anybody else not really feeling this? Sometimes freestyles are tight but a well written planned out song is so much better to me. Anybody else think alotta of these MCs that can rip people off the head in freestyle battles can't really do anything else but that. Why does the caliber of MC depend soley on how they battle rap. Battle rapping just isnt that tight to me, i dunno Ive never really liked it. The other annoying thing is that everyone and their moms think they can freestyle everytime they get a little alcohol or weed in them, that shit is just so weak. There are battle rappers that have gone beyond battling who I like but their actual songs are way better than their freestyles. And I hate when rappers put freestyles on their albums??

and the best shit is when rappers dis freestyling like E-40,J-Zone, and Too $hort.
"I don't freestlye, I dont rap for free mayn" E-40

i have to agree with ya on this one. its gotten to the point where in some situations, its all about clownin than actually using skills when they rap. they might as well just stick to playin the dozens than calling it a freestyle battle.

i agree too, freestyling and battles are still ok, but waaay overrated. i would rather hear some well thought out lyrics than a diss about some dudes fit, or his 'weak ass style'. in battles it seems like every time they either upping themselves or dissing the other

the last battle i witnessed, it seemed like every emcee was saying "C'mon, dog.." almost every or every other line.. like "C'mon, dog.. you need to find a new style.. C'mon dog, this ain't 8 Mile.." or "C'mon, dog.. your punchlines are whack... C'mon dogg.. come wash my back"

the lyrical possibilities are endless.. it just blows my mind.

I'm not battle rappers that bother so much as the... whats the word? Wack rappers.

Versatility is key. It all plays a vital role in the essence of Hip Hop.

If you're gonna bitch about something, bitch about the locust-like swarm of subpar bullshit rappers on the scene these days.

excellent use of imagery.. prewritten or off the top?

nah.. i feel you.. which is why i'm doing my part to promote the elevation of artforms by keeping my extremely limited talents to myself.

That shit was straight off the dome, son.

Thats kind of why i refuse to really promote myself until i feel that i'm making something a broad group of people will actually feel. I'll post a beat or a song here once in a while, and i've done a few shows. But i refuse to shove it down peoples throat until i feel it's perfected. That may be in a year, or it may be never. But until then, Hip Hop doesn't need any more mediocre contributions. It took me a while to realize this.

Good post man, I gotta respect that.

And about the free styles, I love them as long as the freestylers have flow and talent, some of this stuff I hear gets really stale though.

this guy is pointing out the differences to good and bad
freestyle/battle emcee's without knowing it.

personally i got better shit to talk about (teach the babies) than
shit talking on emcees i know are whack.

What do you think a battle is? Any "battle" in anything is where you want to win. You want to defeat your opponent in any way possible.

***The other annoying thing is that everyone and their moms think they can freestyle everytime they get a little alcohol or weed in them.

Most definitely...when I see people do this I have actually told them to their face not to 'cause they're ruining an artform. All the people who do this should be socked in the face.

I personally think that mc's should be able to freestyle atleast a little bit. For me I worked hard to get good with freestyles but that is just something that is really fun for me. Battles are cool if you are into that. I just don't really get off on it.

nah man I didnt get served, Ive never spit a freestyle in my life. Im no MC, I do a little writing but dont really have the verbal skills to spit the verses man. To be a good MC you gotta be able to talk, be a verbally talented person that can really put your voice into it.

And thats funny you said that, cuz alotta the time I do want to sock dudes in the face. Sittin there saying "Fuckin" every 5 seconds.

And Im not bitching about freestyling and battle rapping, I just dont like it. Dont get me wrong, I have heard some good freestyles in my day that I was like whoa did he really come off the head with that line, that was sick!

The last good battler slash freestyler I saw was on Mtv's emcee battle v.2 or whatever it was called. That dude Swan was hilarious, but they ended up giving the title to that other dude from Miami. I think Swan should have won. Freeway and Dame Dash got a big thumbs down from me on that one.

A good emcee can freestyle, battle and write a great song....it's versatility...most cats who try and rap these days don't have it...most try and perfect one aspect, but I respect emcees who can do it all...I consider myself a good freestyle emcee, have won and lost a few battles and write complete songs....that's the ONLY way to be in my opinion.....gotta be ready to handle anything tossed your way...

my thoughts exactly.

but either way, there's a time and place for both a thought out rap and clownin' ass frees, I can't pick a favorite, I love it all. Same reason you'll find lil wyte or Juve in my tape deck right along side buck 65 or sage francis (and all in between).

As an all around mc meaning straight freestyle, battling and can write a dope song, JUICE is slept on like a motherfucker. This dude is so ill it just seems he doesnt get as much hype as a lot of other artists.
