyming over the Special Herbs beats on his albums ever since they started coming out, it's nothing new.
I do recall One Beer being on a 12" and hating it though.
What is it with Doom and chicks though? I think I saw madseen talk about it too, how chicks just hate his shit... serious female hip hop heads dig him, but I'll play random Doom shit at parties occasionally and girls will get mad.

Yeah, but he'd first release a full-length, with most of the songs on said full-length later appearing as instrumentals on a Special Herbs album. That process was reversed for MM Food. Agree it's not really a big deal either way.

I know what you mean. Thing is I have a couple of "mainstream" friends that like MF Grimm when I play it; never mind the fact Doom produced most of that album. I'm planning to catch him in Philly in a few days; I'm sure the estrogen levels will be virtually non-detectable. :(
But enough about that. What's the latest on the Doom-Prince Paul collab?

A lot of the beats on the first two volumes dropped before the vocal versions... shit from the MIC and King Gheedorah albums.
The Doom/Prince Paul album should be dope, but I think I'm anticipating the Doom/Prefuse 73 album even more...

Solid album. Worth picking up if your a fan of his shit, if you never liked him, I don't think now is the time. Unless all you have heard is Viktor Vaughn 2, because that shit really sucked.
But yeah, some "hot shit" off the album, Hoecakez, Potholderz, One Beer, and Kookiez.
So yeah, pick it up if you like MF.
P.S. Some of these beats sound old...like Poo Putt Platter is also on Vast Aire's album...and I got the Nastradoomus Nas Remixes, so a lot of the beats sound recyled but I guess most of yall are hearing them for the first time.

Whenever we start threads about collabs we want that's one that never comes up....but in actuality his production style would mesh beautifully with Doom's flow/lyrics. It would be the album that Venomous Villain should have been.

Exactly... but yeah I heard it's officially in the works. Almost too good to be true. Blacklist is a fucking masterpiece (and will be on my next mix CD ;) ) I had heard that Prefuse did a track for Viktor Vaughn that obviously didn't make the album, so maybe they just decided to start a whole separate project with it.
