I just watched (dont ask why) the new Dru Hill video. They must have paid them to do this, but it is still quite disturbing. All through the video, there is GKAE and SABER tags, toss ups etc..NEW SHIT??!!??
I mean Dru Hill aka Thong guy + MSK GKAE SABER = I NOW HATE GRAFF!!!!!!
(well not really, just real mad)
Give me feed back on how graff has become "mainstream"
Good or bad?
I retired this year, but not because of the "mainstream" factor. I just have a fam, so i can't be jeapordizing that. My crew stills reps hard though, and all my boys still paint, and i still piece and do productions in my garage, but as for bombing i retired.
So you think it went mainstream because you saw painting in one video? What about all the work Mear puts in? And Giant? Those fools are capitolizing on their skills, and why not? If i ever got the recognition like they did, i'd do the same, in fact, i intend on taking my graffitti to the next level and going to school for graphic design. I don't understand why shit has to be "underground" to be cool.... thats retarded. I've been painting for almost 11 years now, and up is the only way for the artform to go.
Don't get me wrong though, i thinks it's weakcity when these newjacks borrow money from their mom to go buy cans at Home Depot. I definitley think Graff has lost a slight edge, what with paint racking becoming obsolete. But to quit the art because you saw it in a wack video is lame. Keep writin fool.
No more haterade.

you will love to hear that there is a graffiti movie in the works
in the mainstream...it will be along the lines of save the last
dance and drumline (meaning it will be cheesy)
i heard because they were looking to put together the soundtrack
Hmm... i wonder if it'll even be worth seeing. Post some more details when you find out or whatever.
Pzs.
What's up Siant! Yeah, I definately agree with what you have to say. Some of these graff artisits are our generation's Warhol and Liechtenstein (sp?). I can see in 40 years people having prints of Kaws and Doze Green in their living rooms, talking and debating their artistic merits. I've always loved graff and really wish that I could write - I've just got no can control. What I just started doing is sculpting graff pieces. Just finished sculpting my first piece. My plan is to sculpt tons of different pieces, create molds from them and cast them in plaster and resin, then paint the casts. Graff is a damn old form of expression, it just hasn't been explored until recently and now that it's begining to be it can launch off in so many directions.
Thats a SICK medium if i do say so myself. A few of the artists i keep under my scope... a couple german cats (Loomit, Daim and Hesh) sculpt pieces as well, then bust them on walls, thats where you get that 3d Euro flavor that has become so popular... thats sick though. YOu should send me some flicks when you get a complete work done. I'd honestly LOVE to peep that.
I'd love to show you some pics - problem is I don't have a digicam and hopefully won't have a computer soon. Maybe I can get a friend to snap them for me. Like I say, I just finished sculpting the first, now I'm sanding it and getting it ready for the mold. This first piece is probably abou 6"x4" - a small one just to see how this process will work out. Ideally I want to make maybe a series of 6 - 10 of this size, make plaster casts to paint with acrylics all wild like, and then make some resin casts to paint with a single color of spray and then see if I can get them up in a gallery. After this small series I want to try some larger pieces as well as some articulated figures (I don't know how I'll make something with articulation, but it'll be fun trying shit out.)
Hey S...
I've seen Daim's canvasses (some of that shit is sweet! I love the yellow jackets!), but how about pointing me in the direction of some sculpture?

I find it funny that mainstream representations of graffiti, be it news media or popular culture (like MTV), are useally very skewed and backwards. Ever read an article in the paper about something you know a lot about? They always say some dumb shit. That's why I don't look to mainstream media as an outlet for truth. It's nice when those representations come correct. In this case, they needed graff for a video and they got some heads that know what's up and deserve the exposure and the paycheck.
As far as graff becoming mainstream, I think that's a contradiction of terms.Graff is rebellious, a public enemy, and illegal. If it isn't illegal, it's not graff. It's still dope, don't get me wrong. To my man above with the family, that's real. No reason to stop doing burners, you're not trying to go to jail. I feel you bro. I find myself in a similar situatuion. I've paid my dues, gotten good, and it's just not worth the risk anymore. I have too much on the line. It's dope to hear you're still painting! Never stop, I know I won't, I'll rep my crew in my heart forever and at chill spots when possible.
As far as design goes, I think aspects of graff can help you do design: form, color, negative space, presentation, etc. I also think design is about expressing others ideas, and not your own. Your designs say what your clients want them to. Graffiti is Art, in that it's self expression, very differant from design. What do yall think? Just some thoughts. Mad repsect to all writers, past and present, all styles, all motivations, we have to respect eachother. I'll shut up now. peace.
By the way for someone who "writes" I suck at spelling so forgive some typos....

Sien Five is fresh. I do have some flicks but I have seemed to misplace a bunch of my negatives so I don't know if i can get you prints. I might have doubles of a few, and I don't know of the flciks I have, how rare they are. I do have some other flicks to trade, mine included and love train flicks. There is probably a way to duplicate photos other than color copies, but even copies can be decent. It all depends on how bad you want the flick I guess. Let me know and we could arrange something. peace.
