bob marley is the most commonly known reggae artist for sure and thats cool that ur branchin out but dont ever forget how dope bob really is. Check Peter Tosh(an original wailer), Isreal Vibration, Jimmy Cliff, Barry Levington, Black Uruhu, Steel Pulse, The Skatilites, Roots Radic. Im not into dancehall all that much but i do know judge dread. not my style but still pretty dope. Just remember that reggae is a wide genre...there are many different types of reggae. my favs are roots(bob, isreal vibration) and dub(bill laswell, lee 'scratch' perry and the upsetters). just try a bucha different stuff, and figure what u like cuz there are millions of reggae artists from the 60s til today...peace

Yeah, Peter Tosh would have to be my favorite over Bob Marley - don't get me wrong, Marley's awesome, but that's all you ever hear.
I also really like Lee Scratch Perry and Augustus Pablo. Charlie Chaplin has some good stuff and some of Eek A Mouse I like. Yellow Man.
I don't know any dancehall, but whenever I hear it I like it. There's a reggae show on one of Seattle's stations every Saturday morning - it's cool to wake up and turn that on. They broadcast over the internet - and even archive their shows I think - it's www.kexp.org. The show is called Positive Vibration and it's on from 9 or 10 til noon PST - check it out if you can, you'll hear a whole lotta good stuff, everything from roots to dancehall.

Reggae is a gigantic genre with many sub genres and styles.

Here are a few artists I really like from each style:

Rocksteady/early reggae: John Holt, Ken Boothe, any Sir Coxsone productions

Dub: King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, King Jammy aka Prince Jammy, Scientist, Jah Shaka, Joe Gibbs, Prince Far-I & The Arabs

Roots: Early Aswad, Johnny Clarke, Jacob Miller, Hugh Mundell, Max Romeo, Lee Scratch Perry, Congos

80s Dancehall: Eek-a-Mouse, Barrington Levy, Junior Reid, Frankie Paul

90s Dancehall: Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Sean Paul, Mr. Vegas, Ninja Man

Neo Roots: Bushman, Luciano, Garnett Silk, Jah Cure, Ras Shiloh

also check out Jackie Mittoo, he's got some groovey shit. that's enough for now.!

here are some good sites for researching reggae:

some may ask why I left out popular artists such as Capleton, Anthony B, Sizzla and so on. They're part of the new concious dancehall movement of mostly bobo dreads. I don't really feel the lyrics but their production is some of the best.

Raggae is a good term nontheless. When a chick's PMSing i think the best deal is to hit the ganj and listen to some reggae.

And yes, I am listing up some of these reggae artists myself.

werd on Jacob Miller and Eek-A-Mouse (shit was mad funny about younger sisters)...some of you cats know your shit ie. dooz and tgone. can't believe nobody mentioned DESMOND DEKKER, TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS, JIMMY CLIFF, DON CARLOS, or GREGORY ISSACS tho.
and i don't know if you'd consider this guy reggae or not but he is from jamaica and kind of has that sound. his name is johnny nash. i'm sure you've heard his song, I Can See Clearly Now. He has a fuckin' beautiful voice. don't even front like you disagree.

sly & robbie
toots and the maytals
the wailers
scientist (tgone put me up on this cat, dope)
sizzla has some cuts.
then i just randomly scooped one by Dr. Alimantado & The Rebels "Skankin' in the Park" and it's off the hook. I think I like dub the best right now. But Roots is where it's at in my opinion.

i don't know shit though. wish i did.

Is the mis-spelling of reggae in the topic bugging anyone else? I don't know why that particular spelling error is annoying me so much, but it is. Any way to edit it?
Oh, and go to www.kexp.org and click on "Stream Archive" then click on "Programs" then click on "Positive Vibrations" and you can listen to the past two shows (3 hours apeice, commercial free).

I actually just tried out the streaming show for the first time and it's sweet! It tells you the Musician, Album, Song, and Label for the song that's currently playing - a good way to find new music!

yo, how the fuck you know diego roots? haha, this is tight. i'm homies with ryan quinn, the keyboardist. but i'm not 21 yet so i've only been able to see their shows at sdsu at that sigma chi annual party deal and at some house parties, and at pb block party. they are fuckin' tight, man. we'll have to meet up sometime. we might even know some of the same people. this is strange though.

regarding TIGHT reggae artists:

IMO, the best shit is from '75 to '83. this is when heavy roots and killer production were backed (overwhelmingly) by the roots radics band. there is too much to explain really. you gotta just start with most anything on greensleeves records, or anything with augustus pablo and the rockers. you will, however, find that a lot of 'songs' repeat from artist to artist, and producer to producer. they have what are called, 'versions,' or remixes if you will using the same backing rhythm but just with different vocal styles and different lyrics. it's all about the dub though. scientist is probably saught after most for his 'psychadelic' production incorporating delays and echoes and chimes and what have you. his early shit is golden. just check allmusic.com for more info.

now as far as my favs (mostly conscious roots and lovers rock):
augustus pablo
lacksley castell
hugh mundell
cultural roots
viceroys
twinkle brothers
barrington levy
johnny osbourne
don carlos
eek a mouse
peter broggs

the only reggae i heard from hawaii that i thought was really nice:
butch helamano
bruddah waltah

you just have to understand that a lot of this shit overlaps. the backing beats are what make reggae so sweet and smooth. the simple two or three chord guitar strumming linked together with a flowing bassline and a killer break will make you want to float around a dancefloor all night, skanking 'til your irie soul's content.

just look for stuff from '75 to '83 from greensleeves, clocktower, message, or shit with the roots radics and king tubby, scientist, linval thompson, prince jammy, or jah thomas at the controls. most anything from studio one is bonkers. but realize that the shit after dancehall hit the scene is wack as fuck, fake rasta. i think you'll know the killer shit when you hear it.

whoever mentioned john brown's body is up on their shit. get their albums called 'this day' and 'among them.' those guys fucking kill it. they are the sort of 'new school' roots keeping the real shit alive. it just sounds more crisp i guess. not as heavy as the original roots production but still tight as fuck. serious. def. try to get a hold of their side project band '10 ft. ganja plant' and their album 'hillside airstrip.' that shit will be very rare, if not already.

if anybody is into bad brains, i HIGHLY suggest picking up their new album. these guys are back with fire. killer dub tracks, and some decent ones with lyrics. they mix up the dancehall a little bit, but overall it is a really nice record.

i'll try to be more direct with websites/info/suggestions if anyone has a specific question about anything...

nice thread. let's def. keep this shit going with recommendations/input. peaces.

I just found this: Dub Side Of The Moon...Pink Floyd's album remade as a dub album by Easy Stars All-Stars (never heard of them)...you can listen to "Breathe" http://www.npr.org/programs/asc/archives/asc32/index.html#easystar
Kinda funny sounding, was hoping it would be more deep dub but it's pretty close to the original.

Glad you like it! I was just searching for something else and came across that. I thought I'd post it here - I think it's kinda cool to have a thread dedicated to reggae/etc for people to use as a reference tool or something.

What're your favorite Augustus Pablo and Scientist albums? I've only got "East of the River Nile", and been meaning to pick up some more Pablo. And I've been looking under the Scientist card for a while now, but have yet to pick anything up - it looks like Greensleeves is reissuing his stuff now, but if I'm gonna spend $18 for a new CD I might as well just buy the original pressing.

The only album I own of his is 'Rockers All-Stars" which he produced but it features someone different on each song. It's one of my favorite Augustus productions. My favorite track on there is 'Fussing and Fighting' by Junior Delgado.

These are my other favorites and key Pablo LPs you should check out:

'Original Rockers' (his most famous LP)
'Rockers Meet King Tubby In a Fire House'

I have about 60 MP3s of my favorite tracks from almost every album. If you have Soulseek, hit me up. My username is tgone.

My favorite Scientist LP is the one he did with Prince Jammy. It's called 'Scientist Vs. Prince Jammy'. Very stripped down drum n bassy dub. 'Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires' is one of my favorites too. I also have a whole bunch of favorite MP3s from various albums that you can check out.
